Charlie and Georgie Oughtt have been sent to visit their Grandmother Pearl, and this troubles Charlie for three reasons. It's also a heartwarming adventure about overcoming one's fears and the unbreakable bond between siblings. Fans of Neil Gaiman's Coraline (HarperCollins, 2002) and Jonathan Auxier's The Night Gardener (Abrams, 2014) will enjoy this middle grade fantasy/horror story. Fear and Courage, in a Land of Nightmares

If you enjoyed Jason Segel's "Nightmares!", then you are going to love this slightly more literary take on a similar theme. While "Nightmares!", like many nightmare books for middle-graders, was more of an nightmare-land adventure, "Charlie and the Grandmothers" is both a darker and more liberating variation that for want of a better word is sort of a psychological thriller nightmare adventure with heart.

MILD GENERAL PREMISE SPOILER. Our hero, Charlie Oughtt, is anxious and, if truth be told, (although he represses it), that anxiety arises from his loss, at age 6, of his beloved father. While he has a loving mother and a younger sister, Georgie, who is a classic, high energy, rally-round, pistol, Charlie is just, well, timid.

The magic starts when Charlie and Georgie realize that all of the kids in town have been sent to visit their grandmothers and haven't returned. Charlie and Georgie don't have any grandmothers still living, but one day their mom, in almost a trance, announces the two siblings are leaving, immediately, to visit their grandmother at her farm. With trepidation they leave mom and find themselves in a weird, timeless, creepy, dark place that doen't look like a farm and is run by two very witchy looking/acting old ladies. From there the plot rattles along, moving quickly into a magical dream world at the center of which is a timeless and fearful evil.

Middle grade "?", you wonder. Yes and no. No gore and no really explicit violence, but a lot of danger, threat and fear. There is a build up of tension, a palpable sense of villainy, and a dreamstyle darkness, but it is all manageable and the author blends in regular bits of hope and plenty of spirited sisterly support that reassures the reader that all will end well for Charlie. That said, Charlie must conquer his fears, overcome his anxieties and phobias, and take charge of his young life, in order to prevail.

This is heady, intense stuff, and it is presented with style and craft. Literate and compelling, this was a nice find. (Please note that I found this book while browsing the local library's Kindle books, and downloaded it for free. I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)

MUST YES. MUCH RECOMMEND.

Very few stories have lines in them that I want to memorize so I can use them occasionally in conversation to make myself look witty.

This one does.

Very, very few stories make me wish I could stop and sketch portraits of the characters and try to finish reading all at the same time.

This one does.

I wish this story were longer. I want to know if the neighbors all returned and are pretending to remember nothing. I want to know where Mateus lives and if he's now trolling 20-somethings on Overwatch under the gamer tag "BadgerBrush." I want to know if there are a couple of old, twisted tree stumps in the world somewhere that are locally famous for having uncanny resemblances to boar- and frog-faced old women.

But most importantly, I will always be kind to crazy old men and women found pushing their carts and wagons along the way, smelling badly and speaking of things that don't make sense. It's not their fault, what happened to them. They were only children trying to save the world.

Entertainingly clever tale about fear and how one young boy learns to face his. Fantastical background, good, evil and 'the rest' that make up a quick-paced, page-turning read. As a grandmother-aged adult, I am not a "children's" fantasy-genre aficionado but loved the imaginative employed between the covers, greatly enhanced with whimsical illustrations. Quite enjoyable perhaps because the under-girding of truth made its self both visible and viable. Glad to discover this Portland, Oregon-based author and waiting for more!

Young listeners will relate to Kyle's growing independence, and they will also meet several rainforest animals that all share a tree. The lush and gorgeous cut-paper collages introduce Kyle as well as a red-spectacled parrot, a green and yellow whip snake, a tiger-legged monkey tree frog, and leaf cutting ants. Simple notes on sloth behavior and camouflage are included at the end. The only way to increase their numbers is by biting children, Sammy's sister does not have much time. The gang create a plan to kill Count Batula, which cat believes will release the other bats back to their normal state.

About the Author
After a childhood devouring books, Eleanor Hawken spent her teenage years at boarding school, where there was many an opportunity to tell ghost stories by torchlight. After leaving school she went to university and gained a degree in Philosophy. She then worked as a children's book editor in Bath, where she was also part of the team that established the Bath Festival of Children's Literature. Eleanor devised the fiction series Will Solvit and has written books under the pseudonym Zed Storm. In 2010 Eleanor left England and traveled the length of the Americas with a laptop; it was during this time that she wrote her book for teens, The Blue Lady, due to be published by Hot Key Books in 2013. Sammy Feral's Diaries of Weird is Eleanor's fiction series for younger readers. Eleanor now lives in North London.
John Kelly is a prolific children's book illustrator and author, as well as a digital concept artist for the film industry. Among his many books are Guess Who's Coming to Dinner and Scoop! Kelly lives in London.

Finally! A children's book for girls that is empowering and encouraging to girls to explore and embrace their intellect and talents! Math is so cool and now we can show our little girls! This is the best princess book ever. Maddie loves it and we have a blast reading it together most nights.

Another winner from this creative mother/daughter team. While the illustration and poem make this book beautifully whimsical, it also packs an important lesson. The Royal Architect can be a fantastic role model for little girls interested in math or design.

My 5 year old son and I found this to be a very enjoyable book. I appreciate this book because it is so informative, yet reads more like a story than a textbook. The story begins in the Spring as the robin builds her nest and lays her eggs. It continues as the eggs hatch, and the birds grow up. The story closes as the birds leave in late September and explains that they will return the next Spring. I feel this "Full Circle" approach is very helpful to young learners. All throughout the book this story uses new words for children to learn and very naturally weaves the definitions into the story. The illustrations are a tremendous asset as they help to reinforce the new words. There are several processes shown step by step such as the development within an egg and the building of a nest. They are clearly and delightfully explained and also very well illustrated. I sometimes come across a children's book that captures my attention, yet fails to interest my son. What value does such a book have it it fails to reach the audience it was written for? I find this is not the problem with "A Nest Full of Eggs" as it is entertaining for both adults and children, while having the substance adults would like to teach to children. It is written for children yet does not talk down to them. This book is a part of a larger series called,"Let's read and Find out Science". I have also enjoyed reading others in the series and would highly recommend investigating this series.

Delightful find for my 3yr old

I don't even know how this book got into our small collection, but my almost 4 yr old daughter was immediately captivated by the story-like narrative of how robins make a nest, lay eggs, develop, hatch and learn to fly. Also, it shows the feather of about 20 birds, pictures of them around the world, about 8 different eggs and 10 different places birds make nests (including a floating nest!) I thought these lists/iterations would leave her bored, but now I can't get past them. She wants to know them all and tries to guess when I ask her which is which. I am very impressed by the simplicity of the narrative and illustrations in this book - perfect for little minds to keep focused on. I will be looking out for other books in this series.

Great book!

This book is loved by my 2 year old. We borrowed from the library and when we returned it my 2 to asked for it constantly. It is read daily and he has started to recognize the number 8 because of it. It has a wonderful rythm and great illustrations. We happily read it together.

Firebears are firemen bears that protect and serve in their area. The book shows what life in like at the station when the bears are waiting for a fire call. The first call they go on is to rescue a kitten from a tree. The next time they are called to fire at a business. After that fire is out they are called to another fire. This one is at someone home. The firefighters get the bears out safely and put out the fire. Then it's back to the station to await the next call!

I like that the bear fire fighters in the book were shown doing more than just putting out fires. Lots of kids think that is all they do.

Yes we would. Fire safety is very important. This simple picture book is a gentle way to introduce kids to fire fighters and the jobs that they do.

Huge hit with my nephew(s)!!!!!!

I chose this book for my two-year old greatnephew, Ansel, last Christmas - he looked and tossed it aside. But now his mother tells me it is THE bed time pick! I had thought it was a great balance of pictures with just enough text, and a quick moving story, and she agrees. Apparently it is the every night choice! Now my other niece says they have had to buy a copy for the other greatnephew, Paul....in fact, she tells me my younger niece said if the house were on fire, this is the book they'd save. Of course, not to worry, as the Fire Bears would save them all first!

Great addition to our science curriculum.

I am using this book as part of my homeschool 6th grade science curriculum. This stories in this book give the student an introduction to the lives of several great inventors. I love this book because there is enough information within the stories to give the student a really good understanding of certain concepts (like creating a vacuum seal), but not so much information that it is overwhelming. While there are no specific experimental activities mentioned in this book, I believe that it is written in a way in which children and adults can easily apply some of the scientific concepts to everyday living. For example, the first chapter is about the creation of the steam engine, but after reading the text, my son was able to understand that he could create his very own vacuum in a bottle if he placed hot water in the bottle, sealed it, then placed it in a bowl of ice cold water. I love how he watched patiently for the bottle to begin to pull inward. This book is well written and to be honest, as a science lover, it is a book that I would read even if I weren't using it as part of my son's science curriculum!
