A nice book to teach how one good deed can snowball into many good deeds!

One Good Deed is based on the Jewish concept of Tikkun Olam (repairing the world) by performing acts of kindness.

It recalls a story of a young boy who lives in a street where everything is "dark and gloomy" and the neighbours "don't smile at each other...or talk to each other... or help each other". One day the young boy has an idea to help his neighbour and that sparks the neighbour's will to help her neighbour and so on.

The illustrations are colourful, detailed and engaging for little eyes. Even the little birds in the background are helpful (or not) to each other throughout the book. The people in the book are all racially diverse, which is not often seen in many children's books.

I like this story. It demonstrates how doing one thoughtful act of kindness can spur others to do likewise. It is an important lesson for children to learn and this book illustrates it in an easy to understand manner. They will be encouraged and motivated to help out and do a good deed!

However, the two things that are disappointing about this book (which may not disappoint other parents): a) G-d is not mentioned once; b) the word "mitzvah" is translated as a "good deed" in the story (although, at the end of the book in the notes, the author correctly states that a "mitzvah" is actually a commandment from G-d, not just a good deed).

I am concerned with the book being a paperback that my son's enthusiastic hands will tear the book and if it becomes available in another format, I'd probably buy it.

Overall, a highly enjoyable book, with engaging illustrations and a worthwhile story line with a valuable lesson in kindness to others! Highly recommended!

They arrive just in time to see Jake win the Downhill Derby in his little replica of the grandparents van. Of course, all the other competing vehicles are replicas of the cars, trucks, etc. that Gramps and Granny passed on their way. This is a delightful choice for preschoolers who adore cars and trucks of any kind. There are lots of details in the colorful illustrations for the child to search. What better way is there to learn about poetry than penning a few yourself? Once you get the hang of acrostic poems, you'll probably be creating them all the time. Of course Brian Cleary is a master of verse, who has now branched out into haiku, lantern poetry, concrete, and now acrostic. There are lessons to be learned and, in addition to teaching us how to write the acrostic poem, he gives some very visual fun example of some. Young students are encouraged to create a few of their own.

Brian Cleary's introduction lets us know that not all poetry is created equal and that acrostic poems "can be structured in a variety of ways." The instructions and visuals are a perfect way to introduce the acrostic to the young student. The first letter of each poem is highlighted Ina bright red, making it easy to understand the structure of an acrostic poem. A mini-biographical acrostic about himself is an excellent example.

"Bow-tie wearer.

"Really likes baseball.

"Insanely happy.

"Always going places.

"Never eats centipedes."

Young students are give a list of suggestions, something that just might kick start them into a fun venture into poetry. A Cute Book on Poetry, Kids will Love it!

This is a great book to read or to use when teaching or learning about poetry. In the description it states: Bow-Tie Pasta is packed with acrostics to make you snicker and snort. And when you've finished reading, you can try your hand at writing your own poems! This is a wonderful description of this book. I loved the poems and learned something about Acrostic Poetry while reading it. From GIGGLES to LIBRARY, from INDIA to HOTDOG, you can't help but smile when reading these poems. There is a section at the beginning of the book descibing what an Acrostic Poem is and at the end their are resources you can look at on the internet. I recommend that all English classrooms and school libraries get a copy of this book.

Readers learn about many intriguing airplane-car hybrids, such as the Airphibian, invented by Robert Fulton, who flew his vehicle at 110 miles per hour, landed it, single-handedly converted it into a car in under five minutes, then "drove the convertible proudly into Manhattan at a breezy 55 miles per hour." These stories of invention are undeniably appealing, although Glass's storytelling sometimes obscures the history, and extraneous details occasionally distract from the book's focus. The author does not explicitly define the difference between a flying car and a plane with wheels. This distinction only becomes clear after a few chapters, and readers may be put off by lengthy technical descriptions. While a brief glossary follows the text, terms like carburetor, piston, gondola, and horsepower are not defined. It's a Car! It's a Plane! It's a Carplane?

Flying Cars is about an odd bit of aviation history where the norm is the belief that, at some point, everyone would have had a car capable of flight in their garage. Well, okay, not everybody, but enough people that flying cars would seem normal and not just a novelty. The book is written at a level that middle grade readers can easily digest, and a number of pictures and illustrations are present. There are resources and a glossary included for those who want to know more. Glass does a good job of providing some history of flight while highlighting the more significant and successful attempts at creating cars that are also airplanes.

A Great Reference to one of the Greatest Design Dreams

This is a wonderfully illustrated book on the narrow subject of flying cars. It summarizes almost 20 different attempts at making a vehicle that can both drive and fly. At times there are hairs being split during the early days of flight, but as the books goes on chronologically it zeros in more and more on the holy grail of a flying car.

My oldest son is dreaming of becoming a pilot and dove into this book. Serendipitously, we live just a few miles from a private plane museum that has a Taylor Car Plane. The fact that this book ends with a large chapter on that plane is perfect, and we plan on going to see it on their next open house.

In some ways this is a strange book in that it is not narrated through the book, but rather is a chronological reference of all the attempts at solving this design problem. Some of the entries are short and go no further than more than a prototype, while others truly take to the skies (and roads) and spread over many pages. At 100 pages and well illustrated, it is an easy read and I know of at least three of my kids and their friends have burned through it in the last couple of weeks. Personally, I finished it in a couple commutes.

Highly recommended for aspiring inventors, pilots or vehicularly curious young ones.

Interesting stories and photos of real life flying cars

This is a book that is very much history through pictures. The author went through history and found as many examples of flying cars as possible. For each, there is a photo, or a drawing if it's very old, since some of these go back to the 1700s. If you thumb through the pages, it is mostly text with a picture on maybe every other page. The text tells the story of each flying car - how it was invented, any attempted or successful flights, etc. There aren't footnotes and the writing is breezy for me. I found it interesting, and I don't even care about cars. It's something that the grades 5 to 8 recommended age can read, and even reading through the photos and captions and then reading the interesting parts is a good option.

In this day and age of the internet, sometimes it's better to just read about things online. This book is better than what you can find by surfing the web. It pulls together photos and stories and holds together well to make one solid story.

Overall, if this book looks interesting to you, it's worth reading. It has a good delivery, lots of pictures of real flying car designs, and a well written easy-to-read text that's good for young adults or adults. I don't care about cars and I liked it.

Waste of Money

I should have been wary when the images didn't show the calendar pages, just the pictures, because this calendar is a waste of money.
The spaces for days are ridiculously small. It's like having a purse-size datebook on your wall.
The names of the months should have been reduced so that there's actually space to write within the days.
Save your money and buy something else.

After exiting the highway and finding himself atop a winding mountain road in the middle of nowhere, he asks directions to Mutt Street from a bird in the desert, a book-reading leopard in the jungle, and other animals ( That way they all respond) in what begins to feel like an actual around-the-world journey. Garland pares the text down to the bare essentials while his sculptural illustrations give the story a surreal quality that is right in step with the quirky nature of Pete s globe-trotting voyage. A huge dog named Pete gets really lost on the way to Grandma's house for a birthday celebration. The story opens with Pete wrapping a box in flowered paper and making a birthday card. He sets off in his yellow car with the present, a bouquet of flowers, and his suitcase, on his way to Grandma's house on Mutt Street. But when Pete gets off the crowded freeway, he quickly gets lost and finds himself in a forest. He asks for directions, and a different animal answers on each spread, using a simple, repeated format that will easily be followed both by emergent readers and by toddlers just getting used to comprehending stories with a plot. The environments change with each new animal, taking Pete around the world on his journey to Grandma's; a whale finally gives Pete and his car a lift back to reality. A German shepherd police officer tells Pete he's already on Mutt Street, leading to a wordless final spread with Grandma opening her gift, a ribbon-wrapped bone. Digitally produced illustrations create a dreamy, imaginative world in which a bear can drive a car and a jaguar can read a book in a rain forest. For any beginning reader. Lost Dog is a GRL C book that has the most adorable main character. Pete wants to visit his grandma for her birthday but he gets lost when he decides to take another route. Along the way he meets new animals that help by giving him directions. When he finally gets to Grandma’s house he has the perfect birthday gift for her. I love the ‘I Like to Read’ books because they continue be “real” books for beginning readers. They even have a short blurb on the back that readers can use to get their mind ready to ready and make predictions.

My grandson gave me 5 stars for buying this book!

I purchased this book for my grandson's 9th birthday. He isn't the strongest reader, but he loved this book, finished every page, loved sharing what he was learning with his mom and sister, and asked if there were more books like it. Luckily, there is a second book, so I ordered it and he's loving that one as well. Now I'm hoping Mr. Probst has a few more like these in the works so I can add them to my grandson's library.
