From School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2—Aviva is tired of being teased about her name. At school she is called Viva la France or, even worse, amoeba. So she takes matters into her own hands and decides to change her name to Emily. Her mother takes the change in stride, calling her daughter Emily as they make chicken soup, read a book, and look at the stars. All the while, Aviva/Emily's mom tells stories of her own grandmother Ada, who taught her to cook, to sew, to read, and so much more. At bedtime, the little girl finally asks, "Why did you name me Aviva, anyway?" Her parents explain the Jewish tradition of naming a baby after beloved family or friends who are no longer living. Grandma Ada did not live to meet her great-granddaughter, but she lives on in the choice of the name Aviva, which was her Hebrew name. As she falls asleep, Aviva decides that she is indeed Aviva, proud of her name and her heritage. Many Jewish children are curious about the origin of their names and wonder why they are unusual or old fashioned. Newman's clear and rich narrative explains the custom with warmth and appreciation for tradition. The illustrations, depicting both past and present, are a bit cartoonish for the quality of the text, but they help support the narrative. VERDICT A recommended purchase for all Judaic collections.—Martha Link Yesowitch, Charlotte Mecklenburg Library, NC

This is a touching tale that will let young children know just how special they are ...

Aviva had a perfectly nice name, but no one ever seemed to use it, like ever. “Bye, Amoeba!” Danny yelled to her as he ran by. No, she certainly wasn’t an amoeba and then there was Josette. “Aur revoir, Viva La France,” she yelled out to Aviva as she passed by. Certainly her name wasn’t Viva La France and no she didn’t look like one. No one would bother her if she climbed the monkey bars and hung upside down and so Aviva did just that. Later she sat on the swing waiting for Mommy and Lulu, her dog, to show up.

“Ready to go, Aviva?” Mommy asked as she stroked her cheek. Aviva put her on ignore too because she didn’t want to be an amoeba, a Viva La France, or an Aviva for that matter. “My name isn’t Aviva,” she told her Mommy. “My name is Emily” and so it was. Emily and Mommy walked up the street, scattering the fallen leaves and glancing in the shop windows as they walked hand-in-hand. Why on earth did Mommy and Daddy name her Aviva anyway? Mommy didn’t answer right away, but then began to talk to Emily once they got home.

Chop, chop, chop! Mommy was making some soup and there were carrots and celery to go into the pot. “Do you know who taught me to make soup, Emily?” Of course it was Grandma Ada! Emily lost a button on her pink sweater and while the soup was simmering on the stove, Mommy began to sew. “Do you know who taught me to sew?” Mommy asked Emily. Of course it was Grandma Ada! Mommy began to tell Emily all about Grandma Ada and how she worked in a factory when she was only ten. Grandma Ada’s “stitches were as fine as spider webs,” but what did that have to do with her name?

This is a delightfully charming tale about Aviva, a little girl who hated her name. Many children don’t like their names for one reason or another, sometimes because other people tease them. Aviva didn’t realize just how special her name was until Mommy told her all the wonderful things about Grandma Ada, her namesake. The tale is very special, poignant and perfect for a little one who doesn’t like their name or something else about themselves. Rather than dismiss Aviva and her request to be called ‘Emily,’ her mother allows her the freedom to do so. The artwork is beautiful and meshes perfectly with the tale. This is a touching tale that will let young children know just how special they are.
