Book 2: Zombie Horde
After their tough battle and victory over the first Zombie Horde, the group returns home to prepare for the Dragon battle. Unaware of the danger surrounding them, our heroes are attacked late at night and their castle is destroyed in a retaliation attack from the Zombie Leader.

While the group recovers from the attack, Steve receives a message from the Priest, who sent his wolf Elly to deliver it. It’s a call for help, because a stronger horde is coming on the next full moon, along with the Zombie Leader itself.

As if defending one place was not enough, the group must also provide help to three other villages not far from the Priest’s, which are in dire need of urgent repairs and new defenses against the powerful enemies.

Check out the second part of Boris’ diary, and find out if the group will succeed in defeating the Zombie Horde and dethroning the Zombie Leader before finally proceeding to the Ender Dragon.

Book 3: Defeating the Dragon
Boris and his group defeated the Zombie Horde once again in a big battle which demanded the involvement of the entire team. They successfully expelled the Hordes from the battlefield and captured the Zombie Leader.

The Leader was purified in an ancient ritual and his true form was exposed. The Zombie Leader was in fact Kozu, the Priest Hori’s brother, who was infected by a Zombie a few years ago. Kozu tells Steve he must kill the Ender Dragon before the next full moon, otherwise the next hordes will be endless.

The dragon is said to be the main strength of the night monsters, and the one who’s responsible for spawning the Zombie Hordes.

Now, the group must hunt the Endermen to get their precious pearls, craft the Ender Eyes and search for the End Portal. Check the third and last part of Boris’ diary to see if they will achieve their task before it’s too late.

He does it again!!!This book is awesome, Steve demolishises the ender dragon and saves the village to just be helpful. Steve gets help from his wolves to destroy the zombies. He gets the priest's brother back to normal and defeats the ender dragon once and for all.

Great Book, Highly Recommended!

"Fur, Fins, and Feathers" is everything I want in a picture book. Clear and bright illustrations accompany text that gives a biography of Abraham Dee Bartlett, superintendent of the London Zoo for thirty-eight years in the 1800s. This book has the right amount of sentences and information per page*, and the words are laid out in a flowing, readable way that shows good use of space and respect for the pictures. I loved the timeline at the end of the book. Not only did it show the main events of Mr. Bartlett’s life, it also listed other important events of the day, enabling me to put Abraham Dee Bartlett’s accomplishments into perspective with the times.

Perhaps one of the most important aspects of Fur, Fins, and Feathers is that it tells a truthful story while subtly presenting readers with the message that nature and wild animals should be protected. I am very glad to say that this is accomplished without ever using fear or shock tactics.**

If I were on the Caldecott review committee, I would say, “Hey, everyone, how about "Fur, Fins, and Feathers"?

*I find picture book word-on-page count to be very important! A good informational picture book should have enough sentences that the story can really be told (not condensed down to window-dressing), yet not so many sentences that the reader gets fidgety trying to wade through them and get to the next page and picture.

**I have been frustrated in recent years by media’s response to nature in crisis. It seems to me that graphically telling children how bad their elders have been to animals in the past is not at all an effective way to inspire them to mature into people who choose to protect our world. Overwhelmingly sad or shocking words just depress readers and make them tune out. This book did not sugar-coat the past, but it focused on a story of how one positive-acting man motivates many people to view nature in a healthier way.

I received a free early-reviewer copy of "Fur, Fins, and Feathers" with the understanding that I would write an honest review of the book. I am pleased to post these wholeheartedly enthusiastic words.

Very rich in history, information about the crusade for good animal care, and unbelievable illustrations!

SUMMARY: This is the story of Abraham Dee Bartlettt who became the superintendent of the London Zoo in the late 1800s and worked ceaselessly to better the lives of the animals. Growing up, he learned everything he could about animals and their needs. Once he was in charge of the zoo, he worked with the animals in a gentle manner and found ways to make them healthier as well as to live in better comfort, including bringing them out of cages into natural habitats.

ILLUSTRATIONS: The illustrations were created in paper collage and mixed media. They are unbelievably detailed and intricate. I could look at them over and over again for pure enjoyment.

REVIEW: This was a wonderful biography/history story. The paragraphs were kept short and simple, but still rich with information. There were plenty of informative illustrations to keep all ages interested. This book would be a lovely springboard book for teachers to use in the classroom when studying animals or this time in history (late 1870s).

AGE RECOMMENDATION: Grades 1-5. There is something for each age group in this book

An interesting and inspiring story of a little known man

Summary: When Abraham Dee Bartlett was growing up in the early 1800’s, there were no zoos. The closest thing was menageries where animals were kept in small cages for people to come and see. Abraham loved animals and read all that he could about them as a boy and a young man. His vast knowledge of wild animals eventually caught the attention of the London Zoological Society, and he was appointed superintendent of the new London Zoo. During his 38-year tenure there, he revolutionized the care of wild animals. He built larger enclosures for animals, learned how to feed them a healthy diet, and made labels so visitors could learn more about what they were seeing. By empathizing with the wild animals in his charge, he learned to keep them healthy and happy, and developed animal care methods that are used by zoos and veterinarians today. A timeline, author’s note, and brief bibliography are included. Grades 1-4.

Pros: Not only is this an interesting and inspiring story of a little-known man, but the cut paper collage illustrations are gorgeous. Readers will want to take their time with this book, enjoying both the text and the richly detailed pictures.

Cons: The final Doctor Dolittle-like illustration of Abraham surrounded by smiling animals is probably not entirely realistic.

Healthy and Scrumptious Recipes

I was so excited when I saw that A Couple Cooks produced a daily calendar for 2016. Having 365 of their healthy and scrumptious recipes in a calendar is fantastic! As always, their photographs are beautiful, and the recipes are easy to follow. Our plan is to try out these recipes and keep the calendar, long after 2016.... I highly recommend you try these recipes - you will not be disappointed.

I got this because I had TF publishing's recipe calendar last year. Not every recipe was a knock-out, but I got a lot of cool ideas. I'm also on Weightwatchers, so I wanted a similar calendar with more healthy recipes. I think this A Couple Cooks calendar is very creative, but I would call it more "wholesome" or "clean-eating" than healthy. For example, honey and dates are common sugar substitutes for dessert recipes, but ultimately the point/caloric values are still high. On the other side, I got recipes for salads, sandwiches, and dressed crackers, so light but not really interesting. Obviously I'm only in March, so there are hopefully many great recipes ahead, but i haven't been inclined to make one yet, and I made quite a few from last year's. I will say this calendar is gorgeous. Big color photos definitely draw the eye better than the plain text from 2015. This calendar also gives food tips on the weekends, which I find less useful than additional recipes. All in all, it's not exactly what I wanted, but it gives me a whole bunch of new recipes to think about. If I try one soon and it's awesome, I'll revise this, too.

Uninteresting, Uninventive, Uninspiring.

The recipes in this calendar are very basic. As someone who's an adventurous cook, always looking for something new, interesting and flavorful, this calendar lacks ambition. As I'm writing this, today's recipe is Roasted Cauliflower. Can you guess how to roast cauliflower without looking at a recipe? I sure can. Does this recipe give me any new ideas? Um. Add garlic and lemon juice instead of the usual oil, salt and pepper. Thanks guys. I already do that to my asparagus.

I purchased this wanting it to give me new ideas each day, to shake up our dinner routine. I've ended up throwing 75% of them away, keeping the most innovative, like Frozen Mint Chocolate Tarts made with coconut milk and Medjool dates. Sounds awesome! If only the other 75% were just as awesome. I gave it two stars for the 25% I keep.

Maybe I need to come out with a Daily Dinner Calendar, since it seems no one else has. Hey "Food Fest 365", why don't YOU have a desk calendar yet? I love your book, could use a daily reminder of your awesomeness... Just Sayin'.

It's been a while since I've devoured a book as sweet and sticky as Dear Opl. Shelley Sackier's breakout novel is charming and sophisticated, written to be both entertaining and educational.

Opal is thirteen years old, and life simply isn't going well for her. Her father has passed away from cancer, her younger brother is dressing up in girls clothing, and her mother is simply... absent. With nothing but sugar to offer sweetness in her life, Opal fills the holes in her heart with Hershey's, bonbons, and bright jellybeans. Of course, gorging herself on sweets isn't without its consequences: Opal has gained some weight – a lot of weight, actually – and now, the only thing people seem to see when they look at her is her double chins.

I found this book an absolute pleasure. Opal is a witty, flawed main character with plenty of depth. I felt the narrative was genuine, without contrived reactions or conflicts meant to up the stakes artificially (minus one of the events at the end of the book, which felt a bit underplayed, but I think for the audience this book is meant for, it won't be an issue). I loved G-Pa, and Ollie, and Opal's friend, Summer. The book takes real issues, offers its readers opportunities to think about obesity, and the solutions to that... but most of all, its undercurrent of not being fearful of change is what makes Dear Opl a real gem. My only gripes are really not applicable to a book for this age group, but they include a feeling that some character arcs were somewhat rushed to completion, and that I would have liked to have had a lot more time with each of the different elements of the book. To that end, the book is left rather open, so maybe we'll have a chance to see Opal and her friends in another book soon!

I'd recommend this book to any middle grade or young adult reader looking for a book with lots of laughs, and not laden with romance. And, if you're not satisfied with only the humor inside the book, I suggest checking out peakperspective.com, the blog home of Shelley Sackier.

nice mix of issues presented in a way that is engaging and not preachy, with messages that will linger long after the last page

Opal is 13, with several challenges in her life: her father ‘went away’ two years ago, she can’t wear skinny jeans, her brother is forever dressing up in women’s clothes and her grandfather has moved in, making a crowded space even more so. Add to that, Opal’s favorite snack, chocolate, may just be the next forbidden item as she just got back from the doctor’s office with a warning about being pre-diabetic, and a list of foods and changes she needs to make. Life just isn’t fair.

Deeper in, we see Opal dealing with the struggles of making healthy choices and her retreat to emotional eating to stuff down her grief. For her father isn’t ‘away’, he died, and she’s at a loss of how to grieve. While her mother shows some wonderful characteristics: supportive as to food choices available in the house, benignly allowing her brother to express himself in less than traditional ways, suggesting that Opal use a blog to get her feelings out and sort through them, her mother’s fear for her daughter is shown in words and comments that are harsh and sharp, snarky moments that shame Opal, even though it is very clear that her intentions are to help.

Dear Opl is born, and Opal finds a small following with people who are looking to her for advice and help, even as her best friend and she have some serious issues. Struggling with change, growing up, learning to make choices that are healthy and even recognizing the underlying issues behind her own emotional eating choices are highlights of this story. Solidly presenting the issues from Opal’s perspective, and seeing the changes in her behavior and personality as the changes she needs to make become choices for her healthier and happier life, rather than a punishment.

A nice mix of issues presented in a way that is engaging and not preachy, with messages that will linger long after the last page is read.

Cute Teen Story

I enjoyed reading this easy, light story of eighth-grader Opal. Her father died two years previously and she struggles with her weight and looks. Sweets are her comfort food which greatly concerns her mother. When Opal visits her doctor she finds she is pre-diabetic. Now she has to follow a strict diet and start yoga classes. Opl and her G-pa spend time together trying out new recipes.

Opl decides that since her mother wants her to literally take up less space she decides to shorten her name by 25%, thus becoming Opl. When her mother suggests she start a blog “Opl” becomes her pen name. Her blog becomes a big hit with lots of followers.

Young Opl is delightfully funny. Her description of the members of her yoga class are totally typical of a teen. There’s Mr. Stretchy who makes loud breathing noises as he stretches. Fishbowl wears glasses that look like goggles and enlarge her eyes so she looks like someone staring through a fish tank.

Her little brother Ollie is another delightful character as is Rudy, the “soup kitchen guy”.

This book is probably most appropriate for middle school readers. Opal has a lot of heart and her mother learns that Opal has things to teach her.

March Grand Prix is colorful and exciting!

A manga, colorful, and exciting trilogy where March is the eldest of four children and the only boy. He loves racing and does so every chance he gets, even when it comes to helping his sister out to deliver 200 apple tarts to Mayor Winters!

Geared towards 7-10 year old readers, my six year old absolutely loved it. Many words, he still is unsure of, so he requested that I read it to him. Normally, I do not care for manga-type books, but since I had it downloaded already, I decided to attempt the first book, Fast and the Furriest, which turned out to be much easier of a read than I first thought. It turns out, we both enjoyed reading the stories!

The illustrations are attractive, colorful, and full of action. The dialogue between characters is active and engaging. Throughout the trilogy, it held my six year old’s attention throughout and the illustrations guided him to place images to the words. Fantastically put together, I give March Grand Prix 5 stars!

Fast and the Furriest

In this first story of March Grand Prix, March is frustrated with his “so uncool” family, especially his sisters who keep fighting and his mother who keeps smothering him. After dropping him off at the racetrack, March checks on his friend Hammond, who is working on March’s race car for a race. Hammond knows everything there is to know about a race car. March eyes up his competition, Lemieux, Clarkson, Alfredo, and Lyca. Each of the competition has something quicker, stronger, and better in their own vehicles than what March has.

MarchGrandPrix - Fast and the Furriest

In a practice run, Lyca manages to sabotage March’s vehicle. Lucky for March, Hammond can fix the vehicle, using parts from March’s “uncool” family’s vehicle. Once the race car is fixed and running, can March beat his competition in the race?

The Baker’s Run

March’s sister April is an entrepreneur who is opening her own bakery. In her grand opening, their Mayor Winters orders 200 apple tarts for his grandson’s birthday. Not only does Hammond find the tarts absolutely delicious, but he’s stuck in the back of April’s delivery van with 200 tarts. And the delivery van runs much slower than March expected, resulting in March losing his mind in it’s extremely low pace.

MarchGrandPrix - Bakers Run

Needless to say, March begins driving a bit reckless and tarts go flying all over the back of the van. At least whatever Hammond hadn’t eaten yet! Will March, Hammond, and April get the tarts to Mayor Winters? How will Mayor Winters feel about some tarts missing or flipped upside-down?

The Grand Desert Rally

This last story in March Grand Prix is about another race. The racers and their mechanics take a boat to an island where the race is located. After learning all he wonderful new upgrades to his vehicle, March learns that he needs a co-driver, a navigator. When no sense of direction mechanic, Hammond, is his navigator, March quickly learns that they are going in a different direction from the racing pack because Hammond is reading he map upside-down!

MarchGrandPrix - Great Desert Ralley

When March and Hammond are decidedly lost and unsure of the direction of the race, they find other racers, who point them in the right direction. Hammond insists March stop to help the others from being stuck in deep sand or rocky terrain. In exchange a driver hands March and Hammond handkerchiefs for protection against the sandstorm up ahead.

While stopping to help everyone else, Lyca is racing up front with March’s sister, May, as her co-driver. Obviously upset with his sister for helping the competition, March continues on as quickly as he can. Can March and Hammond win the race even after helping everyone else?
