From School Library Journal
Gr 3-6–Tyler Yu and Charlie Hitchcock are back for more adventures at the Abracadabra Hotel. This time, the “Great and Powerful” Theopolis is causing trouble. First, he creates a huge hullabaloo by causing a child to go missing, and then he challenges the master magician and hotel proprietor, Abracadabra himself. The chance for Abracadabra to perform one last time and the very ownership of the hotel are at stake. Can Ty and Charlie help their friend and favorite magician defeat his nemesis or will all be lost? This is a strong follow-up to Hocus Pocus Hotel (Capstone, 2012), complete with the same style of bright cartoon illustrations that showcase the magical illusions. Fans of magic and reluctant readers will like the content and will appreciate the story's fast pacing. The characters are not particularly well developed, but they are still likable. A good purchase where the first book has circulated.–Elizabeth Swistock, Orange County Public Library, VAα(c) Copyright 2013. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. From Booklist
When arrogant illusionist the Great and Powerful Theopolis performs a complex trick and then challenges retired magician Abracadabra to explain it or forfeit the Hocus Pocus Hotel, it’s up to unlikely allies Ty and Charlie—one a nerd, the other a feared bully—to save the day. Although Dahl doesn’t provide enough specific information for readers to perform their own feats of prestidigitation, his tale does involve glimpses of magicians’ techniques and some deduction. Weber’s diagrams and brightly colored cartoon-style illustrations add detail and atmosphere to this predictable but moderately suspenseful episode, second in the Hocus Pocus Hotel series. Grades 4-6. --John Peters

A Fine Sequel
By Pop Bop
I am a big fan of the first book in this series, Hocus Pocus Hotel. This book is essentially Volume 2 and follows up on the heels of the original, with all of the same characters. You can start with this book. But, Volume 1 takes some care in laying out the history of Abracadabra and of the Hocus Pocus Hotel, as well as the relationship between Tyler, (originally a bully), and Charlie, (brain and, originally, victim of the bully). The reader's familiarity with all of that is more or less assumed in this book, and while you will pick up enough background to follow this book, it might be a more rewarding and coherent read after Volume 1.

That said, this volume has its own appeal. Tyler and Charlie work well as a team. There are really two mysteries, with overlapping characters, so the plot is very manageable for even a young reader. Dahl adds descriptions and even diagrams of some of the stage magic tricks that are performed during the course of the story, which I imagine would be of interest to any reader who is a magic fan.

The book is well written and well edited. It reads clearly and smoothly, and builds suspense and mystery right up to the conclusion.

So, if you think your reader would like a magic themed adventure/mystery, these books might be worth a look.

Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to the author or the publisher of this book.

Great Mystery Read for Elementary Level Readers
By Trixie L
Story time isn't quite the same when your little ones get bigger, but Hocus Pocus Hotel: The Return of Abracadabra by Michael Dahl is the perfect book for reading with your elementary schooler. The second in the Hocus Pocus Hotel series, this book follows Charlie and Ty, two residents of the Abracadabra Hotel, as they prepare for an exciting magic show 50 years after the namesake master magician disappeared. The Great and Powerful Theopolis has come to establish himself as a magician at the hotel, but Charlie and Ty are eager to find the truth behind his tricks. After solving that mystery, they must rush to prepare for Abracadabra's amazing return - the first time he has performed in 50 years! Adventure surrounds Charlie and Ty, two middle-school opposites, as they must get ready for one of the biggest nights of their life. This book, which is packed with full-color pictures and has short chapters that help build confidence in young readers, is a great read and is perfect as a read-along with your "big kid".

Great Sequel that Surpasses the Original
By Paul K. Boran
I read the original book in the series and found it bland, but I loved the premise - particularly the setting. The Return of Abracadabra was a fantastic sequel that took full advantage of the wonderful setting that was created in the first book. The series is essentially I rehashing of Sherlock Holmes, with Charlie playing Sherlock, and Tyler playing Watson. They solve mysteries (usually magic tricks) that take place at the mysterious hocus pocus hotel, primarily because Tyler's mother runs the business. Like the first book in the series, the sequel follows the protagonists as they attempt to solve two major mysteries at the hotel, one of which has major consequences should they fail to solve it in time.

Once again, I found the characters flat and uninteresting. Still, the hotel's atmosphere and description is absolutely worth the price of admission here. Sure, the characters make do and the book is interesting, particularly for kids that want to "solve" mysteries, but they'll really be intrigued by the setting itself. The hotel is wonderfully realized, wonderfully laid out, and everything that takes place in this setting is always worth reading about. For this reason, I recommend you read the series, particularly if you're a mystery lover, for the setting alone. The characters aren't obnoxious or bad, but they're poorly developed and realized - and that's the point, really. These characters were designed to solve mysteries, and they do just that in a wonderfully realized setting.
