About the Author
Christine Zuchora-Walske grew up and eventually settled down in Minneapolis. But as a young adult, she spent some time gallivanting elsewhere, including the University of Notre Dame, London, the University of Denver, and a small town in the cornfields of Illinois.
Along the way she discovered a love for reading, writing, and inquiry and a desire to make a career of those activities. For almost twenty years now, Christine has been writing and editing books and magazine articles for children and their parents. She began as an editor with the Cricket family of children's magazines. She ventured to the Lerner Group next, and then Meadowbrook Press. After having two children, she became a freelance editor and writer.
Christine's author credits are many and varied. They include crafts and puzzles; a monthly column in which she impersonated a praying mantis; natural science titles for beginning readers; books exploring countries around the world; a debate on the pros and cons of Internet censorship; and books on pregnancy and parenting. Christine has also edited hundreds of articles and books in many genres and for all ages.
Christine is especially fond of science and history. But she loves all kinds of knowledge and literature. She never tires of learning new things, and she gets a kick out of trading knowledge with others.

More than likely you use a computer every day, even if you don’t own something like a PC or a laptop. For example, “Toys, cameras, and many other everyday objects have computers in them.” Even though you’d think a big tower might be very different from that in your laptop is probably has “the same kind of parts. All computers have tasks they perform including “input, memory, processing, and output.” Sounds rather like a brain, doesn’t it? In a way it is.
If you pretend you are a computer and someone sends you a message, written or spoken, that’s input. Just thinking about what you’ve taken in you are “processing” that information. When you decide to “respond, you are giving output.” It’s actually quite a simple concept to understand when you think about it in that manner. Computers receive all kinds of input every day. You can define input as “any information that goes into the computer.” For example, whenever you type an email, your computer is receiving input.
A computer remembers all the input it receives, using its memory. A computer doesn’t have just one kind of memory, but rather two: storage and random-access memory (RAM). In a nutshell, storage “holds information even when the computer is off” and RAM “holds information while you’re using the computer.” It’s bye-bye to that information once you turn off the computer! In this book you’ll also learn about the ins and outs of processing, the operating system (OS), output, and many other fascinating facts about what’s inside your computer and what makes it work!
This is a fascinating, fun book about the inside world of computers young students will enjoy. The book is not about naming all the individual components of a computer, but rather it discusses in “insides” or functions it performs. The layout pops with eye-catching photographs and small sidebar-like captions that add more information to the text. For example, we learn that “Flash drives are also used for storage” and that “They are smaller than hard drives.” In the back of the book is an index, a glossary, “Takeaway Tips,” some “Fun Facts,” and additional recommended book and website resources to explore. There are additional free complementary educational resources on the publisher’s website.
