With a title like "The Game of Balls" how could I possibly not ...
By Kelley C
Let's be frank here, we all know why I chose this book. With a title like "The Game of Balls" how could I possibly not be interested? So I was whisked off on an eighteen page adventure to discover ball games from all over the world.

This book is the same in format as many of the other Speedy Publishing books sold by Baby Professor that I have reviewed in the past. As usual the strength in this book lies in it's strong visuals and appealing photographs. The areas that are lacking are the overall writing as well as the format of the book overall.

The Game of Balls: Ball Games All Over the World gives the reader a brief explanation of several ball games enjoyed, you guessed it, all over the world. Some of the games covered in this book are basketball, golf, polo, bowling, and volleyball. Also featured is petanques, which is a game I had never heard of up until this point.

If you want a brief overview of a variety of sports than this book is the one for you.

I received this book at a discount in exchange for an honest review.

Fun to look at the pictures and learn about new sports
By April Wiltbank
I got this book for my son, who loves sports. He loved looking at the pictures and having me read about the different sports. Admittedly there were several of the sports he was uninterested in, but then for me I learned a few things I didn't know about sports played all over the world.
This is a really neat book to have on kindle to be able to pull out and show my son when we are waiting at a doctors appointment or when he is bored. It isn't something he can read for himself, obviously, but I read it to him and we count the people and talk about what they are doing.

My general feeling is that this is a basic book, really geared for small kids. It is probably on about a Second to Third grade reading level but the way the book is put together it seems like it is more for smaller kids. Still, it is a good book to read with your little boys or girls who are interested in sports. I have a few of them who seem to be obsessed with sports and can't get enough, so finding books we can read about it is great for me.

One thing I thought was cute was in the US we obviously use the word "soccer" but it is known as "football" everywhere else. They make the distinction in the book as American Football and shows soccer as football. My 4 year old wanted to argue with me over that one, so it would be nice if they had included an explaination that we Americans call it "soccer" so I wasn't dealing with a four year old tantrum, but other than that, it was a fun read for us. I just have to remember when we get to that part again, that I need to just refer to it as "soccer" (Those four year olds can be very stubborn).

I did receive the book for free in exchange for my unbiased review. I'm not sure I would pay much for the book if I were to buy it but we really liked the kindle version.

Well-intentioned trouble maker Araminta Spookie has been “helpful” one too many times, so her family decides to send her to boarding school. On arrival, Araminta is surprised to discover that Gargoyle Hall makes her haunted home seem positively cozy. Strange moans and clanks echo down the halls and the two class leaders are equally creepy. Most of the other students have been scared away, but Araminta is determined to find out what-or who-is menacing the school.

Complete with blank-and-white interior illustrations, this brand-new story is perfect for fans of Maryrose Wood and Jacqueline West.

From School Library Journal
Gr 3–6—The latest installment in the series. Araminta, self-proclaimed investigator, and her sidekick Wanda Wizzard are suddenly confronted with Araminta being sent to boarding school for girls. She can't seem to find any reason why her family would wish to send her away. Her Uncle Drac has been acting very strange indeed and her Great Aunt Emilene is suddenly hanging around for long periods of time. Even her ghost friends Fang, Sir Horace, and Edmund can't give her any insight as to why she must live elsewhere. When Araminta arrives at her new home, she finds that the school is in danger of closing down due to low enrollment. Something very strange is going on and Araminta believes that some of the students may have something to do with it. Then the head mistress goes missing. Can Araminta save her and save the school from closing down? Araminta is a charming character who will engage and captivate readers. Half-page and full-page illustrations add appeal and help further develop the characters. VERDICT This lively and mysterious novel will hold the attention of students with a passion for mystery, without being too scary for younger readers.—Katy Charles, Virgil Elementary School, Cortland, NY

Gargoyle Hall
By BabyMo
I was not familiar with Angie Sage’s Araminta Spookie series when I received the opportunity to review Gargoyle Hall, but now that I have done so, I will be picking up the rest of Araminta’s adventures!

Araminta Spookie is a young girl who lives in a big house with her family and her friend’s family. They are an eclectic bunch, like the Munsters or the Addams family. Araminta always has good intentions, but she is also rather “spirited” and her good intentions don’t always yield good results.

In Gargoyle Hall, Araminta is sent off to boarding school. This frustrates her, because she was in the middle of solving two very important mysteries. As soon as Araminta arrives at Gargoyle Hall, she finds herself in the middle of an even bigger mystery. The students have been frightened away by a monster, so it is up to our intrepid detective to figure out where the monster came from and why it is causing such a ruckus.

This was a very funny book. Sometimes children’s humor relies too heavily on insults and misfortune, but Angie Sage demonstrates that wry humor can be just as funny. Sage’s Araminta is just delightful, and reminds me of Clementine and Ramona. Araminta is clever, and she is a loyal friend. She embodies so many positive qualities, and although she is opinionated, she is not outright rude.

I would absolutely recommend Gargoyle Hall. It manages to be scary in a fun and campy way, without being truly terrifying. This book is perfect for children in the early years of elementary school. My oldest daughter just finished second grade, and she also enjoyed reading Gargoyle Hall. We will definitely be going to the library to look for more Araminta Spookie books!

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

A Great Adventure Series for Reluctant Readers
By Grateful Grandma
Gargoyle Hall: An Araminta Spookie Adventure by Angie Sage is a children's chapter book t. It is the sixth in the series as after finishing it, I will definitely be looking for the rest for the family and school library.

Araminta Spookie is a unique girl with a very special family. Uncle Drac keeps bats, there are three ghosts in the house, a knight, his page and his dog, two other aunts, her best friend and partner in the detective agency Wanda and her parents. Unfortunately, Araminta seems to be always getting in trouble, but it is not usually her fault. When a great aunt comes to visit it is decided that Araminta has had problems one too many times, so her family decides to send her to boarding school. On arrival, Araminta is surprised to discover that her best friend has stowed away in her trunk. She also meets up with the only other two students, sisters that she calls the Vultures. Strange noises echo down the halls at night and when Araminta and Wanda get up in the morning, they discover that Ms. Gargoyle is indisposed for the day. They get locked in the basement, but with the help of Araminta's cousin, and the ghosts from home, they find out who is causing the problems in the school and what has scared away the rest of the students.

The writing is accessible to reluctant readers and avid readers alike and has a good mix of humour and spookiness to keep everyone entertained. Araminta is a strong willed, and slightly odd, young lady with good intentions. She is always trying to be helpful, but the majority of the time her 'help' causes more difficulty and chaos than expected. The series is illustrated by Jimmy Pickering with black and white artwork that adds to the story just enough to keep you entertained. The story has enough adventure to entertain reluctant readers that need high action books to hold their interest and for those that love a touch of the spooky.

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Gargoyles!
By Ionia Froment
In usual Araminta Spookie style, this book is full of silly laughs and an entertaining story that children and parents are sure to like. I've enjoyed watching the progression of these stories since the first one, and look forward to see what is going to happen in the future.

Hoping for more books.

I thought this one had a bit slower start than some of the others, but the antics soon caught up, making the kids smile and holding their attention. I love books that can make kids curious about what is going to happen next.

If you haven't checked out this series yet, you should, especially if you have little ones in your life.

Another fun book, another recommendation.

This review is based on a complementary copy from the publisher and provided through Netgalley. All opinions are my own.

Font choice also more adorable than readable
By LeniA
Illegible. didn't see the calendar part, just the graphics (lovely) when I decided to buy this calendar. Lesson learned. Black on dark blue for the word January on the background color is an example of insufficient contrast throughout. Font choice also more adorable than readable: too thin and quirky to be read from a few feet. Why does such a successful designer neglect basic tenets of design? I decided to return it when I found myself resigned to using it as overpriced wrapping paper.

A nice calendar for work
By RAS
A nice calendar for work. Unique designs. I love that some of the designs show up on the bottom half, where the dates are--makes it a little special. Note that some of the calendar pages are darkly colored, such that black ink doesn't show up well. You may want to buy some white gelly roll pens for writing on those pages, which I have found works well.

Great art
By Ecolier Assassin
Designer Lotta Jansdotter makes simple patterns to decorate every month: not only adding a picture but designing the whole page, including the list of days. The result are 12 totally different designes that vary in colors, textures and figures, all with the common touch of the simple handmade-like design pattents that remind of Finnish/Scandinavian art. A nice touch for decorating your home, i would suggest it for the bedroom.

Yard War, by Taylor Kitchings

“Taylor Kitching’s rousing debut puts you right on the fifty-yard line of a vital historical moment.” —Chris Grabenstein, New York Times bestselling author of Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library

Perfect for readers of Christopher Paul Curtis’s Bud, Not Buddy and Vince Vawter’s Paperboy, Yard War explores race relations during the Civil Rights Movement from the perspective of a boy who accidentally sets off a “yard war” when he invites his maid’s son to play football on his front lawn.

Trip Westbrook has spent his first twelve years far from the struggle for civil rights going on in Mississippi. The one black person he knows well is Willie Jane, the family maid, who has been a second mother to him. When Trip invites her son, Dee, to play football in the yard, he discovers the ugly side of his smiling neighbors. Trip’s old pals stop coming by. He is bullied, his house is defaced, and his family is threatened. The Westbrooks will be forced to choose between doing the right thing or losing the only home Trip has ever known. Who knew that playing football in the yard could have such consequences? This engaging, honest, and hopeful novel is full of memorable characters, and brings the civil rights–era South alive for young readers.

“Trip is a fine character. 1964 Mississippi leaps to life in this book.” —Gennifer Choldenko, Newbery Honor winning author of Al Capone Does My Shirts

“A captivating story about standing up for your friends. I loved seeing Trip learn how hard it can be to do the right thing.” —Kristin Levine, author of The Lions of Little Rock and The Paper Cowboy

“Trip’s journey is a sensitive account about how one person can slowly make a difference.” —Booklist

“A challenging but worthwhile portrait of a very difficult period in American history.” —SLJ

From School Library Journal
Gr 4–6—It's the fall of 1964, just after the passage of the Civil Rights Act. Trip Westbrook lives with his parents in Jackson, MI. They have a black maid, Willie Jane, who serves as a sort of second mother to Trip and his sisters. When Trip invites Willie Jane's son, Dee, to join in for a game of football in the front yard, he unwittingly sets off a chain reaction of bigotry and harassment. But it's when he tries to bring Dee to lunch at the all-white country club that the tightly knit community turns inside out. This is an unusual book. There is a solid coming-of-age story and there is some football, though the cover design may throw off some readers: students who come looking for typical sports fiction might be disappointed. While a pick-up game is the occasion for the events that drive the plot, the sport itself is a small fraction of the story. At times the action is intense. True to usage at the time, Kitchings's narrator refers to African Americans as "colored" and "Negroes." The use of a more offensive epithet is limited, but does occur repeatedly. The scenes in which Trip is persecuted by the ignorant Bethune brothers (and their hateful father) are compelling and cringe-inducing. Nonetheless, the racist violence, verbal and physical, is historically significant and amount to a stinging indictment of the hypocrisies of the culture. VERDICT This is a challenging but worthwhile portrait of a very difficult period in American history.—Bob Hassett, Luther Jackson Middle School, Falls Church, VA

About the Author
Taylor Kitchings’ roots in Mississippi run many generations deep, though it took him a while to circle back to them. As a college freshman, he recorded the original album Clean Break, now considered a collector’s item. As a junior, he wrote music for mallet and giant Möbius strip, performed at Manhattan’s Café La MaMa. In the years between his BA from Rhodes College and MA from Ole Miss, he traveled from Memphis to New York to Europe, writing and performing songs on piano.  He and his wife Beth have two children and live in Ridgeland, Mississippi, where he teaches English at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School.  His short story “Mr. Pinky Gone Fishing” was published in the collection Tight Lines from Yale University Press. Yard War is his first novel.

A compelling, important story.
By J.Prather
This book is probably one of the best historical coming of age tales I have ever read. The author does a magnificent job of capturing the period, and gives his young narrator a voice that is authentic and compelling from page one. When I requested this book I had no idea what it was about. I was expecting just a common story of school conflict. What I discovered was a surprisingly effective examination of one boy's experience in the South as the country was trying to enact the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Yard War is a powerful story that will resonate with and educate young readers unfamiliar with the period. The language will likely startle and offend readers, as the characters use racial slurs that were common during this period. Their inclusion is not gratuitous and only adds to the authenticity of the story. The author perfectly captures Trip's feelings as he grows more aware of the world around him and makes that ever important discovery that adults don't have all the answers and that sometimes their answers are wrong.

With characters that are well developed, dialogue filled with energy, and a huge amount of heart, this story of A Yard War brings a very important part of history to life for children in grades 5 to 8. It's hard to believe that this is the author's first novel. I will be eager to see what he offers up next. This is one you shouldn't miss.

For the Target Audience, Excellent Perspective on History and Race Relations Following the Civil Rights Act of 1964 ...
By delicateflower152
For the target audience – readers age 8-12 years of age - “Yard War” provides a very relatable perspective on history and on race relations following the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Taylor Kitchings understands readers in the target audience and writes with knowledge of the subject matter and the attitudes that were prevalent in the Deep South during the mid-1960’s.

A seventh grader, Trip Westbrook lives in Jackson, Mississippi. The son of a doctor, his only personal contact with “…colored people …” is with “…Willie Jane…Meemaw’s maid or a waiter at the club or a guy at the Texaco…” Naïve about race relations and the attitudes of others, Trip thinks of Willie Jane not as working for the family, but as “…my other mama…” He believes that if someone were to visit his neighborhood, his school, or his church, they would find nice people not people “…trying to hurt colored people…” When Trip invites Willie Jane’s son Dee to play football with him, Trip’s friends at first resist but because of his skill, eventually accept Dee. As Trip and Dee develop a deeper friendship, the conflict with Trip’s grandparents and the threats toward the Westbrook family intensify. Circumstances result in their taking a firm stand against racism.

Using the first person narrative in “Yard War”, Taylor Kitchings creates a very personal and very compelling story. Trip is maturing and beginning to have more his own opinions about what is right and what is wrong. Yet, Trip retains some of the naiveté – he believes his Pawpa when he is told that if he found a good “colored person” he would take him to lunch at the Country Club. When Trip takes Dee to the Club, he is surprised that Pawpa does not mean what he said.

“Yard War” is an excellent story and one that teaches some of the history of race relations to the target audience. It depicts generational conflicts realistically and the personal sacrifices that resulted for many affected individuals. The hypocrisy of church-going individuals, including his grandparents, who taught children “…Jesus loves all the children of the world. Red and yellow, black and white …” troubles Trip. Trip’s mother represents those individuals whose dilemma is that they are caught between respecting their parents and doing what they know is right. His father, whose background is not one of privilege, wants to protect his family. Dr. Westbrook must decide between whether to do so at the cost of compromising his personal beliefs and integrity or whether to take a stand against injustice and prejudice.

Language, racial references, and attitudes portrayed through “Yard War” are realistic. While the terms used in the novel are not used today, they were common at the time the novel takes place. “Yard War” provides an excellent opportunity for parents to discuss with their children the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the changes in attitude that have taken place and the changes that have yet to be effected.

great story
By Kerry O. Burns
I got this for my son. My son is black and is being raised by white parents so I thought this wonderful story would help him understand the legacy of racism in America just a bit but the evening news these days seems to also accomplish that task. We've had some wonderful discussions about race as he gets through this story. Taylor Kitchings has written a wonderful story.

Golf Romeo Echo Alpha Tango
By tvtv3
ALPHA is an alphabet book that presents each of the letters of the alphabet according to the NATO phonetic alphabet, e.g. alpha (a), bravo (b), charlie (c), etc. Each word is accompanied by an illustration of that word on the opposite page. At the end of the book there is a short explanation of what the NATO phonetic alphabet is and why it is used and who uses it. As an alphabet book, I really like this book because it presents different words for each letter of the alphabet that are very non-traditional to most alphabet books. In addition, as I child I would have enjoyed this book because it would have helped me understand what people were talking about when I heard them use terms such as "victor" "India" and "papa" in movies and tv. I'm not sure how the illustrations were made, but I like the style. Overall, ALPHA is a great little alphabet book that helps educate on several different levels. Highly recommended.

Aoife Finley is bursting at the seams with creativity. No one daydreams better than her and her imagination knows no bounds.

Mr. Peterson is old, his best days long behind him. He yearns for the past, mistrusts the present, and fears the future. But he's just figured out how to recapture his past:

By stealing other people's imaginations.

Armed with only her creativity, imaginary friends, and a few bickering classmates, Aoife embarks on an amazing, but dangerous journey into the otherworld that she created, a place that is slipping more and more out of her control and into Mr. Peterson’s, before the real world as she knows it—and as it could be—disappears forever.

OtherWorld is a YA fantasy adventure about the power of the imagination and how anything is possible. It is 80,000 words long and Evan Ronan’s first (but hopefully not last) YA novel.

This would be an incredible TV show
By John Cardy
4 stars, I battled myself with the idea of giving the book 3 stars. However the idea and world and even the over all story really did deserve the 4 stars. I love the idea of imagination and what we can do in our own heads.

This would be an incredible TV show, I went back and fourth at times with the idea of it being a feature length film but that might not work as well as a cartoon series. The idea of a talking recycling can in a non animated feature might come off a bit too odd, however with it being a cartoon I think Al could work out perfectly and kids would love him and his loyalty to our main character.

The book goes back and fourth between the real world and the world our hero created, slowly things slip into the otherworld. That idea alone is a solid one, now add in dragons, dinosaurs and giant rodents. It just screams adventure for everyone.

The building of characters is well done. We have the tough kid, the geeky kid, the preppy girl, who all come into their own as the story unfolds. Add the human characters to the mix of creative characters like a sled and a BBQ along with other creatures and things. Again screams perfect for an animated series.

My issues with the book are very few, one of the biggest was towards the ending with the adults talking in the otherworld. I get the idea of our hero needing to speak up and get her words right(which brings me to another topic of her speech problems) but something just didnt click with me. It did bring something from the start of the book towards the end so it came together but it did seem to drop the excitement after some awesome moments.

It has some very exciting moments with dragons and falling skyscrapers, it has some moments that can be taken very dark as well as have moments that remind you that these are kids and that this book is perfectly written for both Adults and kids alike.

I love that our hero has an issue with her speech, it shows up in a few places but I do wish it could have come into play a few more times, but over all well handled.

The good out weights the bad however and I do recommend giving this imaginative adventure a try. Plus I would love to see it as an animated series down the line!

Emotionally moving fantasy will remind you of 80s movies
By Joe Crowe
This is a fantasy story that reminds me of 80s movies. The star of the book is a kid who discovers her imaginary fantasy world is real, and a bad guy is making her lose control of it, because he steals imaginations. Naturally, that doesn’t sit well with the kid, so she, her imaginary friends and her classmates take him on.

Outside of the fantasy and adventure, the emotional guts of this thing are absolutely compelling and heart-wrenching. I don’t mean in a tear-jerking way. It’s emotionally moving and real.

YA stories often contain an impressive amount of trauma and misery. But this one; my goodness. I’m very impressed by this whole thing, but in a way I never want to read it again.

I have a daughter, and I need to stop chopping onions while I read. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. (Review by Joe Crowe at http://www.RevolutionSF.com, http://www.twitter.com/yojoecrowe, http://www.twitter.com/RevolutionSF)

Highly Recommended. Great Story. Excellent Writing.
By J Bryden Lloyd
Book Review: Otherworld
by Evan Ronan
Reviewed by J Bryden Lloyd

Note: I was gifted a copy of this work for an honest read and review. The following review, as with all reviews, is my personal opinion of the submitted text.

Writing Style – 4.0/5.0 (Very Good)
A really nice read. Well balanced and with a great mix of emotions and strengths in the characterisations.
Perhaps everything moved a little quick for my liking, but my daughter also had a read of this and it seemed to suit her well.

Sentence structure, chapter structure and dialogue are very good throughout, with all the breaks in the right places and creating a good, fairly consistent flow to the work.

Character Development – 4.5/5.0 (Excellent)
I don’t think there was a character in here (real or imaginary) whom I didn’t like in some way. Each had several weaknesses and a number of burgeoning strengths to build upon, and each seemed to deliver very nicely.
Aoife’s speech impediment was a very different character trait, which became a far lesser obstacle as the character seemed to outgrow the stigma of it.

There were, perhaps, a few tricks missed in the journey across Paxsum, but to be honest, the author drew on his characters very well. Further complications or awkward confrontations may have undermined a lot of the good work.

Descriptive – 5.0/5.0 (Outstanding)
In simple terms, this was a quite beautiful example of YA Fantasy Fiction. Places and events are both detailed and vividly presented to the reader, allowing a whole, marvellously visualised dimension to surround you.
Everything works to provide the reader with an almost unending onslaught of carefully created descriptive, which gives an almost flawless sense of being involved in the story.

The dialogue contributes brilliantly to the descriptive; a true testament to the strength of the writing.

Language & Grammar – 4.5/5.0 (Excellent)
As I often do, I found a handful of things that I would have considered doing differently… more personal preference than incorrect.
Beyond that, I found the standard of editing to be excellent and the word selection and usage to be equally strong.

Punctuation was excellent. Perhaps the odd extra comma here and there, but nothing to detract from the read.
Excellent example for this genre.

Plot – 4.0/5.0 (Very Good) – VERY MINOR SPOILERS
I did find myself asking whether the character group should perhaps be a little older, but the plot really didn’t demand anything specifically beyond these children in the real world. Having said that, I felt a little disappointed that Aoife identified the bad guy very quickly, but then failed to link him to the Boy President character following his visit.

Other than this, I found this to be a truly imaginative and original plot, with some nice sub-plots which kept the cast on their toes.

The underlying work of building and repairing the bridges between this group of children, is expertly done. As a father myself, my understanding of the fickle nature of childhood friendship is very good, and this author deals with both the creation of new friendships and the rebuilding of a long-broken one, brilliantly.

General – 4.0/5.0 (Very Good)
The cover is outstanding, but I feel compelled to state my disappointment that the blurb for the book gives away so much of the story. It leaves little ‘detective work’ for the reader, thereby removing a small level of accomplishment which children would thrive on, in an otherwise exceptional reading experience.
This could have been a far longer book, but I really think Ronan has nailed the ‘less is more’ adage with this.

A solid 4 Stars, and highly recommended.

THE BOOK OF BEASTS

He happened to be building a palace when the news came, and he left all the bricks kicking about the floor for Nurse to clear up--but then the news was rather remarkable news. You see, there was a knock at the front door and voices talking downstairs, and Lionel thought it was the man come to see about the gas which had not been allowed to be lighted since the day when Lionel made a swing by tying his skipping-rope to the gas-bracket.

And then, quite suddenly, Nurse came in, and said, "Master Lionel, dear, they've come to fetch you to go and be King."

Then she made haste to change his smock and to wash his face and hands and brush his hair, and all the time she was doing it Lionel kept wriggling and fidgeting and saying, "Oh, don't, Nurse," and, "I'm sure my ears are quite clean," or, "Never mind my hair, it's all right," and "That'll do."

"You're going on as if you was going to be an eel instead of a King," said Nurse.

The moment Nurse let go for a moment Lionel bolted off without waiting for his clean handkerchief, and in the drawing-room there were two very grave-looking gentlemen in red robes with fur, and gold coronets with velvet sticking up out of the middle like the cream in the very expensive jam tarts.

They bowed low to Lionel, and the gravest one said:

"Sire, your great-great-great-great-great-grandfather, the King of this country, is dead, and now you have got to come and be King."

"Yes, please, sir," said Lionel; "when does it begin?"

"You will be crowned this afternoon," said the grave _gentleman who was not quite so grave-looking as the other.

"Would you like me to bring Nurse, or what time would you like me to be fetched, and hadn't I better put on my velvet suit with the lace collar?" said Lionel, who had often been out to tea.

"Your Nurse will be removed to the palace later. No, never mind about changing your suit; the royal robes will cover all that up."

The grave gentlemen led the way to a coach with eight white horses, which was drawn up in front of the house where Lionel lived. It was No. 7, on the left-hand side of the street as you go up.

Lionel ran upstairs at the last minute, and he kissed Nurse and said:

"Thank you for washing me. I wish I'd let you do the other ear. No--there's no time now. Give me the hanky. Good-bye, Nurse."

"Good-bye, ducky," said Nurse; "be a good little King now, and say 'please' and 'thank you,' and remember to pass the cake to the little girls, and don't have more than two helpings of anything."

So off went Lionel to be made King. He had never expected to be a King any more than you have, so it was all quite new to him--so new that he had never even thought of it. And as the coach went through the town he had to bite his tongue to be quite sure it was real, because if his tongue was real it showed he wasn't dreaming. Half an hour before he had been building with bricks in the nursery; and now--the streets were all fluttering with flags; every window was crowded with people waving handkerchiefs and scattering flowers; there were scarlet soldiers everywhere along the pavements, and all the bells of all the churches were ringing like mad, and like a great song to the music of their ringing he heard thousands of people shouting, "Long live Lionel! Long live our little King!"

He was a little sorry at first that he had not put on his best clothes, but he soon forgot to think about that. If he had been a girl he would very likely have bothered about it the whole time.

As they went along, the grave gentlemen, who were the Chancellor and the Prime Minister, explained the things which Lionel did not understand.

"I thought we were a republic," said Lionel. "I'm sure there hasn't been a King for some time."

"Sire, your great-great-great-great-great-grandfather's death happened when my grandfather was a little boy," said the Prime Minister, "and since then your loyal people have been saving up to buy you a crown--so much a week, you know, according to people's means--sixpence a week from those who have first-rate pocket-money, down to a halfpenny a week from those who haven't so much. You know it's the rule that the crown must be paid for by the people."

"But hadn't my great-great-however-much-it-is-grand-father a crown?"

"Yes, but he sent it to be tinned over, for fear of vanity, and he had had all the jewels taken out, and sold them to buy books. He was a strange man; a very good King he was, but he had his faults--he was fond of books. Almost with his latest breath he sent the crown to be tinned--and he never lived to pay the tinsmith's bill."

Here the Prime Minister wiped away a tear, and just then the carriage stopped and Lionel was taken out of the carriage to be crowned. Being crowned is much more tiring work than you would suppose, and by the time it was over, and Lionel had worn the royal robes for an hour or two and had had his hand kissed by everybody whose business it was to do it, he was quite worn out, and was very glad to get into the palace nursery.

Nurse was there, and tea was ready: seedy cake and plummy cake, and jam and hot buttered toast, and the prettiest china with red and gold and blue flowers on it, and real tea, and as many cups of it as you liked. After tea Lionel said:

"I think I should like a book. Will you get me one, Nurse?"

"Bless the child," said Nurse, "you don't suppose you've lost the use of your legs with just being a King? Run along, do, and get your books yourself."

So Lionel went down into the library. The Prime Minister and the Chancellor were there, and when Lionel came in they bowed very low, and were beginning to ask Lionel most politely what on earth he was coming bothering for now--when Lionel cried out:

"Oh, what a worldful of books! Are they yours?"

"They are yours, Your Majesty," answered the Chancellor. "They were the property of the late King, your great-great--"

"Yes, I know," Lionel interrupted. "Well, I shall read them all. I love to read. I am so glad I learned to read."

"If I might venture to advise Your Majesty," said the Prime Minister, "I should not read these books. Your great--"

"Yes?" said Lionel, quickly.

"He was a very good King--oh, yes, really a very superior King in his way, but he was a little--well, strange."

"Mad?" asked Lionel, cheerfully.

"No, no"--both the gentlemen were sincerely shocked. "Not mad; but if I may express it so, he was--er--too clever by half. And I should not like a little King of mine to have anything to do with his books."

Lionel looked puzzled.

"The fact is," the Chancellor went on, twisting his red beard in an agitated way, "your great--"

"Go on," said Lionel.

"Was called a wizard."

"But he wasn't?"

"Of course not--a most worthy King was your great--"

"I see."

"But I wouldn't touch his books."

"Just this one," cried Lionel, laying his hands on the cover of a great brown book that lay on the study table. It had gold patterns on the brown leather, and gold clasps with turquoises and rubies in the twists of them, and gold corners, so that the leather should not wear out too quickly.

"I must look at this one," Lionel said, for on the back in big letters he read: "The Book of Beasts."

The Chancellor said, "Don't be a silly little King."

But Lionel had got the gold clasps undone, and he opened the first page, and there was a beautiful butterfly all red, and brown, and yellow, and blue, so beautifully painted that it looked as if it were alive.

"There," said Lionel, "isn't that lovely? Why--"

But as he spoke the beautiful butterfly fluttered its many-colored wings on the yellow old page of the book, and flew up and out of the window.

"Well!" said the Prime Minister, as soon as he could speak for the lump of wonder that had got into his throat and tried to choke him, "that's magic, that is."

But before he had spoken the King had turned the next page, and there was a shining bird complete and beautiful in every blue feather of him. Under him was written, "Blue Bird of Paradise," and while the King gazed enchanted at the charming picture the blue bird fluttered his wings on the yellow page and spread them and flew out of the book.

Then the Prime Minister snatched the book away from the King and shut it up on the blank page where the bird had been, and put it on a very high shelf. And the Chancellor gave the King a good shaking, and said:

"You're a naughty, disobedient little King," and was very angry indeed.

"I don't see that I've done any harm," said Lionel. He hated being shaken, as all the boys do; he would much rather have been slapped.

"No harm?" said the Chancellor. "Ah--but what do you know about it? That's the question. How do you know what might have been on the next page--a snake or a worm, or a centipede or a revolutionist, or something like that."

"Well, I'm sorry if I've vexed you," said Lionel. "Come let's kiss and be friends." So he kissed the Prime Minister, and they settled down for a nice quiet game of noughts and crosses, while the Chancellor went to add up his accounts.

But when Lionel was in bed he could not sleep for thinking of the book, and when the full moon was shining with all her might and light he got up and crept down to the library and climbed up and got The Book of Beasts.

He took it outside onto the terrace, where the moonlight was as bright as day, and he opened the book, and saw the empty pages with "Butterfly" and "Blue Bird of Paradise" _underneath, and then he turned the next page. There was some sort of red thing sitting under a palm tree, and under it was written "Dragon." The dragon did not move, and the King shut up the book rather quickly and went back to bed.

But the next day he wanted another look, so he got the book out into the garden, and when he undid the clasps with the rubies and turquoises, the book opened all by itself at the picture with...

NOT illustrated

Be warned that the $5.99 paperback edition with the purple and black moonlit dragon cover is NOT illustrated, despite the Amazon description. Since the enchanting illustrations are a major reason I loved this book as a child this was extremely disappointing and I'm now going to have to find an illustrated edition. Otherwise the book is fine and the cover picture is quite attractive.
Amazon should have separate webpages for various editions when they differ in important respects. I feel this was misleading advertising, but returning the book would cost more in postage than it's worth.

The editorial reviews portion of the description for the kindle edition state's "with H.R. Millar's original b&w illustrations". There are no illustrations at all in the kindle edition that I received. I paid $2.99 for what is available for free from Project Gutenberg. It even has a reference to the Project Gutenber License terms at the beginning of the book!

A classic, like all of Nesbit's children's books.
By L. Hoyt
E. Nesbit's books have a well-deserved place on my shelf next to C. S. Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia and Lloyd Alexander's Prydain Chronicles, and more recently, Harry Potter. I discovered her books through those of Edward Eager; if you have read and enjoyed any of E. Nesbit's books before, I recommend you take the opposite journey and check out Eager's books now (start with Half Magic.) A real treat.
