Gr 5–8—Levinson brings together the story of nine young people of different backgrounds, religions, races, and socioeconomic status who all share a common love—the circus. Circus Harmony in St. Louis, MO—a city known for its racial turbulence—is made up of both black and white and inner-city and suburban youth. Readers meet Kellin Quinn Hentoff-Killian, who has been around the circus since he was an infant and who mastered the art of juggling as a toddler while watching his older siblings. Kellin's mother, Jessica Hentoff, is the artistic and executive director of Circus Harmony, a nonprofit that teaches kids circus skills with the goal of encouraging them to learn cooperation, develop perseverance, and meet and befriend those from different backgrounds. The book also focuses on the Galilee Circus in Israel, directed by Marc Rosenstein and one of the few places in the country where Arab and Jewish youth could come together. Hentoff and Rosenstein decided that these two cultural ambassador circuses should meet. With sidebars and easy-to-read short vignettes, this book nevertheless packs in a lot of information. The accompanying photos break up the dense text, but readers may prefer to approach the book in small doses. More inspiring than investigative, this title may find more of an audience among adults looking for ways to motivate youth. VERDICT Suitable for larger libraries with multicultural or inspirational collections.—Carol Connor, Cincinnati Public Schools, OH

I learned a lot from this book and I’m glad I took the time to read it.

In WATCH OUT FOR FLYING KIDS!, author Cynthia Levinson takes the reader behind the scenes of the world of children’s circus. The youth social circus is an arts education movement that aims to bring different groups of young performers together. Levinson focuses on two very unique circus groups: the St. Louis Arches from Missouri and the Galilee Circus from Israel. Both circuses are comprised of children under the age of 18 and are made up of kids from different backgrounds and cultures. When the two circuses were combined into one, they had an experience like no other.
The St. Louis Arches is made up of a group of kids who attend Circus Harmony, the youth social circus in St. Louis. Only a small percentage of those who go to Circus Harmony are good enough to make it into the coveted Arches group. The Arches are a professional group that perform several times a week in many places throughout the country.
The Galilee Circus is a more loosely comprised group of youngsters who want to learn about the circus. Before they met up with the Arches, they had little experience actually performing as a group.
The narrative of WATCH OUT FOR FLYING KIDS! takes place over a period of five years. During that time, the groups were able to get together three times, thanks to the hard work and dedication of the leaders of both groups, Jessica Hentoff for the St. Louis Arches and Marc Rosenstein for the Galilee Circus. The collaboration posed many problems for the leaders of each group. They had to work through cultural differences, language barriers, differences in work ethics, legal issues dealing with passports and visas, monetary issues, religious differences and racial prejudices. But, by working together, they overcame these hurdles and created a unique experience for all involved.
I enjoyed reading WATCH OUT FOR FLYING KIDS! --- I actually never knew that there were circuses made up of child performers --- but I had some issues with it. There were a few typos, and the author included some technical terms that I wasn’t familiar with, including the diablo and rolla bolla. If it weren’t for the pictures, I don’t think I would have figured out either one. I wish the author had included a glossary of terms at the end of the book. Lastly, I thought that the author occasionally switched topics rather abruptly; it was a bit difficult keeping up with the topic at hand.
All in all, though, WATCH OUT FOR FLYING KIDS! was a good book; it’s evident that Levinson did her homework. I learned a lot from this book and I’m glad I took the time to read it.

Watch Out for Flying Kids!
By KarenRachel
Cynthia Levinson is quickly becoming my favorite children's nonfiction writer. Her first nonfiction children's book, We've Got A Job, is the book I buy for birthday and holiday presents and the one I go to for inspiration and hope when I am feeling hopeless about racial injustice. Here again, Ms. Levinson writes about children who are making change, while changing themselves. In vivid detail with compelling stories and lively photographs she shows how children across different racial, ethnic, and class backgrounds work together to perform social circuses. In Israel, Jewish and Arab children work and perform together and so do inner city and suburban kids in St Louis. During the summers they travel to each others country and they fuel each other's desire to become even better than they are. The book has an anthropological feel to it. Children are interviewed in detailed and followed across five years on two continents. We see them grown, make choices and become strong. We see when they struggle and when they triumph and we also learn how they manage to collaborate in the face of great differences between them, even in times of war (Gaza) or social unrest. Ultimately this is a book about social justice and what it takes to persevere in the face of persecution and enormous obstacles and how to count on each other and yourself. Thank you Netgalley for allowing me to review this book for an honest opinion.

Following nine circus performers in two different circuses, this fascinating work of nonfiction describes a unique arts education movement that brings together teens with varied backgrounds. The story is told chronologically over a ten year period ending in 2014.
The many photographs and other illustrations will draw student interest. Sidebars provide background information and insights into the book’s many interesting youth. Engaging section headings within the chapters reflect the thoughts of youth. The book includes a pronunciation guide, prologue, afterword, author’s note, and index in addition to the body of text.
Librarians will find the youth circus theme provides an fascinating context for exploration of social issues. Consider using this book as a focus point for a discussion of diversity. Combine this book along with others focusing on social issues as part of a nonfiction literature circle. Use maps along with other nonfiction books to help students understand issues related to racism and tribalism.
