From School Library Journal
Gr 4–6—A brilliantly colorized microphotograph of a jumping spider crouches on the dust jacket like some alien nightmare, an electric lure to attract browsers to the many enlightening pages that follow. Many other Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) photos, also colorized, are strewn about, offering vivid details of spinnerets, fangs, and eye patterns; regular color photos of spiders are included as well. The writing flows well, and Siy discusses a wide selection of arachnid topics—basic physiology, behaviors, and silk, for instance—before branching into specific varieties. Some of the species examined are the diving bell spider, the daddy longlegs spider (not to be confused with the equally long-legged harvestman), the wolf spider, and, of course, the black widow. Asides on topics such as courtship, parenting, and web-building are interspersed throughout, and the book ends with Siy delving into how she and Kunkel identified an unknown spider sample. She also explains how the dramatic SEM photos so liberally lavished throughout were taken and colorized. Back matter, which features information on eye-patterns, an identification key to eight common orders, and a segment on spider classification, is sure to delight educators. Similar in scope to Seymour Simon's handsome (nonindexed) Spiders (HarperCollins, 2004, 2007) and Nic Bishop's dramatic Spiders (Scholastic, 2007), this eye-catcher will appeal to students. VERDICT Arresting photos and illuminating text weave a neat web to capture readers.—Patricia Manning, formerly at Eastchester Public Library, NY

A cure for arachnophobia!
By Janet Hamilton
Summary: The cover of this book will undoubtedly freak out some potential readers to the point that they won’t be able to get beyond it. And that’s kind of the point of this book…to debunk the myths that spiders are scary and dangerous. Sure they have fangs and venom, but most of them are pretty harmless to humans and they do some darn interesting things, the most famous of which is spinning amazing webs from a material that is strong, tough, flexible, lightweight, hypoallergenic, and totally biodegradable. Ten unusual spiders are profiled, all with amazing photomicrographs of various parts of the spiders that have been brilliantly colored to make them stand out. Back matter includes information on how to identify spiders, additional resources, and a pretty extensive glossary and index. Grades 3-6.

Pros: There’s a lot of great information that might make an arachnophobia sufferer see spiders in a much more positive light. The pictures are super cool; spider fans will enjoy seeing the amazing details of various arachnid body parts.

Cons: I would have liked to learn more about the photography process used. I was unfamiliar with the word “photomicrograph” and finally found a brief paragraph about this process under the copyright information. It didn’t completely satisfy my curiosity, though, and made no mention of the brilliant colors used.

cool and packed full of facts!
By Mrs Mommy Booknerd (Mrs Mommy Booknerd's Book Reviews) #MMBBR
I introduced this book to the children in my Art Through Stories they class and they thought it was so cool. We all huddled around looking at the pictures while I read the spider facts! They is a lot more than meet the eye when it comes to these creepy crawling eight legged buggers! The kids loved that they were able to see real pictures of these fascinating creatures! I used this book in conjunction with my spider art lesson, so it was a great hit! 5 stars
