Chapter 6: The Secret Room

Aden followed Bliss through the secret entrance-way through a short tunnel, into what turned out to be a tiny room chocker block full with objects.

There sat two chests: a brass-clasped affair filling the width of the room, and a small one atop it. Above the chests, objects lay piled on a shelf. On the right wall a rack held a cutlass and a broadsword. A rack on the opposite wall held sections of polished armor. Piled in a wooden box on the floor beside the chests were several dozen objects which caught Aden’s attention. Magic artefact discs..

“Stone me!” He said.

All the artefacts glowed with a pale light. Aden shut his eyes, and counted to five. He opened them, and the artefacts were still there. Bliss lifted one and Aden watched his friend examine the thing.

What Bliss held resembled an athlete’s discus. About the size of her palm and fashioned of a pale milky substance, it sported a dark blue pattern on its surface. Within the milky substance of the disc lay a thin metal structure. Tiny cogs whirled in a soundless high speed blur. A brass circular button sat flush against the outside center of the disc, and a black dot marked one edge of the button. A black dot also lay on the body of the disc beside the button.

Bliss traced her finger across the disc. “An artefact disc! I’ve never seen a real one before.”

Aden had never seen one before, either. Their homeland, Haverland, owned thousands of artefacts but few people saw one. Stored deep under the Haverland palace, soldiers kept a constant watch on them. Guarded by strong vaults and even more soldiers were those few artefacts that ‘worked’. A working artefact was worth more than its weight in diamonds. What were artefacts doing here, in Dazarian, he wondered? And why weren’t they better protected?

Although I suspect this would be a great and easy read for middle grade children

Being older than middle grade, plunging for this book was a gamble, but ultimately well worth it. Although it starts slowly, I immediately grew fond of the two main characters. And as I continued reading, the ideas and plot complications gradually built. This is no simple hack job based on popular themes selling right now (Dystopian Earth, Children of Greek Gods, etc), but a unique fantasy story, set in a unique world, with a core interesting concept (magical discs).

Although I suspect this would be a great and easy read for middle grade children, beneath the surface various themes exist that will tug at the thoughts of older readers.

For anyone who wishes to partake of an other-wordly journey and set their imagination free with tales of magical artefacts, ocean voyages, ogres, dangerous desert kingdoms, 'quaint cobbled lane' homelands, good and evil, and plain old friendship - then try Azabar's Icicle.

Sean Wants to Be Messi is an inspiring, relatable story for any young sports fan. It is funny, thoughtful and a great way to open kid friendly discussions on getting frustrated, trying again, work ethic, believing in yourself and having a dream. As parents we are not perfect and I appreciate the reality of the adult characters, the conflicts we face and the fine line between encouraging and allowing a child to be who they are in the moment. Beautiful illustrations and of course the book is a double score for any Messi fan!! Buying another copy for my nephew and all the little soccer fans in our lives, the personalized version, will make for an extra special gift.

As the owner of a summer camp, I was looking for some good books to add to our SEL (Social Emotional Learning) library. I was recommended this book and we're adding it to our collection. This book is a great one to read with any primary aged child, boy or girl. You can hook them with the soccer/sports angle, but the book is a great tool to talk about tough emotions like shyness, fear, frustration and uplifting ones like confidence, kindness and love. Great for facilitating a discussion about role models and family roles as well. Highly recommend for parents or schools and organizations with readers of different levels.

If you and your kids want to enjoy a great book about soccer, Sean wants to be Messi: A fun picture book about soccer and inspiration for children ages 5-9. US edition is the ONE! It is entertaining for both child and parent as the reader follows Sean and his mother through Sean's daily love (some might say obsession) of the game of soccer. We read together as Sean struggles with math in school, and finds his redemption in the game of soccer. For those who don't know of Lionel Messi, the world-class star soccer player for Barcelona, he is not only one of the best players ever to run the field, he is also a nice guy. My eight-year-old son does not play soccer, but he is now interested after having Googled Messi's name and learning about him! He thought that Messi was a funny name at first, but he's used to it now, opening his mind up to a whole new world of cultures and societies and languages! The two of us have not only learned about soccer and math, but also about the countries where this most popular sport in the world is played.

Paper not leak proof! !

If I could give this calendar NO STARS I would! ! I am very disappointed in this calendar. I had hoped to color a month picture at a time but some pictures are so intricate that I needed to use ultra fine markers but after doing several colors I happened to look at the month before and found a total mess on the section where the days are located. Now I will have to use a marker on the dates for appointments. That would mess up the picture on the following month. For the price I can't afford to buy something I can not use. So very very sad. Wish I could include photos I took to better show what I mean.

Great pictures, fun coloring, less than durable

I loved receiving this calendar, it fit in really well with the general coloring themed Christmas my family (parents, 3 adult kids, and significant others) had this year. The designs are fun and let you express your creativity in color. I like that most of the designs were of things that could be any color, so you can really have your fun with a pack of 72 colored pencils. I would not recommend using pens or markers for fear of losing functionality as they might bleed through. As it were, with colored pencils, I kept a sheet of scratch paper behind the page I was working on so as to avoid transfer.

My only complaint is in construction. I am only halfway through the year coloring, and the pages are almost completely separated from the staples. This is probably due to my habit of folding the calendar over so I wasn't reaching over an entire extra page to get to the design. This is a perfectly natural thing to do, but it seems that the calendar was not up to the challenge of that much manipulation. With the designs being as intricate as they are, sometimes taking me multiple days to complete (looking at you, March), it is hard to imagone making it through the calendar without encountering this problem.

Fabulous! The whole family, age 5 to 45 having a blast coloring these pages in. What fun to have a wall calendar that's personalized, that becomes memorabilia after the year's end. Creative, relaxing, well thought out, nice diversity of images, and good balance of simple and more complex images. In response to person griping about paper quality and the fact that markers show through on next page, please note image clearly shows using COLORED PENCILS not markers. Paper is PERFECT. You do need a finer point, but if you have a good set of sharpened colored pencils you get a good point and great colors. Great product! We'll end up getting one of these every year now...

Great picture book for new siblings!

This is the perfect book for any new Veerji or Didi (bhanji!)! Beautiful illustrations, sweet story and a great book for a growing Sikh family! The Sikh Research Institute includes a great write-up on the Sikh Naming Ceremony. Inni Kaur is also the author of the Journey with the Gurus series which is an absolute must have for Sikh families.

Absolutely beautiful calendar and very good quality. I don't have to worry about ink seeping through to the other side when writing in important dates. There is plenty of room to write on each day, and I love that all the holidays are printed for me. My only complaint is that the calendar days for the month of December are printed on a different texture paper than the rest of the calendar; its glossy and it makes my pen smudge. Other than that I'm really happy with it.
