A Wonderful Adventure for Young Readers!

Patch goes to London by Anjalique Gupta is the adorable story of a very clever little Jack Russell called Patch, and his adventures in London. He has a very loving mom who absolutely dotes on him. They live in India. On his collar, Patch notices a shiny gold thing, a key, and he wonders what it is for. His mom tells him he’ll find out soon enough when his first birthday arrives. Patch can hardly wait because his first birthday is almost here! His friends give him lovely gifts but Patch is eager to see his birthday surprise. The postman delivers a parcel that has come all the way from the United Kingdom. Inside is a wooden chest and, at his mom’s suggestion, Patch uses the key to open it. Wow! What a surprise. Inside he finds a pet passport (with his name on it!) and an air ticket to London. It’s all a big mystery but by going to London, Patch will be able to piece together the clues as they unfold in an absolutely amazing adventure. Join Patch as he collects clues and finds out some incredible news at the end of his adventure.

This is a truly wonderful book for young readers to either read by themselves or enjoy reading with a parent or grandparent. Patch’s cute character is based on a real dog, owned by the author, and he has been lucky enough to travel the world with his human mom. The illustrations by Alexandra Gold on each page are just enchanting and make the book into a vivid adventure for young readers. I loved all the details on each page, which will definitely get kids and parents looking up more about each famous landmark where Patch receives yet more clues. The canine characters that give Patch each new clue are too cute for words and every dog is a different breed, adding more interest for young readers who love animals. The good news is that this is just the first of Patch’s adventures in globe trotting. I wonder where Patch will go next. At the end of the book, young fans can keep up with Patch on his Facebook page and Instagram, where no doubt he’ll drop hints about his next destination. A really lovely read that kids will return to time and time again.

Indiana Jones for kids but with a adorable Jack russell terrier as the lead. Highly recommended!

I have two boys 9 and 6 who love books and love reading. So I'm constantly looking for the next series of books in their reading range. Some they like, some they detest. I came across this book by word of mouth from a close friend who suggested that I take a look at it and I'm very glad that I did! Right from the cover to the fascinating lead character, it captures you with its very vivid imagination and illustrations. Kids will be fascinated and intrigued with Patch and will be eager to follow his journey from his home to London. Adults will love reading the book to their toddler or young kids because it takes you on a ride and a tour of sorts through London. Think Indiana Jones for kids!! Its an easy read for early readers 1st graders and above. My 9 year loved reading it and kept asking me when the next adventure was going to come out. We have both read it out to m 6 year old who also loved it and recommended my golden retriever as a companion for the next adventure in St.Louis USA!! The possibilities are endless for Patch. This is an excellent first book and the author lays a solid foundation for Patch and we (yes me included) cant wait to see where Patch goes next.

We loved the book so much that I ordered at least 6 copies as Christmas presents for my extended family with kids and they have all loved it.
Special kudos to the illustrator for helping bringing this fantastic story to life with the bright and spectacular images that help make it easy for kids and adults alike to interpret the story.

Highly recommended for young kids!! (and adults who like adventures and dogs!)

Wonderful, packed with a lot of goodness..

Let me start with saying that my kids love this book and so do I. It is a wonderful read - so much information in just one book (kind of like 'The very Hungry Caterpillar' if you know what I mean). On first Birthday, Patch get a birthday present where he needs to go and explore the world to find the meaning of all the clues he gets. The colors are vibrant and the book is a solid, sturdy with smooth finished edges It teaches about various modes of transport, London's top attractions, Dog Breeds and all incorporated in one big treasure hunt.It would be great as a bedtime story for a young child to prompt a discussion or conversation. The surprise element in the book keeps the kids engrossed and entertained and they want me to read it to them everyday. I can't wait to get hold of the next book in this series - not to be missed at any cost.

Use in the classrom to launch a unit of study with thoughtful discussion, to build vocabulary, as a mentor for writing

There's a lot of potential for classroom use of this book--to launch a community service project, to nurture small group discussions, and as a mentor for writing informational text. I'd read this aloud to students in the primary and perhaps intermediate grades. It's long so I think I'd read 2-3 parts each day for a week maybe and pose questions for small groups to discuss like "What did you learn about one group that is helping the community?" and "Why is their work important?" and "How did the author/photographer reveal the importance of this work?" and "One of Ancona's messages is that volunteer work can be fun. How does he reveal this?" and "How does this group's work differ from that one's?"

Ancona's writing is clear and cohesive. Close reading of a section of this text might benefit students who are seeking to write about community organizations or doing research on a similar topic. For example, students could read a particular section (each section is about a different group doing community work) and discuss, "How does Ancona introduce the group or organization?" and "What does he describe or explain?" and "How does this help the reader develop clarity?"

Also, if you are launching a unit on community service, there's great vocabulary in the book to highlight - shelter, community farm, food depot, etc.

One disappointment--but not a deal breaker. I tend to think of Ancona as an author/photographer of the Mexican American experience. (He was born in Brooklyn and his parents were Mexican immigrants.) I shouldn't pigeonhole him. My apologies. At the same time, I was disappointed that a larger variety of faces were not revealed in this book. I did notice a variety of names that could represent different ethnic groups, but visually there wasn't much distinction except for one group towards the end of the book (from the Boys and Girls Club). It's not a deal breaker - I'd still use the book. There's just room for some critical thinking with students about the author/photographer/publisher choices. And perhaps, there is more diversity than I'm aware of - maybe a discussion with students would reveal this to me.

Where are the faces of my students in these beautiful photos?

A book with a powerful message. However, I am disappointed that the faces of children on these pages do not reflect the diversity in my school. I want my students to see themselves in these pages. Please consider adding them in a 2nd edition.

How Can We Help is a wordy picture book showing how kids can help with the world/environment. It gives examples of what kids like you can do! Other readers would enjoy this book because it shows that kids can help and how they care about the world too. It is interesting to see what kids all around the world can do. Moving from jobs (Clothesline Clue to Jobs People Do, 2012) to sports, Helig, Hembrook, and Davies keep children guessing.

"High on the clotheslines / the clues swing and sway. / Who uses these things / for the sports that they play?" Seven clotheslines hold clothing and sometimes equipment (not all of which is typically washed), with more underneath the line or propped against the uprights. Pinstriped pants and shirt, a cap, and a glove hang above a bat, bases, and a ball. Readers guess and then turn the page for the reveal: "He plays baseball." (Boston fans beware: the pinstripes are paired with red socks.) With a nod to diversity, the men fence and play baseball and football. Women play soccer, tennis, and basketball and do archery. An inquisitive (and sometimes mischievous) squirrel appears on every clothesline page, and the reveals always show a glimpse of the school bus from the title page. It all comes full circle at the end when the children try out these sports during Sports Day at school. The rhythms and rhymes are solid, and the verses nicely incorporate the vocabulary for the equipment and clothing used. Skin tones are a mix of peach and browns, but all the people are able-bodied. Too, the women tend to pair up with girls and the men with boys.

CLOTHESLINE CLUES TO SPORTS PEOPLE PLAY by Kathryn Heling and Deborah Hembrook is a rhyming picture book that engages young readers in a sports guessing game.

Each two-page spread shows clothes and equipment along with text information. Readers are asked about the sport the items represents. The next page reveals the answer. The sports players represent a mixture of genders and races. Although a variety of body shapes are represented, no noticeably disabled players are included.

A companion to Clothesline Clues to Jobs People Do, librarians will find that this series of informational books provides endless possibilities for classroom activities. Consider connecting this story with nonfiction books exploring each sport represented.

Great for PreK-kinder classroom

Simple but fun for PreK or ages 3-5. I'd read this aloud to students and then put it in my classroom library for them to look at again and again. The illustrations support the students in their attempts to "read" the text again with a friend; in other words, they can recall the clues and then the patterned text for the following page "She plays X." The same could happen at home - read it aloud to your child and then he or she may pick up and do the "reading" back to you.

I also liked Clothesline Clues to Jobs People Do by the same authors.

I wanted to love this book

As a homeschooler, a mother, and someone who feels an understanding of others' history is key, I wanted to love this book. I shared it with my 5 year-old, and was surprised that she didn't really get as excited about the beautiful photos as I did. The photos are definitely a high point. They show the beauty of the decoration created and worn by Native Americans. Now, back to the start, I was a little confused by the title, because while I expected the book to be about historical points, it was illustrated with mostly modern or recreated photos and talked about the tribes mostly in past tense. I would have preferred a bit more focus, either on the early times and how the tribes lived before colonization or on the distinguishing characteristics of the tribes, or even on the tribal traditions. (That's the grown-up confusion, I don't think 1st graders or other young children look at any given book with this kind of depth.)
What I was missing was the acknowledgement that the tribes are still part of society, and that while they have changed, they have not disappeared (mostly). What I enjoyed was the intriguing details, like women building the homes or the use of tendons for bows. As a read-aloud or group study, this could be a great beginning note, to talk about the pictures, discuss the text, and go on to research historical photos, artwork, and information. As a casual read, it gives facts about the tribes, but doesn't have the consistent pattern for comparison of tribes.
Overall: It's not offensive, but it's not an entirely accurate depiction either. It may draw children's interest to learn more about the Native American cultures and history with the decorations and headdresses. I felt good about sharing it with my daughter, to give her basic awareness. I think it is worth sharing, though definitely not a definitive volume.

Misleading title. Native Americans are NOT settlers

United States History: Early American Settlers. Warning this review contains spoilers. This book is about the various Indian tribes that inhabited what we now call the United States of America. I don’t know if it is just me, but I don’t think of Native Americans as settlers. They were here long before the Pilgrims; who I do consider to be settlers; ever set foot in North America. This book intended to be a book to teach first graders about early American settlers, and yet they don’t even bother to define the term settler, or even use the word settler outside of using it once in this books title. This book is inconsistent at best when it comes to describing the tribes they choose to mention. They only choose to discuss 4 tribes without even mentioning that there were many other Native American tribes. I don’t want first graders to mistakenly believe that there were only four Native American tribes. I cannot recommend this book even as an introductory book to Native Americans. It doesn’t contain many facts and the title is misleading. A more accurate title would be United States History: Native American Tribes. Referring to Native Americans as settlers is just plain insulting myself and other fellow Native Americans.
The book starts off by Defining the term Native American. Then they go into some detail about things that were common within each tribe or group. I wish they took the time to define world like culture, customs, and language. This would make the book more educational and age appropriate. The first tribe discussed is the Apache. I like that they included 3 pictures of the Apache. This book mentions a few things like their range, and that they had bows and arrows, but they fail to mention what this tribe was known for. The Apache were most known for being a warring tribe. The next tribe discussed is the Cherokee. There are 4 high quality pictures that accompany the text about the Cherokee. I wish that they had the same number of pictures for each tribe they discuss. That would be remove any subconscious bias created in the reader by ensuring each tribe was represented fairly. Now, lets resume our discussion about the Cherokee people. This book mentions their native range, and how they lived off the land. The next tribe mentioned is the Blackfoot tribe. This book does not mention their range at all. They do mention that the main food source for the Blackfoot Indians is bison, and that they enjoy decorating their homes and clothing. I liked seeing the 4 pictures, but would have liked to at least know where they lived. The last tribe to be discussed is the Cheyenne tribe. There are entire books written about each of these tribes, so I know it is unfair to expect much from a book that is intended for first graders. I received this kindle e-book for free, (at the time of my review it is free to everyone,) in exchange for my honest review.

Great information on 4 Indian tribes

I think it is important to learn about other demographics that my children do nit encounter every day. I love using our homeschool time to do this. My kindergarten son was so attentive during this book and was intrigued by the differences of tribes. I even caught my older children listening.

This book includes a basic knowledge of 4 tribes: Apache, Cherokee, Blackfoot and Cheyenne. It includes a basic introduction page that introduces the idea of tribes. Then it follows the same pattern of 1 picture pertaining to the tribe along with an introduction of a couple of sentences. The next page is a full page picture also pertainin to the tribe. Then the 3rd page is another picture with another short snippet of information about the tribe. Then it goes to the next tribe. The information included is very age appropriate for a 1st grader and sparks and interest.

The pictures in this book are very well done. Expect lots of head dresses as that seems to be a distinguishing mark of all the tribal pictures. My son really enjoyed the picture of the decorative drawings on their hands (as shown in the picture).
