Joiner uses the devastating 1883 eruption of the volcano Krakatau as the basis of her first book. When readers meet 13-year-old Katrien Courtlandt, she is writing an admiring letter to Charles Darwin from her home in Java, where she has just finished reading On the Origin of Species. In her spare time, she collects beetles to contribute to his research, but her father and aunt believing she has become too unladylike and unsociable limit her time in the jungle, try to teach her how to run a household, and encourage her to spend time with a polite and kind girl named Brigitta, rather than her native friend Slamet. When Krakatau erupts, ash fall and tsunamis wipe out the majority of the population of Katrien s town, claiming the lives of many close to her; Katrien and Brigitta form a reluctant partnership, which transforms into a friendship. Joiner s story is slow to start, but once the eruption and its aftermath are underway, it shifts into a breakneck, and often heartbreaking, coming-of-age survival story. Ages 10 up. Katrien struggles to fit into the mold of a 13-year-old Dutch girl and would much rather be exploring the jungle with her best friend, indigenous boy Slamet, than learning how to sew from Tante Greet, who is trying to groom her into the perfect Dutch lady. Her carefree days end when Mount Krakatau erupts, spewing ash across the sky and snatching everything dear to her her father, her aunt, her friend, and her home. As fate would have it, Katrien is thrown together with her nemesis, Brigitta, and the rivals must overcome their differences to survive not just the loss of their families, but also deadly tsunamis and extreme thirst and hunger. Despite contrived speech patterns (why do indigenous people speak Dutch translated into broken English and "in a thick accent" generations after the Dutch arrived?) and inaccuracies (a "kampong" is a village not a thatched cottage, and the so-called Javanese language used is actually Bahasa Indonesia), the story is saved by an intriguing, if at times incredible, storyline. Despite cultural slips, this heart-rending story of love and loss, family ties, and friendship will keep readers hooked till the end. (Historical fiction. 10-15)

Adventure, Danger, Friendship

I love books that combine adventure, danger, and themes of friendship and this book hits all three. Katrien, the protagonist, has all the traits that make me want to follow a character through her journey. She is smart, strong, and not perfect. Her refusal to see anything good or worthwhile about the other girls her age could have been off-putting. But because I saw these girls from Katrien's point of view, I empathized with her right from the start. The vivid setting brought life to Katrien's love of science and her love of Java, which made the disaster so realistic. If you enjoyed Jacqueline Kelly’s THE EVOLUTION OF CALPURNIA TATE, you will love AFTER THE ASHES!

Poignant, Gripping and Well Written

I just finished "After the Ashes", and found it to be for the most part really well-written and a fascinating and mostly gripping read. Katrien and her nemesis Brigitta are real, intriguing and well-drawn characters, the more so because they are human. Each is somewhat self-centered, and incapable of seeing the world except from her own viewpoint. Katrien is portrayed as obsessed with her insect collecting hobby and with the writings of Charles Darwin (the latter is the reason I left off one star--the author overdid it a bit by having Katrien constantly spout direct quotes from his books--I have no problem with Charles Darwin, but his writing could seem a little dull and hard to understand to a modern child, and there were too many in my opinion). Still, she's likeable in her love for her father, her friendship with their servant boy Slamet, her somewhat grudging fondness for her aunt, and her lack of interest in growing up and "behaving like a lady". Later, in a desperate time of crisis, we see her show courage and strength of character as well. Brigitta too is snobbish and sarcastic in the beginning, but later we see that she has a great deal of courage, as well as common sense. In the end, after the volcano Krakatau explodes in one of history's most violent and devastating eruptions (Warning: the book takes a little while to pick up speed, but once it gets to this point you won't be able to put it down!), Katrien and Brigitta not only find out they need each other, but learn that they don't have to have everything in common to be friends. Katrien and Slamet, on the other hand, find out in that even when two people are friends, growing up can also cause you to grow apart. The volcano's aftermath is stunning and painful and will haunt you a little (it's also realistic and therefore sad & a bit graphic, so I definitely don't recommend this book for younger or very sensitive readers), and readers are left to see that while life isn't always fair, even in the hardest times we, like Katrien and Brigitta, can find courage to face the changes and go on.

Beauty from Ashes

I read this to my children who are 11, 13, & 15. They all enjoyed it. The chapters are short, so we usually read 2-3 chapters a night. The first half of the book acquaints the reader with Katrien, and the changing relationships and expectations she is dealing with as a young teenager. The the volcano erupts, and her life, and the book, are forever changed. Now the descriptions are of life-and-death situations, which lead to descriptions of the horrid aftermath of the disaster. The author handles it well, but it may not be suited to younger children. But then comes the beauty from the ashes as Katrien not only survives, but heals and grows into the beautiful person that her father and aunt had tried to mold.
