Peter was just a little boy when he was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. He was scared of having his blood checked and fearful of the insulin injections. Peter thought about his special skills and developed several strategies he can use to cope with the injections and other challenges he will face. These are strategies anyone can use, child or adult, is in a similar situation and needs to find an effective way to cope.
About the Author
Angela Cleveland, M.S.Ed., M.Ed., MA has been a school counselor since September 2001. She has worked with students from grades 5 - 12, providing personal, academic, and group counseling services to address wide variety of needs. She is currently co-chair of BoroSAFE, a local suicide awareness and prevention organization as well as an anti-bullying specialist. Ms. Cleveland has spoken at several universities and conferences about using technology to enhance students' opportunities for learning, to improve one's professional practice, and to deliver instructional and counseling services more effectively.Ms. Cleveland grew up in New Jersey and attended William Paterson University, where she earned degrees in English and Education as well as an Honors in Humanities. She attended the University of Pennsylvania, earning an M.S.Ed. in Psychological Services. Ms. Cleveland began her career as school counselor in 2001, and she remained driven to learn more about the field of education and leadership. She went on to earn an M.Ed. in Instruction from The College of New Jersey and an MA in Organizational Leadership from Rider University. She earned several educational certifications, including Google Certified Educator, Director of School Counseling Services, School Supervisor.Ms. Cleveland is actively involved in several professional organizations, including the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), New Jersey School Counseling Association (NJSCA), and Somerset County School Counselor's Association.
Ms. Cleveland lives in New Jersey with her husband Scott and cat Sydney.

What an adorable story!

Angela Cleveland created a delightful way to educate children, parents, and teachers about the diagnosis and treatment Type 1 Diabetes. Her approach to the topic is both compassionate and positive as it highlights a young boy's healthy response to his situation. "Peter's Special Concoction" is perfect for hospitals, doctor's offices, and schools. It belongs in every elementary and middle school library!

This story is a fantastic resource! It was wonderful to find a book that addresses the issue of Type 1 Diabetes in a way that reaches children of any age. Mrs. Cleveland masterfully tackles a sensitive subject in a way that can be helpful to children as well as their caregivers. I would recommend this incredible resource to anyone looking to explain Type 1 Diabetes to children. Kids will be able to see that they can lead full, healthy and happy lives while effectively managing their health condition. This is a great way for kids to see that while they may have health needs that are different than some, they are still special in their own wonderful way!

Adorable and Delightful Story!

What an adorable story! Well written, easy and fun to read, this story is a wonderful way to help children of all ages learn how to face life's challenges (in this case, Type 1 diabetes) and cope and overcome fear that may come along with it. This book clearly demonstrates Angela Cleveland's compassionate nature. Her creativity also shines in this book as she created all of the artwork in the book. I highly recommend adding this book to the reading list!
