I always love the Gert Weigelt dance calendars

I always love the Gert Weigelt dance calendars! The dancers are technically good (not like some ballet calendars that show poses and you kind of cringe at the positioning!). And the pictures are unusual and show the athleticism of the dancers, not the traditional "pretty ballet poses". These are interesting to look at more than for 1 small glance. Alonzo Kings Lines calendars are always fabulous too; just wasn't published anywhere this year except through his company (which I bought that calendar also!).

A Striking Vision Of The Hobbit

The official Tolkien Calendar for 2016 is a striking creation featuring dramatic illustrations from the Finnish artist Tove Jansson. Jansson, who died in 2001 aged 86, was an author and illustrator best known for her books and comic strips depicting the Moomins, who inhabited a valley which i as pleasant and peaceful as Tolkien's own Shire but beset by a wider and more dangerous outside world. In the early 1960s Jansson was asked to illustrate the Swedish edition of The Hobbit, and it is from that work that the illustrations for this calendar have been taken.

Jansson's favored technique was to use pen and ink to create etching like illustrations. With the exception of the center illustration depicting Smaug about to attack the dwarves and Bilbo on Erebor and of December's Bilbo in helmet and spear standing in front of Erebor while Smaug circles menacingly (which was the original cover illustration) all of the drawings are black and white. Many are done in great detail while others are more impressionistic. Jansson excelled at depicting landscapes,particularly water and mountains. I particularly liked July's depiction of Laketown with steps leading down to the water and March's landscape of Rivendell showing the dwarves crossing the narrow bridge. May's drawing of the goblins and wargs dancing around the burning pine trees in which the dwarves and Bilbo are cowering is appropriately eerie, as is June's depiction of Mirkwood as a labyrinth of twisted tree trunks through which the Company struggles to find a way. October and November's battle scenes are alive with action and menace. I was less impressed with the final drawing on inside back cover showing beastlike Elves with horns throwing barrels into the Forest River. Author and illustrator Brian Sibley, who provided a very informative essay on Jansson and her work for the inside front cover, mentions an unsuccessful illustration not included in this calendar of a huge Gollum towering over Bilbo.

Despite these occasional missteps Jansson did a fine job of illustrating The Hobbit, and I look forward to enjoying this calendar throughout 2016.

The 2017 Official Tolkien calendar features the artwork of Finnish artist, Tove Marika Jansson, which was originally used as the illustration of the Finnish and Swedish translations of The Hobbit. Most of the images are black & white images, which measure 10 x 14 in. ( 25 x 36 cm), which the exception of a lovely "centerfold" color plate, featuring Smaug and the dwarves and the December image, featureing Bilbo. The calendar includes an essay by renowned Tolkien scholar, Brian Sibley, entitled "From Moominland to Middle-Earth," which sheds light on the artist and her artwork. Each month also has a short excerpt from The Hobbit relating to the artwork. The calendar includes notations of usual U.S. and Canadian holidays, religions holidays, moon phases, and dates of first publication of many of Tolkien's writings.

My primary complaint is with the size of calendar. The artwork for each month extends approx 1/4 of the way up onto the top page, leaving a relative small, faint calendar which is illegible when viewing it from 6 feet away (see attached photo). If you are buying this for the artwork, by all means, go for it. If you are wanting a wall calendar that you will be able to read from across the room, look elsewhere.

Beautiful calendar with lots of locations in northern Wisconsin and Michigan taken by a local photographer I had found online. Locations include the Apostle Islands Red Cliffs, Eagle Harbor Lighthouse, a Lake Superior beach "Gitchee Gumee", Autumn back woods, two canoeing scenes, a starry night scene, a lovely sunset and a winter reflections scene. My favorite is Amnicon Falls, a park I knew well -- great to see this in the collection. All pictures are nicely done, made of high quality paper so it will last all year, and has large boxes to record dates and special events. It includes small photo inserts on each month, holidays, special days, and moon phases! I love the calendar -- Recommended! Very nice quality calendar for the money. I would order it again ...

Kaden's father has been in prison for almost as long as he can remember, but now that his dad is coming home, Kaden isn't so sure he wants to see him. I thoroughly enjoyed every page of PROMISE. From the first chapter on, I hoped Kaden would have a happy ending, but I discovered that not all stories do have happy endings. Sometimes things don't turn out the way we want them to, but despite disappointments, there is always hope for something better. Judy Young does a fantastic job with Kaden and all the friends and family in his life. I kept turning pages because I was so curious to find out what would happen next. If you want a heartwarming read that will stay with you long after you've read the last page, PROMISE is the book for you. --Laurisa White Reyes

An excellent read--highly recommended

Promise is an extremely good read for young adolescents on up to adults. It captured my attention starting on the very first page and kept a good mystery going throughout the entire book. The ending is excellent--not whitewashed sweet, not disappointingly sad, but realistic as it ties up all the various mystery threads layered throughout the book. Judy Young has written another home run of a book. I heartily recommend it.

Kaden is immediately engaging, as a reader, you become curious about his situation and wonder how he became so wounded. His solace in life is his best friend Kubla, a crow, a stoic constant in his lonely life. Then you meet his father, and his ambivalence toward responsibility is so maddening, you'll want to scream. But Kaden has his grandmother, who is incredibly quirky, but somehow just what he needs. This book

The pacing is a bit slow, and the plot unfolds in an odd sequence of events, but the ending is swift and well-crafted.

A Terrific Adventure Saving Another Galaxy by a Couple of Kids. Great Literature.

If somebody told me 20 years ago that six or eight-year-old boys and girls would be reading books of the caliber of writing of The Galaxy Pirates, or books of 300 pages, I would have called you nuts!

My, how the world has advanced even as most adults decry American education.

I have only one real negative observation. The first chapter was really slow. Readers could almost skip chapter one and miss little. But, unlike one other reviewer, I was captured in Chapter 2. Then again, I was reflecting on my own childhood and a friend and some of the comical, near life-threatening stunts we survived.

Sadly, Mike Woodall died a few years ago, but he's not forgotten. His journey was a real-life adventure in rock-and-roll that might have been inspired, in a cosmic sense, by stories of hair-raising save-a-universe Hunt For The Pyxis nature.

Honestly, if young children today are able to read literature of this caliber, America is in good hands today and tomorrow.

"I wish I could live in this book! " - my 12 year old daughter

"I really enjoyed this book! I think that there was a lot of thought put into this book, and a lot of creativity, and that's why I personally love it so much! I was of the edge of my seat the whole time I was reading because I was so excited to find out what would happen next! It's a very adventurous and imaginative book, so I think that anybody who likes adventure and intensity will love this. I really enjoyed reading or watching the characters really come to life from the pages. They are so well described and thought out and all their personalities are amazingly put together! When I was done reading I felt as if I knew them as real people. They felt so alive to me, after reading that book I just feel very inspired to go out and do something fun or adventure somewhere with friends. I really think this could be considered enjoyable to all ages I'd say around 12-13 and up due to some of the language. Overall all I can really say that I didn't enjoy about it was all the bad language they used. Because the characters come out to be so young...I didn't really expect that from them, but I guess I can't blame them...the were basically living with pirates haha. My personal favorite part is when they go to space for the first time and they get to explore everything and they just seem so astonished by their surroundings! I wish that I could live in this book. I really hope a second one comes out soon! I just know everybody will really love reading this amazing story." -my 12 year old daughter

From my perspective, I found it to be a fun book, with writing complexity suitable for a teenager. I was disappointed by the cuss words as well.

Fun adventure for middle grade boys and girls

This book has so many elements that make it a fun read for both boys and girls in the middle grade range (and also for younger children who are advanced readers).

The two main characters are best friends Emma and Herbie, so both boys and girls are able to experience the adventure vicariously through a character of their own gender. And there are sailing ships that go to distant unknown planets, sometimes sailing on the water and sometimes flying. And children going off to rescue their parents, which is always appealing to younger readers. Plus a ship crewed by orphan children, an evil queen, monkeys who build things, dragons and pirates!

Emma and Herbie are in danger but it never feels too scary for younger readers. With all the serious subject books on the market now for middle grade readers, a good dose of swashbuckling fantasy adventure just seems to hit the right spot.

This book was a great start to the trilogy and I am looking forward to the next books. I definitely recommend this.

What can be warmer and more loving than receiving a handmade gift from a creative youngster. Aimed for the pre-teens, this book contains an eclectic collection of activities, however, it should be noted that many of the projects requires adult supervision. Beginning with gift wrapping ideas, there are plans to craft gifts for school functions, beach days, ideas for jewelry decorations, floral creations, and suggestions for generating garden labels. Various types of edibles along with many other gift ideas are included. The contents are clearly outlined with the essential materials listed, the methods plainly explained with lots of added tips on how to embellish these productions. Each page is tastefully and colorfully illustrated to show how the project proceeds and what the finished product can look like. Some of the projects were a bit too simple, like showing how to wrap paper on a gift box. It is a well designed book but unfortunately, in this technologically advanced world, most of the projects included might not appeal to preteens accustomed to instant gratification. So many of the craft ideas are visually and readily available on internet sites.

Super cute and fun.

I ordered two of these for my kids. They are fun and entertaining large enough print that it doesn't anger them and simple enough for my 3 year old and not too easy that my 6 year old doesn't enjoy doing them. I would recommend this book for anyone with kiddos that enjoy color by numbers. I would but this again.

Cute little Christmas color by number book

This is super cute. My niece loves it. As the description states, it has 32 pages, so don't expect a super thick coloring book. I'm not a big fan of color-by-number books, but my niece likes them. They are good for learning to follow instructions but not so great for encouraging creativity.

Grade 2-3This is an enormous improve ment over the 1961 edition: less repeti tive, much clearer in presentation and more specific about physical phenome na. However, brevity causes some of the explanations to be oversimplified, and some further explanations may be necessary. The illustrations are better, featuring clear, colorful and sometimes mildly silly scenes that add some play fulness. The simple science experiment remains from the old edition, and Bran ley has included a new discussion of day and night on the moon, as well as a photo of our planet taken from space. Gail Gibbons' Sun Up, Sun Down (HBJ, 1983) is a broader, shallower treatment.John Peters, New York Public Library

Very good early elementary science book

If your child is interested in science, they will enjoy this book. It combines colorful drawings with actual photographs to explane the earth's rotation in a simple, understandable way. It is also a part of the Harcourt reading series for second grade, and a wonderful addition to your home library.
