Edgar and Mary stood with Mr. Blood, the Dark Hunter, in front of a “house that was rotting away.” It was a creepy looking place, but the children both sensed they’d somehow been there before. Mr. Blood, who was like their father, was trying to get them to remember something about that house. “Why don’t you,” he asked, “try to remember where you got those tattoos.” Each one of them sported a tattoo of a spider on the backs of their left hands. Yes, they had been to that house before, but when and why?
They pushed open a creaky old door and entered the cobweb-filled house. Strange, but with all the cobwebs there were no spiders to be found. The only ones in the room were the ones on the back of their hands. Mary’s hand began to itch, but soon there would be some really strange things happening in that house. Edgar and Mary both felt very odd. “I can feel like I can almost remember something,” Mary declared. “From when we were little. A bad thing.” Just what was the bad thing she was trying to remember?
Both the children were startled into a strange reality when they saw a “very old woman standing in the middle of the room.” Something was very unsettling about the old woman who sported “long white hairs” across her face. Arak, it was Arak. She opened up those creepy cracked lips and began to warn them. “As long as you are with him, you are in danger.” They were trapped in the house, but was there a greater evil lurking outside in the form of Mr. Blood, the Dark Hunter?
This is a short, creepy tale that will make the hair stand up on the back of the reader’s neck. This isn’t a lengthy, nor particularly detailed tale. It’s specifically geared toward attracting the most reluctant of readers into the “Dark Hunter” series. Many youngsters are averse to cracking the pages of any book, but will gravitate toward the short, sweet, creepy tales. The read is quite fast and the dark drawings, including creepy crawly spiders and single hands with the spider tattoo, definitely add to the allure of the tale. The ending is exciting, but not unpredictable. If you have a seriously reluctant reader, this series may serve to entice him or her into the pages of a book.

This is an easy chapter book

This is an easy chapter book, what I call a high-low reader. It's a horror story featuring a scary old woman, spiders and a demon. Much more scary than a Goosebumps book but shorter and easier to read. Not for little children though the reading level would seem to make it so. A decent story for what it is, obviously with this limited a vocabulary the story can't be very detailed, but it is a creepy little tale which is quite rare at this reading level. Best suited for mature children or reluctant teen readers.
