Gr 3–6—This picture book primer offers students a broad introduction to economics, but the alphabet approach is an imperfect format helped little by the illustrations. Content ranges from simple ideas such as "Loan," "Money," and "Spending" to harder concepts that include "Demand and Supply," "Goods and Services," "Needs and Wants" to much more difficult abstractions such as "Exchange Rate," "Yearly Economic Growth," and "Zero Profit Condition." The alphabetic sequence mixes up any logic that might build understanding among the various concepts, instead forcing readers to take each topic individually. The simple four-line poems contribute little besides conforming to the series format. About the Author
Educator and literacy advocate Dr. Michael Shoulders has written several books for Sleeping Bear Press including the companion title, N is for Natural State: An Arkansas Alphabet and the recently released Say Daddy! When not traveling to schools and conferences, Mike lives in Clarksville, Tennessee.
Marty Kelley is the author of seven picture book books for young readers. Also a musician, he taught second grade before becoming a full time author-illustrator. Marty Kelley lives in New Hampshire with his wife, two children, three chickens, and one duck. This is his first novel.

Any young student who is interested in learning about money and economics will enjoy this book ...

Even at a very young age, young children become aware of the value of money and how it is used. That little lemonade stand is a great way to make money! "I is for income / Income is when you get money, / usually for work you do. / it can also be for selling things / or money that's given to you." Would you rather have some of that cooooold lemonade or "free range worms" at that stand? Eeeeeeew! Lemonade please! If you're really interested in income, you can read the info on the sidebar. You can even learn a bit about budgeting your money and investing.
Ever heard of the oligopoly? Perhaps not, but once you check out this book you'll at least be able to discuss it. "O is for Oligopoly. / Oligopolies exist when only / a few companies compete. / For instance, only four companies / make most of the cereals we eat." Cool, now which would be your favorite cereal? Would you prefer the Hyper Sweet Bacon Crunch or are the Super Sugar Bops your cup of tea? Make that cereal! If you're a bit more health-conscious you might just want that Branola. On a more serious note, "In an oligopoly, sales of a specific type of product are limited to only a few companies and the buyer must pay whatever those companies think is fair." You'll learn a lot of interesting money facts in this book!
This is a fun, fabulous alphabet book about money and economics for the youngest students. Debbie and Michael Shoulders certainly know how to interest young children in dollars and cents through their inimitable verse. Each verse is accompanied by a sidebar with a “real” historical vignette about each lettered item. For example, when we check out “H is for Housing Market," we learn the difference between a buyer's and seller's market. The artwork is vibrant, lively, served up with a touch of humor. Everything about this book is very kid-friendly and beckons them to open the pages and begin to read and learn.

nice book for ages 8+ whoever is interested in exploring

we like this book very much.
It was few days ago when I was driving and chatting about raw oil price and economy. My 8-year old boy asked me what economy is. I tried my best to explain using an example of farmer and eggs. But I am sure my explanation is not that great because it was a quick answer.
Today we were in that brick-and-mortar bookseller and we found this book. Wow! It was like a the right book for the right time. So we sit down and almost finished the whole book. My 8-year old said he learned a lot that he didn't know. To be honest, I also learned something that i don't know. As the other reviewer pointed out, I had never heard of "oligopoly" before I read this book.
