K-Gr 2—In a fictional tale inspired by Grant Wood, the painter of American Gothic, Tillie, a cow, longs for her companion when he goes to Paris to study under the masters. When Europe proves to be a disappointment, the artist returns home to paint the things he loves, to the delight of his cow. The simple text reads aloud easily, and the horizontal format captures the rolling hillsides of the Iowa countryside. The impressionistic speckles of Smith's illustrations come from his use of a toothbrush and combine well with the soft shapes of watercolor and ink. Although the bold stenciled outlines of his shapes vaguely recall Wood's style, their dreamlike tints and subtle texture is no substitute (nor are they intended to be) for the heroism of Wood's exaggerated curves, strong colors, and bird's-eye perspective. The simple story is written as if it were a true account of events. An author's note addresses the embellishments and made-up bits, but the tender message to draw inspiration from the things you love still holds true in this mixture of fact and fiction. About the Author
Monica Kulling is the author of over 40 books for children, including the popular Great Idea series, stories of inventors. The third book in the series, In the Bag! Margaret Knight Wraps It Up, was nominated for the 2012 Governor General’s Award for illustration and chosen as the 2012 Simon Wiesenthal Honor Book. In addition, her work has been nominated for numerous Silver Birch Express and Golden Oak awards. Her recent picture books include Lumpito and the Painter from Spain, Mister Dash and the Cupcake Calamity and The Tweedes Go Electric. She lives in Toronto, Canada.

Sydney Smith was born in rural Nova Scotia, and has been drawing since an early age. Since graduating from NSCAD University, he has illustrated multiple children’s books, including the wordless picture book Sidewalk Flowers, and he has received awards for his illustrations, including the Lillian Shepherd Memorial Award for Excellence in Illustration. He now lives in Toronto and works in a shared studio space in Chinatown where he eats too many banh mi sandwiches and goes to the library or the Art Gallery of Ontario on his breaks.

What a Cow!

Monica excels in the historical biography. This is particularly true when she uses the special relationship between artist and beloved pet as a metaphor to showcase how the power of friendship and love can influence the creative process. Two of my favorite examples of this include her award-winning “Lumpito and the Painter of Spain” and “When Emily Carr Met Woo.”

In this “gently wise picture book,” Grant Wood struggles to find his artistic voice. He longs to go to Paris, because that’s where everyone goes to become an artist. Once he arrives, he even dons the beret and grows a moustache, just like all the Parisian artists. But his paintings are awkward and do not sell. He cannot find that creative spark. Instead, he dreams of home, and taking long walks with his best friend, his cow Tillie.

While Tillie is a fictional creation, she serves as a perfect symbol used in similar fashion as Monica's previous books. Tillie exemplifies the process that an artist must go through to find his center: he learns to be true to himself by painting what makes his heart sing.

The illustrations by renowned Nova Scotia artist Syndey Smith are just beyond glorious.

and in this sweet picture book

Artist Grant Wood felt bonded to the landscape of home, and in this sweet picture book, his cow, Tillie, represents all that makes him feel happy and safe. Wood travels to Paris to live the life of a "real artist," but finds he misses Tillie and the spiritual landscape that feeds him. His return to rural Iowa unleashed his artistic gifts in a way that Paris hadn't.

In an author's note, Kulling makes clear what parts of the story are factual, which not, but the story hung together for me even if Tillie's role in Wood's transformation may not have happened exactly that way. Wood did say, "I realized that all the really good ideas I’d ever had came to me while I was milking a cow. So I went back to Iowa."

Sydney Smith's illustrations fit perfectly, and make Iowa as appealing as Wood found it.

The story of Jon the pig and Bernard the Iron Golem continues in this fun read

As a retired teacher and grandparent, it is important to me that children enjoy reading.
My granddaughter enjoys the Minecraft books by Christopher Craft and we have been waiting for this one to be released. My granddaughter gives it a thumbs up for a great story. Jon the pig and Bernard the Iron Golem are back together in this story and they end up having to figure out a way to save a village in this fast paced and fun read.
I also am giving this book a thumbs up as when I see a child engrossed in a book and eager for the next book to be released, I know we have found a winner.
So with this being said - two thumbs up. Great read - surprise your child or grandchild with this book, I think you'll make their day.

Starting off with a great first mission

The unique team of Jon the pig and Bernard the Iron Golem are back together on their first mission as Explorers, those who set out to promote peace amongst all of the people. Once again my young readers were drawn into the excitement of the Minecraft setting and the well written plot. It is tense when they seem to find themselves in the middle of a creeper-zombie war, and Jon and Bernard have to try unusual tactics to help save a village. Parents will like the message of listening and thinking while young readers and Minecraft fans will love the action and adventure that author Christopher Craft delivers every time. It looks like there are more missions to come, and we are looking forward to it.

Great entertaining book

I bought this book for my brother who loves playing the game Minecraft. He is not really into reading so I purchased him these books to really get him interested in reading. He tells me he really enjoys these types of books and that he wants to read more. As a big brother I felt proud of him taken and interest to reading and I hope it branches off in his later life. I highly recommend this book to children that love Minecraft as they will be interested in the book.

Love how this book invites the reader to quietly think, reflect and interpret. The visual narrative alone tells the tale (there are no words in the story) . It's an excellent tool for supporting emotional literacy, self awareness and empathy skills.

Nice weather turns to darkness

This a wordless picture book. Nice weather turns to darkness. The boy is in a dark forest. There's a picture of a jaguar, then the weather becomes sunny again. I don't think it's appropriate to have a metaphorical conversation about depression with young children. Very, very odd book.

A must read for all ages

When I was asked to consider this book for review, the cute white cat got pointed out to me as a feature of the story I may like. I thought so too, and the cat is adorable! I love the way the little white paw prints appear in some scenes, and how slowly the cat brings the nameless boy (no words in the story) out of his depression. This is a brilliant book which doesn't need words – it's up to the reader (especially if they have someone older with them) to figure out what's going on, and it means they can pretend to be the nameless character more than if he had a name (although if he was a girl that would be ace!).

He struggles in life, and finds a turning point when the cute white cat first appears, and then takes a more prominent place in his life. Depression is accurately depicted. It's important for younger readers to have Meh because it explains clearly what they or their friends may be feeling, and how there is hope for them to be happier again.

Excellent if you know how to use it

"Colloquial Chinese" (the older version) is an excellent Mandarin primer, as long as you are aware of its limitations and have a plan for supplementing it. The only real problem with this book is that it uses a lot of Maoist scenarios that were relevant in the early eighties but are now rather comical. Once chapter, for example, talks about going to visit the Clear Mountain People's Commune. Although this will not help you much in China today it is only a minor setback.
To make this series work, I suggest you do two things. First, get the supplementary character text book, as this one only uses the Pyin Yin romanization system. Second, get a tutor, or conversation partner, or someone to help you out. Not only will that person help you learn the material, but the chances are he/she will give you more updated, contextual information to supplement the lessons.
Other than that, this is an excellent book. If you stick with the lessons and listen to the tapes you will develop a foundation in Mandarin.

solid, traditional course for the long-term learner

This is a strong course for the motivated learner keen to get a solid grounding in the basics of Mandarin Chinese grammar and vocabulary in order to continue their studies at a higher level. Someone who is more interested in quickly learning situational language and useful phrases for travelling or for business would be better served by a different course more focused on their particular needs since the vocabulary given in this one is quite general.
There's another book with the same title and publisher, but by a different author (K Qian). That book is simpler and more suitable for the casual learner wanting to learn Chinese for travelling, but it doesn't reach as high a level of Chinese as this one. But then again, neither is it as hard going!
Back to this one: there are no Chinese characters in the book. To learn these, it would be useful to buy the companion chinese character version of the book, which gives all the texts and grammatical pattern sentences, but not the grammar explanations, in Chinese characters and teaches you how to write the 700 plus characters introduced. That's available only directly from the authors I think. Unfortunately, there aren't any cassette tapes currently available for this book so it's not really suitable for someone learning completely by themselves unless they already have a good knowledge of Mandarin Chinese pronunciation. Nor are the answers to the exercises given. So it's more suitable to use with a tutor or as supplementary reading for someone attending a chinese class.
I have two quibbles with the book. Firstly, the grammar explanations are a bit dryly written so they are not always easy to understand. Secondly, the lengths of the chapters vary too much. The first few lessons are quite short and concise (perhaps 20 new words get introduced) but by the end of the book, the number of new words given per chapter has ballooned to well over 100. So the later chapters are much more hard going than the earlier ones. The first point can be overcome by buying a set of good Chinese grammars, e.g. the books "Basic Chinese" and "Intermediate Chinese" by Yip and Rimmington and of course by asking your Chinese teacher!
If you include learning how to write, I think there's enough material in the book for 6 months of intensive study or a year for someone who wants to study more slowly (but still regularly).
After mastering the material in the book and learning the 500-700 associated characters, the learner is well-placed to go on to a lower-intermediate text, i.e. at the beginning 2nd year college level.

A very good, and actually colloquial, course

First off, this book is entirely written in Roman characters, not Chinese characters. It uses the standard Pinyin romanization developed in the PRC. Secondly, it seems quite complete. I'm now halfway through it, and it seems to be covering all basic syntax, and not just the introductions or phrases included in other introductions for popular audiences. I'm using it to review Chinese after having taken an intensive university course a year and a half ago. I'm finding it quite excellent for that purpose, getting me up to speed without the slowing burden of trying to read characters. I expect that next time I'm in China I'll do much better at speaking and understanding than last time.

About the Author
Jo Williamson has worked for many years as a fashion designer for large retailers, but studying Children’s Book Illustration at Cambridge School of Art has enabled her to fulfill her dream of being an illustrator. Although she still works part-time in fashion, Jo now spends as much time as she can drawing and creating characters in her irresistibly jam-packed sketchbooks. Jo lives with her husband in England and is currently campaigning for a dog of her own.

"Claudia to the Rescue"

Hi! My name is Sadira Jewelsten! I�ve read BSC books since I was eight until I was seventeen. I really enjoyed �Claudia and the Terrible Truth�. It brought about a very sensitive subject in a way that kids and teens alike would be able to understand it.
It all begins when the BSC receives a new client who isn�t all he seems.
Claudia finds this out when she is assigned to baby-sit Joey and Nate and discovers a horrible secret about their home life-Nate and Joey are being abused by their father.
The boys first lie to Claudia about where they�ve gotten some of the bruises that Claudia is able to see, but later, Claudia-unseen by the father-witnesses it from a hiding place on the stairs. She doesn�t� know what to do at first, but then she does the right thing and tells her mother.
Ann m. Martin definitely has a way of bringing her readers into the story. I felt like I was right there with Claudia, feeling exactly as nervous and confused as she stood on the stairs and heard the loud slap of the boys being hit. That�s how powerful it was.
For anyone who is looking for a book that brings up a the subject of abusie in a way that really opens your eyes to it, I highly recommend �Claudia and the Terrible Truth�.

Good Book, But Very Sad!

I enjoyed Claudia and the Terrible Truth. She starts sitting for new clients, the Nicholls. Nate and Joey are nice, well behaved boys, but they seem too jumpy and nervous. Claudia doesn't like the way Mr. Nicholls yell at the boys and his wife. He seems to have harsh rules like no talking at the dinnertable and no stuffed animals and bedtime stories. He says stuffed animals are childish and the boys are 8 and 5. Nate admitted to Claudia that their father threw away their stuffed animals given by their mother! He even threw a huge fit over a peanut butter jar left by Claudia on the counter. BIG DEAL! It's nothing to make war about, it's not like Claudia and the boys trashed the kitchen. Claudia notices that he verbally abuses Nate, Joey, and Mrs. Nicholls. The boys got all nervous about grass stains and paint stains at a parade meeting. I mean, they're kids and they deserve to play. Your childhood is short and that's what washing machines are for! The boys even got severly punished because Joey touched his father's briefcase! He didn't break it or mess up the stuff in it. Even though Nate didn't do anything, he was punished along with Joey and they had to scrub down the house while Claudia supervised and were banned from the parade meeting, tv, snack, and friends. Then Claudia heard Mr. Nicholls holler about his paper being in the recycle bin and smacked Joey hard. She decided to tell her mom about it and the boys and mother were removed from the house and went to live with relatives. At least they were safe from that evil jerk. I disagree with the reader from Maryland. Claudia never mentioned about never being smacked by her parents. She mentioned that she and her sister were never raised hell at by their parents like Mr. Nicholls did with his boys. It's okay to be firm with your kids and discipline them when they do something wrong, but abuse is not okay. Mr. Nicholls was very dominating and abusive. He reminded me of a Nazi. He took inventory of every crumb of food in the house and wanted everything obsessively neat and perfect in the house. Only robots could be perfectly neat.Anyways, I give this book a 10.

Helps you understand what to do if you are abused

Claudia is really excited when she sits for the Nichollas kids but they act strange. Claudia thinks they either hate her or scared of her. But later she finds out that Mr Nichollas makes a big deal of things and abuses his children and is mean to them. Mr Nichollas acts nice and a normal father around her. So Claudia gets her mother to help her. In the end Joey and Nate the - baby-sitting charges and their mother move to New York. I give it 10 out of 10!
