About the Author
Diana Pishner Walker was born in Clarksburg, WV and is the daughter of the late Louis and Anna Allessio Pishner. She attended Notre Dame High School in Clarksburg, WV and graduated in 1977. She attended Fairmont State College, Fairmont WV and is employed by the Marion County Board of Education as a "Fast ForWord" computer aide at East Dale Elementary School.

Diana resides in Fairmont, WV with her husband Mark and their three children Curt, Courtney, Chris and his wife Ashley. They have two grandsons Ashton Louis and Austin Maddox.

Diana's Italian roots run deep. Her maternal grandparents were from San Giovani in Fiore, Province of Cosenza, Italy. Her paternal grandparents were from Caulonia, Reggio Calabria Italy.

About the Illustrator Award-winning author and illustrator Ashley Teets is a summa cum laude graduate of Alderson-Broaddus College where she earned a bachelor's of visual arts degree with a minor in creative writing. A fun two-day read

Young witch, Mildred Hubble, is a very clumsy witch, and she is coming back to Miss Cackle’s Academy for young witches for another year of witch school. In this last book of the series, The Academy competes against other magic academies to win an indoor pool!
I like that Midred is adventurous. She flies around on broomsticks, flies up a mountain in a giant rain storm, and I thought that sounded thrilling! Mildred reminds me a lot of Hermione from the Harry Potter series.
I also like that even though this is the last book in the series, I didn’t have any trouble following along even though I didn’t read the earlier books yet. The author did a great job of re-introducing the characters to me.
I rate this book 4 stars. I typically don’t read this genre of book, but I thought this one was a very fun two-day read for me. It is best suited for young girls under age 10 who are intermediate readers, since the plot is easy to follow and the adventures are not violent at all.

Winter comes, and Adam draws jungle animals into the frosted panes of glass and sculpts an elephant in the snow, attracting the attention and friendship of other children. When he starts school, he loves the small garden on the playground, so his teacher gives him some seeds. Adam and his mother plant the seeds in their window box. Adam brings home more and more seeds, and he and his friends plant them everywhere they can, until all the window boxes are full and the rooftop is a lush retreat. "Together they made a garden in the sky." Inspired, they expand their efforts by planting "on any empty patch of ground they could find" until the gray city is transformed into a soft growing green landscape. In the end, Adam understands that "each season will bring its own wonders and colors, and that the seeds of friendship will never die." Foreman's airy watercolors support the dreamy text well, and the transformation of the dreary city is quite beautiful and inspiring. Great idea for helping young kids think and grow towards success

I bought this book because I have been looking for ways to engage my two boys in setting goals and aspirations for their future. I agree with the authors that at a early age its important to build a success team because your parents may not have the skills necessary to help you achieve your goals.

My favorite quote from the dairy was “dreaming big is a team effort”. I also think a team can help you reflect on your progress and give you a chance to questions to as well.

The activities listed in the book are interesting and I look forward to seeing how my own children put it into practice. I also agree with the authors that "When it comes to learning about goals, you simply can’t start early enough.”

Great idea!

This is a wonderful book! Kids are surrounded by people telling them what to do; teachers, parents, friends, and society in general. It is an excellent idea to have an outlet for them to get in touch with themselves at a younger age. This book does that! It gets them thinking about what they want and like, and who they are in general. It helps them to make wise choices, but not because someone is telling them to. I believe it will be a natural progression from their experience using this diary. Great job!

All the great entrepreneurs in the world like Cuban, Branson, Jobs and Gates have repeatedly said that keeping track of your goals is one of the most important character traits of a successful entrepreneur. Why don't schools teach this? So I am glad I can hand out the Successful Kid to all the boys and girls in my family, older or younger, because I believe that the mission of this book is truly great! A book like this has the potential to change the world. Onward with gusto!

This is an exciting story of Jackie Robinson, a man who really could take the heat!

Jackie Robinson quietly finished suiting up as the crowds filled Ebbets Field in Brooklyn. It was opening day, April 15, 1947, and change had come to major league baseball. It was the first time a black man would step up to the plate and "for a lot of people that was a problem." Manny Romano was a big time Dodgers fan and hoped the team would make it to the World Series. His Dad had gotten some free tickets because "One of the guys at work refused to go." It was going to be one hot game and would get hotter once Jackie stepped on the field. Manny had read about how tough it was for black people and how they "couldn't eat in certain restaurants." Times were changing, but some people wouldn't. Manny turned to his Dad and asked, "Should Jackie Robinson be here?"

Jackie's road would not be easy, but after talking about Manny's Italian grandfather his Dad simply said, "Everyone deserved a chance for a better life--his grandfather and Jackie Robinson too." Jackie stepped up to the plate to face the Braves' pitcher, Johnny Sain, only to ground out to third and listen to the wrath of the angry crowd. "You're an old man, Robinson," cried a voice from a sea of angry faces. Manny had heard that some people were wearing buttons that said, "I'm for Jackie," but this crowd didn't seem to be. His second time up at bat, he popped up to left field. No go. "You stink, Robinson! Go back where you belong." Was he going to be able to show his stuff or would his nerves get the better of him? It was the bottom of the seventh and Jackie's face was set in determination as he stepped up to the plate ...

This is an exciting story of Jackie Robinson, a man who really could take the heat. This book not only focuses on Jackie's first day with the Brooklyn Dodgers, but also on the difficulties the average African American had to face during that era. The reader will learn about racism and discrimination in the era through things Manny says he has read or through shared dialogue between father and son. There is a brief, but telling scene during the seventh-inning stretch when several boys discuss the "I'm for Jackie" button with a young African American boy is sporting one. The artwork is bold, nostalgic and meshes quite well with the story. There are many stories about Jackie for the young audience, but this one is particularly impressive. There is one page with three photographs of Jackie, including his childhood family portrait. In the back of the book is an author's note with additional biographical information, and additional recommended book and website resources.

Taking a chance on Jackie

Matty's father gets free tickets to the baseball game. It's the first game of the Dodgers' new first baseman, Jackie Robinson. Many white people don't want to see a black man play on the team. Matty remembered how his grandfather had told him that everyone deserves a chance. Matty decides to give Jackie a chance, too.

"'What do you think, Dad?' Matty asked. `Should Jackie Robinson be here?'

`I want to see the best players out there,' said his father. `I don't care what color they are. Remember, your grandfather came to America from Italy. Lots of people didn't give him a chance, either. He looked strange to them. His clothes were shabby, and he spoke English with an accent. He had to work long and hard for everything he got.'"

Great book for baseball fans of all ages.

One of the first illustrations in this fabulous book is of Jackie Robinson sitting in the locker room tying his shoes. We can only imagine what was going on in his head that day. As the story unfolds we learn that Matty's dad got two tickets to the 1947 Dodger opening game from a co-worker who doesn't want to attend the game. The co-worker does not want to see a black man play baseball. The dad takes Matty out of school early and they see history being made. The dad quietly explains why Jackie is having a hard time as a black man in baseball but there is hope in his words. We also see the baseball game going on, the fan's reactions in the stands and the history of black people in baseball.

The illustrations are lustrous and Jackie seems larger than life perhaps giving us a clue as to the enormity of this first of many days in the big leagues. While the illustrations totally grab you in the story flows smoothly from history to converstation to baseball. Included at the end are some real photos of Jackie, an author's note well worth reading, and suggestions for further reading. This is a wonderful book for baseball fans of all ages and belongs in everyone's library. Read as an ebook arc courtesy of Lerner Publishing Group via Netgalley and will be available March 1, 2011.

Discover how seeds travel from place to place. Our narrator excitedly tells us how she saw a pear fall from a tree in the meadow and how a cow came along and ate it. Then the seed began a journey. Where would the seed end up? Would it grow into a big tree with pears of its own?

Using the pear and cow example we can stimulate more questions about seed dispersal and, like all the books in MUMMY NATURE series, Travelling Seeds can be used as a jumping of point for discussion of other topics such as seed germination, plant parts or how plants animals and people interact in nature. On the last page we can see more examples of ways that seeds can be spread.

Travelling Seeds is a well thought out book. This is the type of book I would want my child to read in school. In fact I would recommend it to all preschool teachers to have in their classrooms. Not only can the teachers read the book to the kids but they can also plant seeds themselves...

About the Author
Once upon a time in England there was a Kiwi girl. She was unsatisfied with her job peeling onions at a factory in Norfolk and yearned for a better life where she could harness her untapped artistic potential and unleash all her pent up rhymes. One day when she realized she had no tears left to cry for the onions she packed up and moved to Spain, fell in love with a handsome Systems Administrator, had two kids, became a children's author and lived happily ever after.

YOU’RE NEVER TOO YOUNG TO START LEARNING

I received a mobi.fle [KINDLE] copy of this book through a giveaway on LibraryThing and the following is my honest opinion for the book.

Ms. Bielawski had done a marvelous with this book which is part of a series entitled “Mummy Nature Series – Nurturing Children’s Curiosity.”

As soon as children are able to talk their inquisitive minds start asking questions regarding everything they see, and this book is there to help fill this void. The language is appropriate for their young minds to understand with the rhyming making it more appealing to their ears. The illustrations [also done by the author] on each page compliments the words which go along with it allowing for the child to better visualize what they’re reading.

After reading this book a child’s mind will have a slew of other questions regarding the topic the book has been written about which might ultimately drift off to other topics, so be prepared.

For enriching a child’s education about the world around it, I’m happy to give this book 5 STARS.

Fun science for little ones

Ms. Bielawski's Traveling Seeds has once again created a colorful and fun way to teach your little ones about parts of nature. This book discusses in a fun, child-like perfection the ways a seed can travel and make new plants. I love the color and the rhythm to the books. Young children and toddlers’ will love this book.

The Mummy Nature books are part of a series that will keep a child’s interest by the rhythm and beautiful colors. I would recommend these to anyone who has little children in their families.

Gorgeous, bright illustrations and rhyming teach kids about germination

In Travelling** Seeds (**UK spelling), the third book in the Mummy Nature Series, readers will follow the precious and precocious narrator as she observes and explains the path of a pear seed, starting with the pear hanging on a tree. Readers may be surprised by what happens to the pear seed, and its likely there will be a few giggles and wrinkled noses at the mention and illustrations of poop in the process.

The rhyming format mostly works well, though sometimes it flows better than others. The vocabulary is simple, but there is some random punctuation (likely to keep the rhyme flow) and some random capitalization. There is more white space on pages than in the prior book, Bees Like Flowers, but the bright, beautiful illustrations will keep readers engaged and smiling.

As with the prior books in the series, author Rebecca Bielawksi includes a supplemental section at the end and in this book, it tells of a few other ways that seeds travel. The book will work with very young children as a read-aloud or read along, but the book may be a little text heavy in the second half for newly independent readers to read alone.
