A Good Place to Start

Good comprehensive introduction, for young children, to the Ancient Sumerian society. The book contains Interesting facts and illustrations. I was able to read it in one sitting with my five year old. It also has a cute non-fiction story, a timeline, glossary and resource page at the end of the book . Highly recommend for people who want to supplement their children's knowledge of the ancient society of Sumer.

Wei Dong Chen, a highly acclaimed and beloved artist, and an influential leader in the New Chinese Cartoon trend, is the founder of Creator World in Tianjin, the largest comics studio in China. The first Monkey King story

A rock at the top of Spring Mountain, having absorbed all the energy of heaven and earth, gives birth to a stone monkey. Spring Mountain is sort of a monkey paradise. The other monkeys think the stone monkey is pretty cool. They give him food and adopt him as one of their own. Pursuing an ancient legend, the stone monkey discovers a hidden treasure-filled shelter where all the monkeys can live. He becomes king of the monkeys and rules benignly, presiding over monkey parties for the next two hundred years. When an old monkey dies, the stone monkey begins a search for the secret of eternal life. He becomes a disciple of Master Puti, who christens him Sun Wu Kong. Kong learns a good bit of wizardry while remaining an impetuous monkey. When he returns home after years of training, he finds that Spring Mountain has been seized by the Evil King. What will Sun Wu Kong do?

The Monkey King series retells an ancient Chinese legend so of course it teaches lessons, the greatest of which is: Don't be a bad monkey! In other words, don't be prideful and boastful, and don't use your magic powers to cheese off the rulers of the other realms. Whether the stone monkey will ever learn these lessons is doubtful, nor is it clear that he needs to, given his unique status as a being created from energy. Talk about a force of nature! Volume 1 ends with a cliffhanger, so readers will need to wait for volume 2 to discover whether the stone monkey can be defeated, or at least humbled.

The writing style is crisp. Humor pervades the story (as you might expect in a story about monkeys). The art is perfect for the story. Sometimes the art looks like it early computer graphics, in a time when too few pixels produced fuzzy images. Other times it is sharp and clear. The stone monkey's facial expressions are priceless. This would be worth having for the art alone. Combined with the fanciful story, Monkey King is a series graphic story fans -- particularly those with an interest in international differences in graphic storytelling -- will want to check out.

To encourage my son (second grader) to read more, I started buying him graphic novels. I saw this at the library and checked it out for my son to see if he would like it. He loved it so I bought the entire 20 volume set. It is an adaptation of Journey to the West so it does help to have some familiarity with the story. It would be like reading a graphic novel based on the Illiad. My son had watched an Monkey King cartoon in his afterschool program so he was familiar with the names of the main characters before reading the books. I read an English translation of Journey to the West when I was in college, but my son is probably more familiar with all the sub-plots and minor characters than I am.

Introducing the Monkey King

The Monkey King, whose adventures are told in the epic legend The Journey to the West, is one of the defining characters of Eastern literature. He is impetuous and quick-tempered. He is all-powerful yet prone to simple mistakes. He is a very complicated yet entertaining character, and when he embarks on an adventure with three very different and strange friends, readers will be reminded of such stories as the Wizard of Oz and the legends of King Aurther.

Journey to the West is an epic tale of gods and monsters, monkeys and monks, with a scale the surpasses almost any story in the Western canon. This wonderful series of graphic novels is the most comprehensive adaption of the story I've read in English. The art conveys the vastness of the story, while the text is accessible to readers of all ages. There are even characters biographies and a themes section at the back to help Western readers understand the story. If you want to introduce your kids to the most famous Eastern legend of all time, you could do no better than these graphic novels.

Another Poppy story with a cute ending.

This is an excellent reader for a child who likes animals and is improving with his or her reading skills. Short chapters, dialogue and slightly longer sentences along with very good illustrations make this book a little more demanding than beginning material. The story about the budding friendship between a dog and kitten will keep the child interested in the book.

The child who can handle this story will feel like a "big kid" reader and be proud of his/her reading skills. That's certainly a good thing!

Not the Little Red Riding Hood I remembered.

I was not too sure about this tale. There was definitely some dark undertones to the choices when you picked the path where children were being kidnapped in WWI. There was a lot of rescues by shotgun and the familiar tale was in there too. This book could be read over and over with different choices being made each time. I think this book is definitely for middle grades or older.

Also, you might meet some familiar faces if you become a modern day kid, like your awesome and brave granny or some wicked wolves. The 25 different conclusions seem endless and keep you on edge, as you turn the page to see if you are the victor or wolf-lunch. It’s an adventure in your hands and you’re the star. Read Little Red Riding Hood and decide your destiny!

Little Red Riding Hood was extremely entertaining and creative. It added a fresh new look to the famous story of a girl and her red hood. The stories were delightful, and I was excited to read them. I also enjoyed how I was able to make the character’s decisions. However, I must say parts of this book were a little violent and macabre. Due to this, I am suggesting this book for older ages such as 10 and up. This book is one of the best that I have read and sent me on a thrilling journey that is why I am giving it 5 stars. This book made me love the story of Little Red Riding hood again, and it will make you fall in love with it too.

Dark and Violent

The cover artwork makes this look like a fun new reading of Little Red Riding Hood. Having read the original Choose Your Own Adventure series, I was expecting few happy endings and many ways of meeting your "end". What I was not expecting was the darkness of all the stories and the descriptive violence of each ending. This book is too dark and graphic for elementary age children and too juvenile for middle schoolers. There are graphic descriptions of being eaten by a wolf, killing and being killed by wolves with guns and knives and children being herded onto train cars by a totalitarian government reminiscent of the Halocaust. This is not the fun read that the cover leads you to expect.

My grown daughter has loved Chihuly studio art glass since she was a child. We saw his work years ago at the MARVELOUS Indianapolis (Indiana) Children's Museum and more recently at his Museum in Seattle. I am looking forward to giving this beautiful calendar to her this Christmas!

We missed Chilhuly's exhibition when he had it at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and this is as close to his work as you can get. Faithful reproduction of his style and colors. Will make a great addition to any wall for the next year.

Spooky but not-to-scary read

Scream Street Flame of the Dragon is ghoulishly great!
Whether it’s stealing a dragon egg or hiding from G.H.O.U.L., Scream Street Flame of the Dragon is a fiendishly fun read that will keep you on the edge of your seat! The antics begin with an introduction to Cleo the mummy, Resus the vampire, and Luke the werewolf. They are banished to The Underlands by the evil Acrid Belcher where without a good plan, and some help from an old friend, they will be trapped there forever! One of their many adventures include traveling over the bridge of truth. Will they make it over the Chasm of Doom? You’ll have to read to find out! They must obtain a dragon eggshell, preferably without waking the dragon, and save the normals who have been kidnapped by the ghastly Sir Otto Sneer. There is a character sheet at the beginning of the book in case you forget who’s who and in each chapter there is an illustration of the gangs current surroundings to help you visualize the setting. It’s not necessary to read the twelve previous books in the series because almost all the characters are introduced before chapter five. However, based on this chilling adventure, I will definitely read the previous books and would recommend that you do so as well. Overall I’d recommend Scream Street Flame of the Dragon to anyone looking for a spooky but not-to-scary read. This book deserves 5 stars of monstrous proportions

Fantastic series!!!

My son has historically had problems with wanting to read. He is a reluctant reader, and is lower than his peers with grade level expectations for reading. He absolutely loved this series, we own all of the books. He has begun to enjoy reading more. He, and I, highly recommend this series.

Grade 1-3-This title offers separate, full-page watercolor paintings of 18 different kinds of insects in their natural habitats. Insects depicted include: silverfish, giant walkingstick, black horse fly, elephant stag beetle, gladiator katydid, honey bee, and luna moth. A single line of large, bold-print text appears on the page opposite each illustration; on the bottom right-hand corner, a caption provides the common name of the species depicted. Each simple sentence or fragment describes either a general characteristic shared by all insects, or a special characteristic of a particular group. Additional bits of general information about insects as well as miscellaneous facts about the featured species are appended. As in About Birds (1991), About Mammals (1997), and About Reptiles (1999, all Peachtree), the realistic watercolor paintings are this book's main focus. They are bright, attractive, and nicely varied in composition. However, despite their visual appeal, the artwork sometimes fails to illustrate the text effectively. For example, the painting of mantis nymphs emerging from an egg case does not match the text, which reads, "Young insects hatch from eggs." As no eggs are visible, this statement is apt to be confusing. Sandra Markle's Creepy, Crawly Baby Bugs (Walker, 1996) provides more detailed information on insect anatomy, reproduction, and behavior and is illustrated with excellent, close-up color photographs.

My son and I both love these books. They have basic facts that are scientifically accurate, interesting, but not too much information for a pre-schooler. The drawings are great and make this one you will come back to again and again.

Perfect introduction for young children

I love this whole series (or at least the 5 we have so far). The pictures have great detail, but the text is SO short and simple (as in one phrase or sentence per page), yet full of facts. They easily held the attention of my son at 3, and then as he got older he started really noticing the details. We pulled this one out again when we were reading The Grouchy Ladybug. It was a great seeing the stag beetle, the praying mantis, and over course, the ladybug beetle in both a fiction and non-fiction setting. I thought it was interesting that the description above critized the page where it talks about insects coming from eggs yet the picture not reflecting that. If they read the information about each picture at the back they would have known what was being depicted. It would have been hard to descibe in one simple sentence within the text, but I appreciate that the information is in the back. I read that on my own so I can answer my children's questions through our conversation.

I purchased this calendar for my wife and she loves it. However, we just noticed that August 2016 has the 1st beginning on Sunday instead of Monday, therefore, all of the dates are off by one day. We will probably be placing stickers with the correct dates over them.

Measuring seals in feet instead of cm and meters seems like such a disservice to our children

It was a good read with frequent repetition of target vocabulary. My son can now read "birth" and "mother" with no problems. There was a lot of good new vocabulary too like "retractable claws".

Elizabeth Raum has written over two-dozen nonfiction books for young readers, including a biography of Louis Armstrong for Capstone Press.
