Hurricane Survival Suspense for Middle Grades

FINDING SOMEPLACE by Denise Lewis Patrick is the gripping story of a young teen’s experiences surviving Hurricane Katrina.

Written for middle grade youth, this compelling work of historical fiction begins a few days before the hurricane as Teresa prepares for her 13th birthday. Unaware of the severity of the storm, Teresa is caught in the 9th Ward when the levee breaks. The rest of the story follows her escape, temporary move to New Jersey, and return home.

Patrick’s well-developed characters draw readers into the culture of New Orleans. Her authentic portrayal of the disaster and its aftermath are shocking realistic.

It’s been a decade since this disaster, so it’s important to revisit this event with a new generation of youth. Librarians will find the combination of disaster, suspense, and real-life popular with youth. Pair it with nonfiction works about forces of nature and other books about natural disasters.

I can only imagine what it was like in New Orleans

Thank you to Denise Lewis Patrick and Goodreads for giving me this book.
The main character is a 12 year old girl that was looking forward to her birthday. She had plans of becoming fashion designer. On her birthday however hurricane Katrina hits her city of New Orleans.
Her live changes dramatically and she has to find her way back home.
I saw the aftermath of hurricane Katrina in Alabama a few years after it hit. I can only imagine what it was like in New Orleans. This was a great way for it to become more personal.

Gives you a visceral experience of living through Hurricane Katrina

An easy read, I couldn't put it down. Characters are well developed. Paints a clear picture of New Orleans culture and what makes it different. The main character Reesie is endearing and discovers how strong she is when put in a difficult situation. Very much worth the read. You will not forget it. Even though it's written for young readers adults will enjoy this was well.

Cleverly interwoven threads of the story create side-splitting scenes as varsity hero Tommy is coached through exams by the Ridgeways' student house-keeper Dorothy, as twelve-year-old Susan artfully maneuvers two young neighbors to bed in a burst of very wise babysitting, as ten-year-old George finally gains his father's permission to park cars in their backyard on game days at twenty-five cents, as the six-year-old prodigy Dumping bewails her status until it's found that the university child study clinic had made a mistake. There are tender moments too, vigorous, uncontrived episodes and language that call a spade a spade—a surefire chronicle of a healthiest of healthy families.

About the Author

Carol Ryrie Brink (1895–1981) was an American author of more than thirty books for children and adults. She is widely known for her novel Caddie Woodlawn, which won the 1936 Newbery Medal, the award given to the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children in a given year. Carol grew up in Idaho and later attended the University of Idaho. She transferred to the University of California, where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1918. She married that same year and settled with her husband in Saint Paul, Minnesota, where they lived for more than forty years and had two children. Brink’s first novel, Anything Can Happen on the River, was published in 1934. Three of Brink’s children’s books are included in the Book Crush Rediscoveries series: Family Grandstand (1952), Family Sabbatical (1956), and The Highly Trained Dogs of Professor Petit (1953).

Nancy Pearl is a librarian and lifelong reader. She regularly comments on books on National Public Radio’s Morning Edition. Her books include 2003’s Book Lust: Recommended Reading for Every Mood, Moment, and Reason; 2005’s More Book Lust: 1,000 New Reading Recommendations for Every Mood, Moment, and Reason; 2007’s Book Crush: For Kids and Teens; Recommended Reading for Every Mood, Moment, and Interest; and 2010’s Book Lust To Go: Recommended Reading for Travelers, Vagabonds, and Dreamers. MY FIRST NOVEL

I read Grandstand Family when I was ten. I had never read a book on my own, unassigned, until then, even though I was, in fact, the best reader in my class. I fell in love with the family and learned, at the end, that novels could be "open-ended"--a lesson many deprived adults have never understood. It should be republished!

Charming Family Story

When I was a child, I read this book by well-known Caddie Woodlawn author, Carol Ryrie Brink. Since I grew up and married a professor at a mid-West university, I decided to revisit the book. It's a fun story with lots of football, midwestern culture, and a strong 1950's feel.

Any Professor-parent will enjoy sharing this with his/her children. The book is character rather than plot driven, so don't look for lots of action. A little preachy at times, the story conveys values of diligence, sacrifice, creativity, and obedience.

This book “Things That Go – Boats Edition” belongs to a Children’s book series published by Speedy Publishing. We love Speedy Publishing Children’s book series as they usually come with excellent photos and basic references that are quite suitable for the underage, for those small family members at home, for those parents who love to teach their children at home and this type of books serve well for teaching purposes at school too.

This book refers to the most common different types of boats. The boats were invented long before cars, wagons and carts. Basically, a boat is a watercraft of any size designed to float on water (lakes, rivers, seas, ponds, etc.).

Beautiful photographs with several important facts about boats, shapes, sizes, even different methods of construction are shown on this book. Among those boat types you will learn about the Dugouts which were the oldest type of boat that archeologists have found. Boat category classification as unpowered, human-powered and motorboats are depicted on this book.

Excellent publication from Speedy Publishing, good for teaching purposes at home and school.

Good read for the little ones!

Another great book from Baby Professor. I have two boys that love reading. One of their favorite things are boats, this book is perfect for teaching your children about boats. We love the realistic pictures.

Great for kids obsessed with Buses!

I would also like to add that this is not an easy reader for children though because there are a few tough words so parents will most likely have to actually read this aloud for their children. Although this book is technically recommended for children of all ages, as a teacher and a mother, I would probably recommend that this book is most suitable for approximate ages 4-8. As a mom and a teacher, this would also be a great book to have on a device in your classroom for children to be able to enjoy in a reading center.

My son loves cars, trucks, and transportation of any kind and I was super excited to get this book to read to him. Every evening my son and I curl up on the couch and enjoy a book together, and lately he has been insistent on me reading from my phone. So “Things That Go: Buses Edition” is a book that I can read to him from my phone and is just what the Dr. ordered. With that being said, thank goodness for e-books!

Best friends can do anything!

I have read a few of Christopher Crafts Minecraft books and I aways look forward to the next one my mom buys! This was a great book because it gave me an inside view of characters which I have seen while playing Minecraft. This book has a good story-line proving that no matter how different you are to someone else, that you can become friends and accomplish anything. Jon and Bernard were true heroes when they fought the wolves and rescued the pigs from being eaten! My mom doesn't really know a lot about minecraft but SHE even liked the book! Thank you!!

I am nine years old and I like this book because it was really cool to read. It’s about Minecraft and there’s a pig named Jon and a Iron Golem called Bernard in it. And Jon’s village was going to be eaten by wolves, but luckily he escaped. But he left his sister, Hazel behind. So Bernard and Jon have to try and save his sister and the village. When they fought the wolves I kinda felt bad for the wolves when they got hurt though but I was happy that Jon and Bernard survived. Tamed wolves in Minecraft are my favourite animals. I really liked the graphics in this book too and if you play Minecraft I think you will like this book just like me! (=^.^=)

Terrific story with a Minecraft theme

We enjoyed how author Christopher Craft has taken the characters from the Minecraft game and made their own story to tell. My kids liked the action and adventure along with the illustrations from the game. I liked the story of friendship, tolerance, and working together to help your friends and neighbors. The Minecraft references (inventory, the monsters, fall damage) are easy to follow for those who do not play Minecraft while connecting the game fan even more to this story. It is well written and well worth the investment for reluctant readers who are hooked by the title and cover.

When a man offered to buy him from the captain for $500 and Aldridge witnessed other, less fortunate blacks on the auction block, he became angry and afraid. At 17, he decided to sail to England, where he would be free of his country's inhumanity and his father's expectations. Working his way up from errand boy to understudy, he eventually became "one of the most celebrated Shakespearean actors in Europe." Aldridge was also a vocal abolitionist, addressing audiences and raising money for the cause. Armand brings vividly to life the emotional and artistic development of a groundbreaking actor

You might say that Ira Aldridge is having his moment --- just 200 or so years late. A recent play that made waves in London and on Broadway tells his story, and now Glenda Armand and Floyd Cooper are also telling Ira's story for younger readers in the beautiful new picture book IRA’S SHAKESPEARE DREAM.

IRA'S SHAKESPEARE DREAM tells the story of a young boy in the early 1800s who loved reading Shakespeare plays aloud in class and watching them from the balcony of a local theater. But as a free African American boy, Ira's options were limited --- he encountered discouragement at every turn when he told his teacher and his father about his dreams of becoming a Shakespearean actor.

Ira was encouraged by some English actors to accompany them to London, where, they assured him, it might be easier for him to find work as a Shakespearean actor than it would be in the United States, divided as it is between slave and free states. Although Ira's dreams were still hard won in England, he did find some Shakespearean companies willing to give him a chance, and he used his newly public role to inform English audiences about the horrors of slavery that he had witnessed firsthand.

Ira's greatest triumph was being able to play Othello, a role that previously had been played solely by white actors wearing blackface makeup. This was a role, Armand suggests, that held special resonance for Ira: "Ira did not need this makeup. And the emotions he expressed as Othello were as real as the color of his skin. Like Othello, Ira knew despair. He had seen it in the eyes of enslaved people."

Armand brings vividly to life the emotional and artistic development of a groundbreaking actor that most readers have probably never heard of. Cooper's sepia-hued oil paintings evoke the decorations that grace the interiors of majestic old theatres and give Ira's story the grandeur and beauty it deserves. Cooper effectively depicts Ira's maturation from an eager young boy to a mature and somber professional who was more than capable of portraying one of Shakespeare's great tragic heroes. A brief Afterword shows readers a photograph of the real-life Ira Aldridge and also tells them a bit more about his life.

Readers may be inspired to read more about this courageous and accomplished actor, and Armand offers several suggested sources if they should choose to do so. What's more, Ira's story may inspire readers to learn more about Shakespeare or to follow their own dreams, no matter how unlikely or far-fetched they may seem to others.

An Important Book!

I was looking for books to introduce my grandson to the life and works of Shakespeare since we are on the eve of the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death in 1616. This beautiful book not only helps to emphasize the importance of Shakespeare to American and international theater over all these years, but also tells the equally important story of the dreams of an unlikely African American young man, Ira Aldridge, to become a Shakespearean actor. Ira's strong ambition and hard work brought his dreams to fruition in England and continental Europe and he is the only African American to be honored at the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. What a marvelous example Ira's life is to anyone who cares deeply about accomplishing something important. I'm glad to be able to use this lovely book to demonstrate to my grandson that while dreams are important, so is the hard work necessary to make these dreams a reality. And thank goodness that Ms. Armand has presented another heroic African American to young and old alike and broadened our understanding of the richness of our country's history. I look forward to her next work.

This is a little-known story that Glenda portrays with feeling and depth. The artwork is gorgeous. In an age where nontraditional casting has become commonplace, it is important that actors and audiences appreciate this forerunner who made it possible. Essential for libraries with children's collections and for families who appreciate seriousness in their kids' reading.
