Action-packed Graphic Novel

The Creeps: Carol (Hacker extraordinaire), Mitchell (Monster expert), Jarvis (Gadget wizard) and Rosario( Super-ripped fashionista) are apart of a crime-solving squad at their Pumpkins County Middle School. These students and classmates like to solve spooky mysteries. The Creeps use their unique talents and humor throughout this funny action-packed graphic novel to find out who's responsible for the missing frog specimens that are intended to be dissected in their science class project.
One of my favorite parts is the investigation of Perry Milburn who was the only sixth grader to ever win first place at the state science fair. The Creeps felt he could be a suspect in the disappearance of the school's frogs. Perry went missing after losing his title two years later and is believed to be maintaining a secret laboratory in the sewers using old discarded school equipment for mysterious experiments.
I really enjoyed the reading. This fictional book was entertaining from beginning to end. The story and characters are well developed. The author does a great job of building suspense, and keeping the reader guessing. I'm giving a rating of five stars and feel parents and kids of all ages will feel the same.

I had a blast reading this comic. It's perfect for kids and their parents. It's full of humor and horror on many levels. The world and characters are developed. I can't wait to see this series grow.

Her parents reassure her that they can bring the Hanukkah celebration with them and share it with her father's family. They even give her an early Hanukkah gift—a super cool menorah with a team of all-girl Maccabees to hold the candles! Rachel puts the menorah in her carry-on bag and then forgets it on the plane. The little girl is heartbroken, but her Nonna is a smart woman and, after having Rachel describe the menorah, comes up with the perfect, and perfumed, solution. The book includes a brief description of Hanukkah in the body of the story, with a paragraph at the end adding a little more. This title would make a fine read-aloud for a multicultural holiday storytime. Attractive illustrations in primarily in blues and greens are both humorous and tender. This is the perfect tale for children who celebrate bother Hanukkah and Christmas ...

Rachel stood in the doorway looking at her parents as they began to gather up clothing for a trip to Nonna’s. No way Rachel wanted to go because it was a very special time of year. Hannukah was coming and if they went for a visit, they’d miss it. “Nonna and the cousins,” Rachel exclaimed, “celebrate Christmas.” Not to worry because Mom and Daddy were going to bring Hanukkah right along with them in a suitcase! She sat on the bed and checked out the “Hanukkah decorations, dreidels, chocolate Hanukkah gelt, and enough candles for all eight nights of Hanukkah” tucked inside. There was only one thing missing and that was a menorah.

Daddy handed Rachel a very special gift wrapped in beautiful purple paper ... a menorah! It was not just any menorah, but a very special one in which each branch was “shaped just like a person.” These people were “nine proud Maccabees, each holding a candle, including one for the shammash.” In her mind’s eye Rachel remembered the story of the Maccabees, but naturally she was in the story holding a weapon and a shield. During the days of King Antiochus there certainly weren’t any girl soldiers, but Rachel could dream. The amazing thing about the menorah was that “all nine Maccabees were girls!”

In a week they would be heading to the airport and Nonna’s. Rachel’s little backpack, which held the special menorah, would be tucked under a seat on the plane. Rachel’s eyes grew heavy and soon she was fast asleep. “Wake up, Rach,” said Daddy, “We’re landing.” All the cousins, including Nonna, were waiting to greet them and take the family to Nonna’s. There were special foods for Christmas awaiting, including “Nonna’s famous ‘panettone.’” It would be a special time because everyone would celebrate both Hanukkah and Christmas ... or would they? The suitcase full of Hanukkah necessities was there, but the special menorah with the nine proud Maccabees was on the plane!

This is a fabulously fun tale of a most unusual Hanukkah that all children will enjoy. Many families celebrate a variety of religious traditions, some at home and others with relatives. This is a tale of Rachel who is stressed that she won’t be able to celebrate them if she has to go to Nonna’s. Her parents prepare her and bring along everything Rachel will need so she can show her cousins and Nonna all about Hanukkah. The focus is on the menorah, but there’s a brief overview of Hanukkah (the Festival of Lights) in the back. The twist at the end, Nonna’s solution to the lost menorah, is quite ingenious and charming. This is the perfect tale for children who do celebrate both Hanukkah and Christmas, especially if they have to travel, bringing their traditions along with them in a backpack.

Rachel and her family are flying out to spend the holidays with Nonna and the cousins. The only problem is they aren’t celebrating Hanukkah but Christmas instead. Rachel’s parents suggest bringing Hanukkah to them. Rachel’s parents give her a surprise gift of a Hanukkah menorah. Each candle holder was a female Maccabee, which is cool since Rachel could see herself as one if she had been born in that time. Rachel puts her new menorah in her backpack and takes it on the plane. She promises to keep it safe.

Rachel slept the entire flight. She was excited to see Nonna and smell her lovely perfume. Nonna loved the design of her perfume bottles and kept them all. Once at the house the family prepared for the holiday celebrations. It was then that Rachel realized she didn’t have her backpack which meant she didn’t have her menorah. Rachel was very sad and wanted to go home. Nonna asked Rachel to tell her about her menorah and then she had an idea. What do you think Nonna will do to cheer up Rachel?

Author Karen Fisman invites families in to share the holidays. This holiday treat will add warmth to any heart and home. Parents, teachers and young readers will enjoy the festive and cheery illustrations by Martha Aviles. Readers will also learn about Hanukkah and Jewish culture.

Rachel and her family share Hanukkah with a part of her family that doesn't celebrate it!

Rachel doesn't want to go visit her daddy's family because they celebrate Christmas and she wants to celebrate Hanukkah. Her daddy assures her that they will bring Hanukkah along to share with them and that it will be fun! Her parents show her what they will bring to make Hanukkah special. Rachel accidentally leaves behind a very special part of their Hanukkah celebration on the airplane they travel on though. After Rachel explains what it is she left behind, her Nonna is able to come up with something that isn't replaceable to what she left behind but that allows them to celebrate Hanukkah on the very day it starts!

In my opinion, this story does a great job of explaining what Hanukkah is about to children. They will learn the story of what Hanukkah is about, what is done to prepare for it, a game that is played, and a food that is eaten during it. It shows that Hanukkah can be brought to other members of our family and our friends lives, if they will allow us to. The illustrations do a great job of explaining the story and I think they will help children understand it better!

Major problems solved by a kid, other kids will love that.

This is the second book in the Benji Franklin: Kid Zillionaire series. In this book Benji, a child genious, has two problems to solve. Benji, working with Sir Robert and all the gadgets he has supplied him with, has to solve the problems of an island that is suddenly experiencing earthquakes and blackouts as well as the problem of a business that has all their profits disappear by money transfers. Of course, Benji's mother still wants him in school completing all his work and assignments and he is still dealing with his nemesis Cindy. When Benji is told he must work on the last assignment at school, he recruits Cindy and the student body to help him. He solves both problems quickly and at great expense and gets well paid in the process. Children from 7 to 11 will enjoy this book as it shows a young child solving the problems of adults and the world.

Good pictures, but I wish they went into more detail...snag it while it's free....

The pictures in this book are pretty cool for kids. The format for this is a little different than most of the Baby Professor books in this series which usually have a picture with a paragraph and facts on one page. Then the next page is just a photo. This book has a picture and description of the picture on most of the pages so you get more the information than most of their books. Keep in mind though, this Baby Professor book is short like most of them. It would also be nice if these books went into more detail.

This book is very similar to another book Baby Professor offers as well, Volcanoes & Earthquakes, What & Why? : 2nd Grade Science Series: Second Grade Books (Children's Earthquake & Volcano Books). That book has even less information. You can check them both out if you can snag the while they are still free.

There are about 200 books in this ebook series that are offered in the kindle store for either free or for .99¢. You can't really go wrong with the books offered for free. There is a variety of subjects covered and most of the books follow about the same format. You can take a peek inside the books by clicking "Look Inside" and this is pretty much what you get in each book.

Overall, I do like theses books for their wonderful pictures. It would be nice if the books went into more detail but they are very basic books that I hope will get my kids interested in finding more about each subject.

I plan on keeping these books on my iPad for down time for my kids when they get bored waiting different places like the doctors office or practice for a sibling. I sometimes watch a friends 3 year old daughter and she likes to look through the pictures on my phone. I plan on showing her these books to keep her entertained. I think she will love them.

Earthquakes and volcano eruptions are natural disasters that are best faced prepared. Through this picture book, a child goes through multi-sensory learning that makes it easier to understand the intensity of quakes and volcanoes. With a picture book, a child gets to hear the stories, see the pictures, feel and even smell the pages. These create memories that make lessons stick. He loves nonfiction books so I thought these 1st grade books would be a great way to get him some quick Science lessons. These books are really short... Like 18 pages short. That is my only complaint. When we were done reading it my son just kind of looked at me like "that's it?" haha. It is a very basic book. The vocabulary is kind of big but it has really great explanations for the words. It might actually be geared more toward the Kindergarten audience. Which actually worked out great for me!
The pictures are really great. Some are very simple and others are quite detailed. My son enjoyed looking at them and asking questions and pointing out little things in each one. We are very big fans of ebooks. Just know that this book wouldn't be very good on the paperwhite (black and white version) because this book is in color and it just wouldn't look that great. We have used it on the ipad and the computer and it looks great. I love that I can load a bunch of these types of books up onto my ipad for trips and he has the ability to flip through tons of books without the huge bag of books! Having a big variety of books on hand at all times, especially education books like this are always a plus. I highly recommend you get a wide variety of the books to keep you children entertained! This book is fairly short and that works well for younger children with a short attention span. I would say this book is best for the 6-8 year old range. As with all the Baby Professor series the pictures are stunning. Adults and children alike will enjoy learning new facts. Even as an adult I enjoyed the book and wish it was longer.

The book loses a star for using the word "have" instead of the proper word "has".

It is a great little book that is delivered in bite size pieces for young children to understand and enjoy. Each page features a fact and a pertinent picture. These are a great starting point for a deeper conversation that you can tailor to their age and curiosity. I recommend reading the Kindle version on a computer or color tablet to get the full effect of the color pictures.
I just finished reading this ebook Why does it Happen: Earthquakes and Volcanoes. This book is full of large beautiful photos that are very clear and crisp and easy to see. You have a page that has a big photo along with a spot that holds information about the earthquake or volcano that is in the photo. Each page has that little bit of fun information to read and learn about the different types of disaster. My kids love learning new things and they really enjoyed sitting down and looking through this book with me. My girls can not read yet but they loved just looking at the photos and my son loved reading the bits of information that the book included. It seemed to be just the right amount of information for him. I gave this book a five out of five stars due to the following reasons. BIG, beautiful photos! There is not a ton of information but I feel like for a kids book that it is not to bad. Overall, the pictures are beautiful and it is a very nice book to look through. I would say that this book would be good for kids aged one through nine. Children to young to read will enjoy looking a the big beautiful photos and kids that are old enough to read will enjoy learning a couple bits of information about the earthquakes and volcanoes. I am glad that I got a chance to read this book to my kids.

About the Author
AUTHOR: Land Wilson developed an appreciation for nature as a boy thanks to his parents and naturalist Elizabeth Terwilliger. Having read that viewing Earth from space had a profound effect on a person's sense of responsibility to the health of our planet, Land wanted to share what he learned about the importance of protecting nature. After interviewing three Apollo astronauts, Colonel Frank Borman, Captain Eugene Cernan, and Captain Wally Schirra, Jr., he resolved to share this experience with children. It was then that Sofia's Dream was born.

ILLUSTRATOR: Sue Cornelison grew up in Libertyville, Illinois. After earning her BFA in Art Studio and Art Education from Drake University, she traveled to Florence, Italy, to further her art studies at The International School of Studio Arts. While raising a family of six children with her husband, Ross, a jazz musician, she taught high school art and pursued her love of art, design, and illustration. She has illustrated many book covers and enjoys writing and illustrating books for children.

A Modern Bedtime Story Sure to Delight

Children, parents and teachers alike will treasure this delightful fantasy, Sofia's Dream, by Land Wilson. The author's rhymes will roll off your tongue as you take an exciting journey with Sofia to discover why her new friend, the moon, is so sad.

The innovative illustrations by Sue Cornelison portray Sofia's story perfectly with soft dreamy objects. Her limited use of color urges you to look at the interesting details on every page, and gives the story a universal and classic appeal.

Teachers will appreciate how the story opens up opportunities to start discussions about the phases of the moon and Earth's limited resources. Children will be challenged to think of new ways to conserve the Earth's land, air and water.

As a retired teacher, I would recommend this book for every home and school library.

Good for story time and discussion

Sophia has a special relationship with the moon. One night the moon invites her to take a dream voyage into space to have a conversation with her friend, the sad moon. This image encourages children to think about imaginary adventures which increases their creativity.

In addition to being a delightful picture book, the text has an excellent message. When Sophia views earth from outer-space, she sees the damage we've done to our planet. The book encourages the child to think about how precious our planet is and how we can take better care of it.

I highly recommend this book. Sophia's Dream is a great read aloud book for parents or grandparents to share with their young children. The pastel illustrations are a perfect complement to the engaging rhymes. A three, four, or five year old will love this book.

This Charming Apologue Encourages Kids to Save the Earth

In Land Wilson's book, Sofia's Dream, the moon first befriends Sofia, then becomes her mentor. When she notices he is a bit blue, he invites her up into the night sky to view the earth from his point of view. He instructs her to help save the earth from further destruction by giving her planet only the best of care. Beautifully illustrated by Sue Cornelison, Sofia's dream is a lyrical story in rhyming couplets that makes a perfect bedtime story and offers parents an opportunity to further educate kids as to our responsibilities to protect our Mother Earth. I highly recommend this book for younger children who are just beginning to understand the world spans well beyond them and theirs.

Lovely.
Nicely saturated colors on the prints, and well chosen illustrations. Crips print quality.
We are more than happy that we chose this product, and would recommend it highly.
If we had to find a small detail that we aren't thrilled with, it would be that we'd prefer that February's artist had depicted the cranes as part of the background rather than overlapping the lovely , exceptionally executed main figure. That's a matter of personal taste thought, and reasonable minds may differ.
At any rate, the beauty of the other monthly selections more than makes up for how we feel about any one month's artistic choices, and we respect artist's choices in any event.
The beautiful subjects add to the enjoyment of checking a calendar date.

Great Book For the 5 Seconds of Summer Fan!

5 Seconds of Summer or 5 SOS as they are known by their fans is a band from Australia. It has four young men who have risen to stardom in the singing world. This book is packed with photographs and information about their songs, tours, and short biographies about their lives. The young men infuse the book with their personal comments about themselves, their feelings, and even positive comments about other bands they have played with or admire. After eight months of carrying her baby, a mother hippo separates herself from the herd and heads to the water. Many people might not know that “most baby hippos are born underwater.” After the baby hippo is born it heads to the surface of the water to take his or her first breath. Baby hippos are much, much larger that human babies and in fact at 100 pounds are “about as heavy as twelve” of them! Once fully grown an adult hippo can weight a whopping 8,000 pounds. Can you think of something around you that weighs that much?

Baby hippos are capable of swimming in the water and can even dive. Like other creatures, hippos stay close to their mother for a long time and “spend most of the day in the water.” If they get tired they can climb right up on their mother’s back for that nap. One very unusual thing is that when they nurse they have to “dive underwater to nurse.” They often have to surface in order to breath, but somehow it all works out. For two whole weeks the baby hippos stay in the water and later “mothers and babies go back to the herd a few weeks after the babies are born.” Can you guess how long it takes them to lean how to walk?

Growth is rapid for baby hippos, but the “mothers stop nursing their babies between six and eight months.” After the baby hippos stop nursing they begin to eat plant-based diets. Even though they are no longer dependent on their mothers for food, each baby hippo still needs her protection. Predators like lions and crocodiles wouldn’t mind having a big snack! In this book you’ll also be able to learn about when they have their own babies, the male mating process, what they do during the day, their life span, and you’ll learn many more interesting facts about baby hippos.

This is a fun book of basic facts about baby hippos that young students will learn a lot from. This book is designed for the newly independent reader and is divided into short informative chapters. The layout pops with colorful photographs with captions that provide small vignettes, further adding to the learning experience. For example, one photograph shows a calf leaving the water. We then learn that “A mother hippo won’t leave the water until her calf is strong.” In the back of the book is an index, a glossary, a pictograph depicting the “Hippo Life Cycle,” a section about the “Habitat in Focus,” some “Fun Facts,” and additional recommended book and website resources to explore. There are additional free complementary educational resources on the publisher’s website.

Beautiful pictures. The only problem I had with this ...

Beautiful pictures. The only problem I had with this calendar is that I work in a cubicle, and this was way too heavy. I can't hang it up with push pins. I ended up having to tape it up.

Great color. Interesting layout

Great color. Interesting layout. Fun to look at. The one thing I miss are those little micro calendars that show you the previous month and the next month on the same page as the current month. Over all, I just like having a Yellow Submarine calendar.
