Something different for the Francophile's year-long enjoyment

I ordered this calendar as a gift and can't resist buying another for myself. The drawings are in the charming typically French style of the 50's and 60's. Each month features a montage of a landmark with French products and writing floating about on the page. The paper is a nice glossy medium-weight. Months are named in English, French and Spanish. International holidays are given.

The illustrations stole the show, but this is a great book!

This is the kind of book you give a kid when they get that first coveted 64-pack of crayons. This is the kind of book I wish I’d had when I was little, lamenting that first chipped crayon tip. This is the kind of book you enjoy sitting down to read right before the promise of a few blank sheets of paper for your 7 year old.

I found this book to be filled with excitement – who’d think that coloring with crayons is all that exciting, right? But somehow Evan’s adventures are fun and exploratory. As he tries to work around his broken and missing crayons, he actually learns about the nature of color (ROY G BIV, anyone?) and how basic shades blend together to create a robust palette of color. This would be appropriate for any age from baby through early elementary school.

I let my 7 year old read this by herself, and and while she’s not new to crayons and is more into markers and colored pencils, she found this book to be a very enjoyable read. In discussing it, she said that she “liked that he actually learned how to mix the colors to make a new one.” The author’s ability to make this book educational was subtle yet engaging.

Not surprisingly, the illustrations really steal the show. They start off as simple sketches with a splash of color on Evan as the focus. But then the book becomes a burst of color through vibrant drawings. It’s almost frenetic, the way Evan covers the pages of the book with scribbles, traces, and other childlike pictures.

I found myself reading this with a smile on my face, and for that alone I’d recommend it. But it’s a really solid, interesting, and educational book rolled into an eye-catching package. If you don’t have this on your shelf, you’re missing out!

Beautiful and Fun

Nothing is better than a fresh box of crayons, but what happens once those crayons start snapping? And crushing? And disappearing? Magic, that's what happens!

I don't know how they did it, but this author/illustrator team made a very simple book that beautifully portrays the life of a box of crayons. This story shows creativity in the regular coloring way, but in also dealing with unexpected snaps and breaks. Of course we get to learn about colors mixing together, and that helps when those silly crayons start disappearing. Eventually we are left with the most basic, most important colors and a last bit of magic.

I do love this book and almost everything about it. I felt the ending could have possibly gone somewhere a little more magical. The illustrations are great, but they might not be as appealing to little kids, the target age group. Overall, this book is still worth sharing.

A Great Story about Imagination and Art

I absolutely loved this book, the illustrations and the text go so well together and will draw the reader or listener into the story.

We all remember getting that new box of crayons and trying so hard not to bread them; well this is the story about what happens when despite his best efforts, Evan's brown crayon breaks in half. He realizes that he now has 2 brown crayons and can draw with both. When a colour disappears, he realizes that he can mix colours to make a new one. He can make thick lines and shade with the side of a crayon. His drawings change and become more exciting as he experiments with his crayons. Not only will it show kids what you can do with broken crayons, it teaches about the colour wheel without teaching. A wonderful book that I recommend to parents, teachers, libraries etc.

A useful, functional day-to-day calendar that also helps you learn or practice Italian. Perfect gift for anyone who loves Italy.

I've received the "Italian Day-to-Day Calendar" as a Christmas present each of the last two years, and it's one of the first things I add to my "Christmas Wish List" every year since the first.
This is a page-a-day calendar. Each day has a vocabulary word in English and Italian, then a short sentence in each language using that word. It's a good way to practice your Italian if you're getting ready for a trip there soon, or just want to keep up with the language for work or family reasons.
The Italian word has a "syllibication" pronunciation guide that is *VERY* helpful. For example, l'inferno (een-FEHR-noh) helps you not only know to use the "long-e" sound at the start, but which syllable to emphasize.
The pages are a good size, about 4.5" square, so along with the Italian vocabulary lesson, there's ample room for writing down a few appointments or reminders.

This is functional both as a calendar and as a learning aid for the Italian language. I highly recommend it for all Italophiles out there.

Finally a decent calendar that the weeks start on Sundays

The best features about this calendar book are that it has the two most important things to me for a calendar: 1) spiral binding so the book can be folded and 2) the weeks start on Sundays! It is very difficult to find this type of calendar. One of the bookstore chains used to carry this particular style but haven't for a couple of years. The art is appreciated and there is plenty of room to write. Each page has the current month's calendar but not the prior or next. However, at the back there is a page that has the current and following year's calendars. Oh, and I like that it doesn't have the last 3 to 6 months of the 2015 calendar! Really, I don't understand that design feature!

Colors are disappointing

I've bought these engagement calendars for years. Last year I was a little disappointed in the colors; they seemed yellowish and murky to me but I bought another one this year. Sad to say the colors are even worse. I don't know if they are using cheaper paper or what but I am going to have to return this. If you don't mind washed out colors the rest of the calendar is fine---nice size, and plenty of room for notes. The cover is gorgeous---too bad the pictures inside are so poor.

Fun, interactive book...promoting imagination play

This book is perfect for toddlers and very young children. It is creative, expressive and interactive. It is a very sturdy and kid-friendly board board, one which will make your child giggle and play as he/she uses his imagination to become the character illustrated on each page.

As each page is turned, a new experience awaits. Your child will delight in becoming a strong roaring lion, a fuzzy brown bear, a snapping turtle, a hooting owl or even a sly old snake, just to name a few. There are 17 opportunities to get imaginations perking and your child to become the star of the book.

The really unique fun part is that the animal's faces are substituted by your child's peeking through a four-inch circular cut-out and making faces and sounds like the animal he is supposed to represent. What an interesting and challenging way to teach little ones about a variety of animals in his world.

The final page inspires your child to be anything he wants with the message, "I Can be anything!" It includes a mylar mirror that reflects those words right back at your child. Brilliant marketing for sure. I love this idea suggested by the author himself...

Fun board book

This is a delightful board book that will be hilarious to share with a young child. Each page has an illustration of an animal and a sentence about that animal on it - and there is a die-cut hole where the head of the animal should be. A child can peep through the hole and pretend to be the animal whilst performing the described action associated with that creature.

Whilst simple in content it is rich in fun. The illustrations are clear, brightly coloured stylistic representations of the animals that children will quickly learn to recognise. I like the way the sentences refer to actions actually associated with the creatures, helping children learn about these. The final illustration is of a flower with its centre missing and the sentence ‘I can be anything!’ - a brilliant ending leaving this page with endless possibilities!

Overall this is a great board book to share with youngsters!

Great Way to Introduce Animals!

This one actually happens to be a board book making it nice and sturdy for little hands learning how to handle things. Very nice when reading to a little one that wants to touch, play, and explore everything.

This book features a nice large sized hole where all the faces of the animals should be. This allows for you or your child (or both!) to imitate the animal on any given page.

I really like this one because it introduces children to a lot of different animals. It also allows them to practice animal noises or behaviors (such as a snake sticking out its tongue).

I Can Roar Like a Lion is sure to lead to a very fun and interactive storytime. Be ready to have a lot of laughs!

Fangtastic

This is a really cute addition to the MH book family. It's presented as a book written by the main six ghouls themselves with guest appearances by other characters. There are also nifty bits to unfold (like a ticket stub from a concert, or a photo) and I love stuff like that. Everyone sounds like themselves and monster puns aplenty. I really liked the nods to various trivia bits, like Frankies many (many, many) crushes or Deuce's love of cooking. Everyone gets a chance to shine and it's definitely worth a read.

Wonderful book! We headed straight to the computer to seek more historical info (just like Cody, in the book). Great for kids but adults will like it as well. I can't wait to reread it and to see what Shane Phipps comes up with next!

Can't recommend this book highly enough! Such an awesome idea for a story. Teenagers will love it and adults will learn a lot too. Much of the history content in this book is not the mainstream fare that you learned in school. The protagonist, Cody, experiences way more than he bargains for when he reads these old journals!

The Important of Being a Good Sport

Nate and his soccer team, the Strikers, hope to be able to defeat the Monarchs, a talented team who bested them the previous year. Nate and his friend, Sergio, are good players, and practice hard because they want to be competitive. When Nate sees his aunt, a former college player who is in a women's league, kick the ball out of bounds rather than score when a player on the opposing team is down, Nate is surprised. His aunt says that not benefiting from the injury of another player is a long standing soccer tradition, even if it is not technically in the rules, and she is surprised that he has never heard of it. The two also make a bet-- the person to get fewer goals will have to make chocolate chip cookies for the one who scores more! As the game with the Monarchs approaches, both teams try to compete against each other, even comparing times in gym class sprints! At a crucial moment in the game, Nate decides to embrace his aunt's idea of good sportsmanship, but his teammates aren't happy with him. How can he convince them that winning is not the most important thing on the soccer field?

Like all Bowen sports titles, this book had lots of good descriptions of soccer playing, and even had schedules, scores, and times for readers who like statistics. Since I've never actually seen soccer being played, I'll have to assume that all the plays are accurate, but I know that they are written in an exciting way that makes the book read quickly.

Nate is a typical middle grade boy, who jokes with his friends at lunch, loves his soccer, and starts out thinking that beating the Monarchs is the only way that he can be happy. His aunt is a great character, and it is fun to see him go to her soccer games, as well as accompany her to games about which she is reporting. Sergio is a good foil, and he, too, eventually sees the benefit of being sportsmanlike.

Additional information, like a cookie recipe (and descriptions of Nate having to make them with his aunt!) and real life examples of good sportsmanship are a nice supplement. Younger readers, or older readers who struggle, will find this book is one that engages their interest and challenges their perceptions of how sports should be played.

Lacking information, oversimplified for a sixth grader

Although the title indicates this is a sixth grade history book, it isn't. This book is overly simplified and there are barely any facts presented about the first civilization. There are basic grammatical mistakes, and it's a picture book more suited toward a preschooler or kindergartener, though the facts presented wouldn't be interesting to them. The facts are basic demographic information and there isn't really any insight into the first civilizations.

The book takes on the format of breaking the first civilizations into three different sections. First Ancient Mesopotamia, next Ancient Egypt, and finally the Indus Valley Civilization. Within each section you are given four photos of the area they are discussing, two of those photos have brief facts, usually a sentence or two, that are oversimplified and fail to present a story for the young mind to grab onto.

I do not recommend this book to anyone. It is over simplified and doesn't present enough information to consider it a sixth grade book, not to mention sixth graders are beyond picture books. For younger kids the picture book aspect works, but the information is dry and doesn't really tell them anything about those civilizations except basic demographic info which a younger child wouldn't find interesting.

This book needs more details, more discussion of the development of these civilizations, their challenges and advancements, culture, governments, an so much more. This book doesn't provide any of this information leaving it to be a worthless resource that wouldn't help any child in learning about these areas.

Great photos, just wish it went into more detail, geared toward younger readers not 6th graders....

Another Baby Professor book with some cool pictures. There are about 200 books in this ebook series that are offered in the kindle store for either free or for .99¢. You can't really go wrong with the books offered for free. There is a variety of subjects covered and most of the books follow about the same format. You can take a peek inside the books by clicking "Look Inside" and this is pretty much what you get in each book.

This particular book is nice and the photos are fantastic. The format for this book is similar to most of the Baby Professor books in this series which have a picture with a paragraph and facts on one page. Then the next page is just a photo. This book is actually lacking even more information than most because an entire other page has another picture with just the title of the name of the next civilization that it will talk about. It would be nice if they had another paragraph on that page too. I've come to realize that these Baby Professor books usually have something that could easily make them better, but so many of these books are offered for free and the pictures really are amazing, so it's tough to complain.

Anyway, overall, I do like theses books for their wonderful pictures. It would be nice if the books went into more detail but they are very basic books that I hope will get my kids interested in finding more about each subject.

I plan on keeping these books on my iPad for down time for my kids when they get bored waiting different places like the doctors office or practice for a sibling. I sometimes watch a friends 3 year old daughter and she likes to look through the pictures on my phone. I plan on showing her these books to keep her entertained. I think she will love them.

Brief but educational

The book “6th Grade History: First Civilizations” is one of the books in a series of educational books written by Professor Baby and published by Speedy Publishing. This book, which is a part of the “Children's Ancient History Books” series, provides children with a chance to learn about history in a fun and exciting way. These books are filled with exceptional photographs and content geared towards capturing a 6th grader's attention span. Easy and fun to read! These books are excellent for use in the classroom or at home. Excellent tool to help children not only learn about the past, but it helps to encourage them to read as well.

This colorful short book provides children with a brief overview on three of the first civilizations. Beautiful, detailed, colored photos along with age appropriate descriptions and fun facts about Ancient Mesopotamia, Ancient Egypt and the Indus Valley Civilization, can all be found in this book.

These books are great conversation starters for children. The beautiful pictures open up a dialogue for children to express what they see and what they understand by looking at the photographs. Finally, a good tip for parents- these books are great for bedtime! Quick and easy to read, while also providing a little education to your child.

An Awesome Story and Beautiful Illustrations!

Piglet Bo is an adorable little pig that is determined to be brave while concurring goal after goal.
This book is so cute!! 4 year old Alice laughed with each and every page. When Piglet Bo decides he can walk on water "If I like. If I dare." he jumps as a big 'ole whale just happens to swim by; Piglet Bo decides he really can walk on water!! I thought Alice was going to fall over she laughed so hard!
The entire book is a series of fun and very imaginative coincidences all to reiterate the fact that Piglet Bo CAN DO Anything!!
Through out the book there are hidden four-leaf clovers which Alice loved hunting for.
This book is beautifully illustrated by Tineke Van Hemeldonck. The illustrations so fun, imaginative and well, perfect!
The book is written so creatively that I don't mind reading it over and over again!
Alice loves to hear read over and over again? This is a cute book with a powerful message! You can DO ANYTHING! You just have to try!

Cute Book!

Piglet Bo Can Do Anything! is such a cute book for kids! This book is about a little pig that is brave and determined to complete goal after goal and with a little luck he does just that. I love that this book teaches kids to believe in themselves and to be brave and determined. My kids really enjoyed reading all the things that Piglet Bo could do and also enjoyed meeting his friends. Another fun thing about this book is that there's a hidden four leaf clover on each page that my kids had a blast locating. My kids and I loved the bright colorful illustrations and enjoyed the light humor throughout the book. This is a wonderful book! What a fun read! This story is about a piglet with lofty goals and a heck of a lot of good luck. The reader gets to watch Piglet Bo perform incredible feat after incredible feat, but the reader knows something Piglet Bo doesn't: he owes part of his success to having great luck!

But the other part of his success comes from believing with his whole heart that he can do super awesome things. Believing in yourself is, indeed, a necessary ingredient for success!
