Accomplished children’s author Napoli has her finger on the pulse of what young people want to read, and Egypt, with its mummies, pharaohs, and pyramids, is a perennial favorite. Yet Egyptian mythology remains somewhat ignored, making the content of this book, while familiar, feel quite fresh. It begins with a brief introduction to the genesis of Egyptian culture and a primer on its glyphs and naming conventions. Creation stories and enmeshed tales of a panoply of gods are told in a highly stylized way. (An illustrated cast of characters in the back matter clarifies the confusing litany of deities.) Balit’s Egyptian-styled illustrations are spectacular and given a proper sandstone-and-tile border. Egyptian mythology is not nearly as common as its Greek and Roman counterparts, but is every bit as engaging, lyrical, and reflective of the cultural beliefs of the civilization in which it finds its origins. DONNA JO NAPOLI is professor of linguistics at Swarthmore College, mother of five, grandmother of two, and the author of more than seventy books for children and young adults. Smearing Set's name since the Hyksos

The only thing that saves this book is the colorful art. Other than that, It gets Egyptian mythology constantly wrong. I love how they replace Set with Thoth in one tale because Set is supposed to be our devil figure, then it calls Set a liar for claiming he protects Ra. Archeological proof has never shown Thoth fighting Apep, always Set or Bastet. Our Education these days, folks. Teaching children to think in black and white, regardless of well known evidence. (Yes, I understand Egyptian mythology can be contradictory, but that doesn't mean we should make stuff up when we are trying to be educational.)

Beautifully written!

I am a 7th grade language arts teacher and I could not wait for this book to arrive. I already own Napoli's Treasury of Greek Mythology, and her Egyptian storybook is equally as wonderful as the Greek one. Napoli writes with such a compelling sense of voice that readers are pulled into the stories. Egyptian mythology is complicated, especially to young readers, but Napoli is a masterful storyteller and she is able to create such beautiful, accessible stories from a complex, ancient set of stories. She has clearly done her research, as there is a really helpful section explaining information such as the origins of names, the variations of details over time and her decision process as she wrote, how the Greeks influenced the stories and names. The stories also have inset boxes with nonfiction information about details related to the stories -- funeral practices, mummification, hieroglyphs, building of pyramids, legally accepted practices at the time, desert life, etc). The illustrations are gorgeous. I would say this book is geared for middle school and above readers, but would be well suited for read-alouds with younger children. It's a must-have for anyone teaching about ancient Egyptian society and mythology. Love, love, LOVE this book!!!
