About the Author
Stephen Krensky was born in Boston, Massachusetts. He has written over one hundred books as well as several multi-media projects for children. Stephen admits that writing is as much a craft as an art, but that writing for children is an enjoyable and rewarding process. He graduated from Hamilton College in upstate New York in 1975. Currently he lives in Lexington, MA, with his wife and two sons.
Betsy Lewin is the Caldecott Honor-winning illustrator of CLICK, CLACK, MOO: COWS THAT TYPE and its sequels, GIGGLE, GIGGLE, QUACK; DUCK FOR PRESIDENT; in addition to a number of other picture books and early readers. She lives in Brooklyn, New York.

Very good author...fun book.

I picked this up at the library as a beginning reader for my daughter and was surprised to see that the author was a favorite young adult fiction writer of mine. Out of the stack of books I grabbed at random, this was far and away the best one. Simple but imaginative, and the illustrations inside were much better than the cover art would suggest. At the heart of the story is a fun message too, as the cats talk themselves out of a bunch of irrational fears and end up contented enough to doze off.

Cute and Sweet

Fraidy cats is the great type of learning book that kids enjoy reading because of a fun story. The story - which has cats in bed being afraid of normal noises and making up scary thoughts about them ("Is it a cute baby eagle? No, it's the big scary cat eating kind!". In the end, the noise of trucks outside is imagined to be a dinosaur - but a gentle plant eating one that will protect the cats from anything else scary. This allows them to sleep.
What's fun is that children can use their own imagination to figure out what the cats are going to make of normal noises or objects that scare them: such as a garden hose becoming a snake.
This is one part of a great series of early reading books: More Spaghetti I say, Two Crazy Pigs, Fraidy Cats, and The Day the Dog Said Cock a Doodle Doo!. I recommend all of them for their appropriate vocabulary, sentence length, reinforced learning through creative repetition, and beautiful bright illustrations.

Very silly!

"It must be an ultrasaur," said Sorry. "The biggest, heaviest dinosaur that ever lived. We're doomed."
This is the story of two Fraidy Cats, Scamper and Sorry. When they go to bed, they assume that the first sound they hear is the sound of a big dog that is trying to get them. and as they hear more and more noises, they tell themselves that each sound is another, scarier creature that is out to get them!
My little reader and I both really enjoyed this book. It's very silly, with cute illustrations that add to the funniness of the story. We both highly recommend this book!
