Best available book for learning Amharic
By RR
From its contents, this is simply the best available book for learning Amharic. The texts and the vocabulary are useful. The grammatic is explained in a detailed, but easy-to-understand way.

One drawback is the quality of the book binding, which is not strong enough for a book of such a size and a book, which is used very heavily, like a language-learning-book.,

This is for you if you are serious about learning Amharic
By Rasmus Sonderriis
This is the only book out there that really explains Amharic writing, vocabulary and grammar in a didactic manner. It is for the serious learner. If you are extremely serious, you might want to complement it with Wolf Leslau's "Introductory Grammar of Amharic".

Review
2015 Moonbeam Children's Book Award Winner: Best Illustrator, Silver Medal

New Mexico's National Book Festival Selection for 2016

"Not since Horace Greeley has the American West had such a vocal advocate...Nakamura blends fact, fable, and fantasy in a vision that goes well beyond the West being a place where the deer and antelope play. "Go west! Where alarm clocks have legs and feathers," he writes, hand-drawing the text as a rooster's crow; nearby, celestial objects dot the dust at the bird's feet, a campfire coffeepot runs off on two legs, and a hybrid dog/cowboy hat dreams of bacon and eggs...it's a vibrantly imagined and illustrated tribute to the magic of the West and its wide-open spaces." –Publishers Weekly

"Cowgirls and cowboys can dance the two-step off into the sunset of this gorgeous picture book. Nakamura's bold rainbow of paint colors evokes the timeless natural beauty of the American West, and his whooping prose will echo across the mountain peaks of children's imaginations." Ages three and up. – 5 out of 5 STARS, Foreword Reviews Magazine: Best Children's Picture Books, Fall 2015

"Wolves, coyotes, roadrunners, cowgirls, cacti, mesas, smoke signals, and chile peppers all make an appearance, lending the book the flavor that is at once contemporary, historic, and mythic. It's a delight for adults as well as children. The author's full-page illustrations, hand-painted using cactus spines, capture the spirit of the land, and he fills each composition with small details that make a second read more enriching than the first." –Pasatiempo Magazine of Arts, Entertainment & Culture

"I was thoroughly enchanted by Go West!, Joel Nakamura’s delightful new children's book. The amazing illustrations and whimsical story perfectly capture the enduring appeal of “the west.” The book would fill a unique spot in any picture book collection and it would be a wonderful addition to storytimes. Libraries would be well-served to add this charming book to their shelves." –Bonnie Weber, Whittier Library

‘Soon’ fits so perfectly into this family of books.
By Alpha Reader
‘Soon’ is the surprise (at least it was to me!) fifth book in Australian author Morris Gleitzman’s incredible ‘Once’ series of books for younger readers … though, as Gleitzman says in a letter to readers at the end, he prefers to think of these as a ‘family of books’ rather than a series, because they can be read out of order or stand-alone.

When we left young Felix in fourth book ‘After’ (way back in 2012) World War Two was drawing to a close. Our young Jewish protagonist had lost much to this war and the Nazi’s – his mother and father, dear friend and faithful companion Zelda and too many acquaintances along the way. When we meet up with Felix and his protector, Gabriek, again in ‘Soon’ the war is indeed over … but danger still looms for Poland.

I’m crazy about this series. I recommend it to everyone I know – young, old, teachers and reluctant readers – Morris Gleitzman’s ‘Once’ series is among this prolific author’s best work, which is really saying something when many of his books have been turned into stage plays and won countless prestigious awards. I know that all the primary school teachers in my family and friendship group (and there are a lot of them!) are particularly grateful to this series, for allowing them to tackle these incredibly difficult subjects in the classroom in a way that kids can both understand, be deeply affected by and still utterly consumed by the story.

Through Gleitzman’s books, these teachers have broached the subject of war, Holocaust, death, persecution and prejudice with very young children for whom this is the first they’re finding out how awful the world can be, and has been in humanity’s dark past. In all my dealings with youth literature, I find that I live by one rule above all others, which Morris Gleitzman said at Melbourne Writers Festival 2012 – “If it’s in the world, it’s for them.”

Because it’s important that kids know these stories, no matter how awful and tragic. I visited Japan last year, and when I went to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum I found this amazing bookshop that sold picture books, graphic novels and chapter books for all ages, across many languages, aimed at children on the topics of World War Two and the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in particular. Because children, even very young children, have to know these stories so that future generation don’t repeat mistakes of the past.

And that’s really what ‘Soon’ is about. The Soviet Red Army pushed out Nazi German forces from occupied Poland, and readers find Felix and Gabriek at the beginning of Soviet communist dominance at the end of the World War Two, over what had become the Polish People's Republic. Gleitzman is glimpsing the periods of social unrest in the country that was trying to heal the scars of war – and Felix starts to comprehend how nothing takes so long to heal as the horrors of war.

Readers have witnessed the traumas that shaped Felix into the strong, kind man of ‘Now’, and in ‘Soon’ we’re still witnessing that transformation unfold. For Felix in this book, it’s really a push-pull of doing the right thing and still struggling to survive.

And there is a lot of violence in this book - don't be fooled that just because the war is over, this is going to be any less a harrowing story. One event in particular happens concerning a woman, so teachers/parents out there may want to read this book so they can have conversations with children afterwards about what happened. I don't think that means children shouldn't read this book - and I'm not advising that "gatekeepers" keep it away from kids, not at all - it absolutely has place in the story because it is speaking to a very true history of war (past and present, sadly).

This book is Felix coming to the realisation of how wars get started in the first place, when good people who know better stand by and do nothing in the face of other’s suffering. And that’s such a big truth that Morris Gleitzman is presenting to young readers in the tender, beautiful ‘Soon’ that fits so perfectly into this family of books.

Not as good as Once, Then and After
By John Rotenstein
I have read the entire ONCE series after my son was assigned to read it as school. The series is wonderful and now my whole family has read and enjoyed the series.

However, I didn't feel that SOON was up to the same standard as the earlier books (especially Once, Then and After). The story is relatively short. The only 'new concepts' it introduces is the Nazi use of humans for medical experiments and the fact that life can be just as hard after a war as during. It is not as emotionally confronting as the earlier books, and that emotional confrontation is what made the earlier books so significant.

From School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1—A girl narrates in rhyming couplets the various sights she sees while hiking through Arizona's Grand Canyon, including flora and fauna, park workers, and evidence of past human habitation. An abrupt change in setting on the last page shows the narrator in what appears to be her city bedroom, reflecting on her experiences. A note about the author's experience visiting the Grand Canyon joins a glossary and a short list of websites as back matter. Wolff's bold block print and gouache illustrations, featuring strong black outlines, are the highlight of this offering. Sweeping natural vistas, seen from a point of view just above the action, alternate with close-ups of the narrator and her ranger and animal companions. The large serif typeface, sometimes printed in black and sometimes in white, is easy for beginning readers to decode. However, the words sometimes seem designed more for rhymes than for description or plot ("Now it's really getting steep,/and there's the river, way down deep!"), and couplets occasionally include partial rhymes ("and a lizard, still as sand/his head all speckled, body tan") or an extra syllable that requires eliding when reading aloud ("Here's a little hidey-hole,/home to sneaky squirrel or vole"). VERDICT Purchase if the Grand Canyon is of strong local interest, or to add to a collection in need of easy to read geography picture books.—Jill Ratzan, I. L. Peretz Community Jewish School, Somerset, NJ

Review
Equipped with a map, boots, a walking stick, and a jaunty trail hat, a girl ventures from the rim of the Grand Canyon down to the Colorado River at the very bottom. In expansive block prints whose radiant colors and heroic characterizations recall vintage murals, Wolff (Baby Bear Sees Blue) portrays her intrepid heroine as confident and largely independent (while her parents accompany her, they remain background characters), in the midst of an adventure that’s every bit as grand as the setting’s name promises. Winding through billions of years of striated stone, the girl spots petroglyphs and mule trains, as well as majestic bighorn sheep, speckled lizards, and soaring condors. Scanlon (The Good-Pie Party) builds many couplets around the use of the contraction “here’s” (“Here’s a tree with roots in rock,/ and hello, Mr. Red-Tailed Hawk!”), creating the sense that readers are witnessing each sight or discovery right alongside the girl. Readers may well close the book demanding that the next family vacation takes them into the wild. (Publishers Weekly June 1, 2015)

Sweeping natural vistas, seen from a point of view just above the action, alternate with close-ups of the narrator and her ranger and animal companions. The large serif typeface, sometimes printed in black and sometimes in white, is easy for beginning readers to decode....VERDICT Purchase if the Grand Canyon is of strong local interest, or to add to a collection in need of easy to read geography picture books. (School Library Journal July 2015)

The Grand Canyon? That nearly 2 billion-year-old, 277-mile-long, and 1-mile-deep "crevice" in northern Arizona? Never heard of it? Well, grab a hat and backpack and follow an intrepid young hiker as she takes readers from the rim to the canyon floor while pointing out sights in sprightly, two-line rhymes. "The clouds come up, the wind blows in / the shadows fall upon hot skin." Wolff's linoleum-block prints colored in gouache meticulously detail native plants and wildlife amid the landscape. Warm tans, oranges, and yellows bring the magnificent canyon to life along with Scanlon's collegial, nature-guide commentary....Striking endpapers feature a double-page spread of popular canyon landmarks with a tagged California condor soaring in the foreground. The author's note and fact-filled glossary keep the story from bogging down while providing relevant historical and scientific information. Internet URLs are included for the National Park Service, Grand Canyon Association, and National Geographic. Nature lovers of all ages will welcome the easy accessibility of this Grand Canyon tribute. (Kirkus Reviews June 15, 2015)

This book will appeal to teachers and young readers who are interested in nature’s beauty. Scanlon takes readers on a poetic walk through the Grand Canyon, describing native canyon animals, their homes, and hidey holes. Bold illustrations create the stunning atmosphere of this amazing Southwestern treasure. Students studying animals will appreciate the accurate depictions of native fauna. An author’s note is included. A map gives the reader a bird’s eye view of the canyon trail, and details points of interest along the way. Curriculum connections abound: poetry, geography, and treasures of the United States. Young students, teachers, and librarians will appreciate the detail of animals, native plants, and the canyon; the poetry will help students remember what they have read. Glossary. Websites. Rhyming text introduces a young girl on her way to the adventure of a lifetime: a hike to the bottom of the

Grand Canyon. Black linoleum block prints colored with gouache illustrate each double-page spread, and

bold browns, yellows, and deep reds capture the canyon environment, as well as the people and mules

hiking on the long trek downward. As the girl descends deeper and deeper into the gorge, she finds a

squirrel in a hidey-hole and a speckled lizard, and at trail’s end, she sits by the moonlit river. The story and

glorious illustrations celebrate the ever-changing beauty of one of our national wonders; back matter

contains a glossary with an explanation of some of the animals, and a brief history of the Grand Canyon’s

formation, while endpapers show a map of the hikers’ route. Excellent for sharing with groups and

families, and an inspiring introduction to this miraculous, wild place. (Booklist Online December 3, 2015)

By MLG
In the Canyon is a picture book about a little girl with a spirit of adventure. Seen through the girl’s eyes, Liz Garton Scanlon and Ashley Wolff capture the ancient majesty of the Grand Canyon in simple rhyme and stunning illustrations.
As the girl makes the journey with her parents and a group of other adventurers, she experiences a connection to nature which doesn’t end when the journey’s over. It’s a feeling that is hers to keep forever. Home to a variety of wildlife, rocks, and plants, the illustrations bring the experience to life through vibrant color and texture.
In the Canyon inspires adventure and an appreciation for nature. This is the kind of book that families will love.

Good read before a trip to the Grand Canyon....
By Bob Walch
I'd say this is a MUST READ for children four and older if their family plans either a trip to the Grand Canyon or, perhaps, a trip down the trail to the canyon's bottom. Excellent illustrations and an easy to read text make this a book beginning readers can manage too. Let a leg up on your trip and show the little ones what they can expect to see....Enjoy!

This is a beautifully written and illustrated book for children that teaches about desert landscapes and, specifically, the Grand Canyon by taking young readers on an adventure along the walls. Highlighting indigenous flora and fauna, Wolff's illustrations are rich and incredibly detailed with a color palette that mirrors the actual landscape. It's easy to get lost in the pictures and how they intersect with the narrative. A real favorite!

You are one of the best minecraft book authors out there. When I saw that this book was out I was like: o.o, then: 0.0, an finally: ^_^ because I was happy. To be honest I thought my suggestion was kind of stupid (because wither skeletons don't wear armor and ride horses, but there are chicken jockeys so... Anyways great book (no not great book... awesome book!)

Review
I love the perfect simplicity of this story. Squire shows us that the spectrum of feelings with loss are not right or wrong. They simply are. --Tricia Lott Williford

Beautifully told. Squire and Daniel is a sweet children's tale helping young and old wrestle with the loss of someone close. It shows us all that life is still worth living and we honor our loved ones by sharing all they've meant to us and giving that to others. --Susan Baganz

Squire and Daniel is as profound and beautiful as it comes. The poignant theme of surviving loss by learning to live again allows you to talk to your children about a little covered issue in children's literature, but one we increasingly need to address. However, it will just as easily be a gift for an adult who is trying to figure out life after a devastating loss--whether permanent or not. The best part of the book is that it doesn't just deal with loss and leave you in the dumps, it shows Squire learning how to live again as he makes new friends, notices sweet things, and hopes for the future. --Denise Wynn

I purchased this book for my two year old son, who lost his big sister to cancer just over a year ago. Despite his young age, he is able to understand the gravity of the loss in this book as it relates to him. He loves reading it and I do to. I believe that this story will help him understand that he is not alone as he tries to understand what it means to lose a loved one.
