Bodoni or Bauhaus, it's a yearlong exploration of the finer points of a dozen iconic typefaces, including the one that gave the Declaration of Independence its distinctive gravitas. Each month introduces a new font, then decodes it by outlining its defining features, illustrating its range of iterations, and illuminating its history and development. Plenty of room on this calendar
By Jane Berlin
I bought this last year too. Has plenty of room for copy on each day. A large calendar...it opens both sides for one month. Also if you're a type nut it's got an OK grouping of typefaces. It would be nice if every year it really changed the look up some. They sort of look the same each year and a real designer could make the type more interesting.

Love this calendar
By Michael Mondragon
As a type nerd I get this calendar every year. It never disappoints. Another great benefit is that every year the fonts are different, so as I collect them I actually have a great font resource.

The Whale that Fell in Love with a Submarine, by Akiyuki Nosaka

A whale falls in love with a military submarine, and dies courting her; a mother caught in a fire following a bombing gives all her body's water to save her son, and her desiccated form turns into a kite; a wolf rescues a sick child abandoned by her parents, only to die himself at the hand of men. However, bunkers can also become real homes, a small Japanese girl and an American POW briefly understand each other and a miraculous tree feeds starving children...
This is war, no doubt, but told by someone who understands how children truly experience war and its aftermath - the bombings and parents' deaths, the life of orphans who roam the streets, the starvation and blind violence in a society beyond destruction.
Akiyuki Nosaka remembers what it was like to be a child caught in war-torn Japan in 1945, and he retells his experiences in this collection of powerful and beautifully expressive stories for children.

Review
'One can only be shaken by these cruel and magnificent tales, which are also the most eloquent plea for peace imaginable' - L'Express

About the Author
Akiyuki Nosaka lost his mother at birth and was immediately entrusted into care by his father - a fact which he discovered only when his adoptive parents were killed in the American bombing of Kobe. At the age of 14, orphaned and alone in war-ravaged Japan, he saw his younger sister starve to death. He was sent to prison for stealing and involvement in the black market; after spending some time studying at university, he left to make a living doing odd jobs, including dog-washing and selling his own blood. He has made his name as a writer, journalist, lyricist, singer, model and rugby club manager, and joined the High Chamber of the Japanese Diet in 1983. Nosaka has written nearly 100 books, both fiction and non-fiction; his work is violent, both tragic and comical. War Stories for Children and Graves of the Fireflies were both inspired by his own childhood, and very movingly depict the effect of war on Japanese - and any - society. Nosaka is extremely well known in Japan today, not just as a writer, but also as a TV personality, scriptwriter, songwriter, comedian, singer and even politician. He suffered a stroke in 2003 but still writes for newspapers and radio.

Translated from the Japanese by Ginny Tapley Takemori.

The Whale that Fell in Love with a Submarine
By J. Hamby
Okay. I liked it. Really liked it. But I'm not sure what kids would think. What age to introduce these tales to.

For they are grim. Dire. Poignant and bleak. There are no happy endings here. But thoughtful ones that explore the consequences of war in small vignettes focusing mostly on children in some way. War and all its horrors, immediate and lingering, are explored here. Sometimes almost whimsically -- as in the title tale-- but also with an underlying gruesome toll. And sometimes with a rather blatant and abrupt one. In ways I can see upsetting a child or even giving them nightmares.

The other side of these tales is the that they are thoughtful. They are simplistic without being too simple. For the right child I can see an appeal. I can see material they can grasp and work with that doesn't not coddle and despite some of the brutal truths, does not mislead or talk down to children whose knowledge of the outside world might surprise their parents.

But despite any reservations I might have for young readers, in the end I have no doubt all books to a certain age, should be monitored and vetted by parents. And I think many of these short and bittersweet tales hold truths all adults would find useful. So buy the book. Read it for yourself and introduce it to your child as you see fit. Eventually it will be a book they grow into and grow with.

Penelope "channels the quirkiness of Ramona Quimby!"—Shelf Awareness

Penelope Crumb is not having a very good week. First she accidentally comes to school dressed as an elephant (dress like an animal day is next week), and then in gym class she's forced to square dance. With a boy who is known as Lippy Gordon because of how sweaty his lip is. All the time. Penelope is mortified. And then is extra mortified when she discovers that Lippy doesn't want to dance with her either!

When Grandpa tells Penelope that he sings to the moon when he’s having trouble, Penelope grabs onto this plan. But sometimes you need more than the moon to fix things.

Another sweet and funny Penelope book. Equal parts humor and heart, this is a character not to be missed. Perfect for fans of Ramona Quimby, Judy Moody and Clementine, and for fans who have just outgrown Junie B. Jones and Katie Kazoo.

Chapter 1

Today I am an elephant. In a costume that I made all by myself out of my mom’s old gray sweat suit stuffed with pillows because it’s Be an Animal Day at school. I painted a lion on the back of the shirt because when you’re in the fourth grade you never know what’s going to leap out at you from behind the bushes.

As I put on my paper-towel-tube elephant nose, plump my ears, and paint my hair and face gray, I think how nice it is to be something else in the mirror for a change. When my mom pokes her head in my room and tells me I’m going to be late and asks what’s the deal with the lion, I say, “Portwaller Elementary can be a real jungle.”

Walking to school from our apartment is only a couple of blocks, but when you’re an elephant, for some reason, it seems to take a long time to get there. Plus there’s all the strange looks you get on the way. The kind of looks that say Do You Know What You Look Like? I just smile at them in a way that means Yes Indeed I Am Supposed to Look This Way, I’ve Done So on Purpose And Not by Accident. More than a couple of people shout at me and offer me peanuts, but I just pretend they are the strange ones. I’m an excellent pretender.

But when I finally get to Portwaller Elementary, I know something is wrong as soon as I step inside: I’m the only animal at the zoo.

All of the other kids, and I mean ALL of them, are in normal, everyday school kind of clothes without a single tail or paw or beak. I start to elephant-sweat as everybody begins to stare at me, and when I wipe my forehead, some of the gray paint comes off on my fingers. Good gravy.

I see my used-to-be-best-friend, Patsy Cline Roberta Watson, at the drinking fountain. We’re still friends, just not best ones anymore, mostly because of a girl called Vera Bogg who doesn’t wear anything but pink. Which is something I will never understand.

When I go up to Patsy Cline, my elephant nose brushes against her hair and she screams and spits water all down her shirt. I tell her it’s me, it’s me, Penelope Crumb, but her shirt is already soaked and she’s got a look on her face that says Don’t You Know I’m Allergic to Things with Tails?

“Why aren’t you dressed like an animal?” I say.

Then she says, “The real question is why are you?”

And when I remind her about Be an Animal Day, she shakes her head at me and says this: “You’ve got the date wrong, Penelope. It’s two Mondays from now. And did you paint your hair?”

“No, it’s today,” I tell her.

“I’m sure that it’s not,” she says.

“No,” I say, “today.” Because it is. It has to be.

Patsy Cline turns me around by the shoulders so I can see all the kids without tails, and then she says: “Do you see anyone else that looks like you?”

This is a trick question, of course, because even if I wasn’t dressed like an elephant I wouldn’t see anybody that looks like me. I wouldn’t. For one thing, my big nose.

Even so, as I look at everybody else, I see that Patsy Cline has a point. Good gravy, I’m the only elephant in the room.

I take off my elephant nose and look down at the rest of me. Gray, wrinkly, pillowy. I tell Patsy Cline that it could be worse, that I was thinking about being an ostrich, but then she points to my face and says, “What are you going to do about that? And your . . .”

But before she can finish, the bell rings and we’re supposed to be in Miss Stunkel’s classroom. “Come on,” she says, pulling at my sleeve, “we’re going to get hollered at.”

But hollering isn’t what worries me. It’s showing up in Miss Stunkel’s class all gray in the face and elephanty on a Regular Day and Miss Stunkel will say that I’m Quite the Riotous Disruption and send another note home. I’m pretty sure.

Patsy Cline doesn’t want to help, I can tell. But I’m still holding on to her arm, and I guess she figures she doesn’t have much choice, seeing how I’m not letting go, so she pushes down the handle to the water fountain and shoves my head into the stream. “Wash it off quick,” she tells me.

I splash the water on my face and scrub with my hands until I see the gray paint begin to pool around the drain. Then I lift out my drippy head, keeping my eyes shut. “Did I get it off?”

“Some of it,” says Patsy Cline. “But there’s a good bit left. You need some soap. And a scrub brush. And there’s no time to get you to the bathroom.”

“I’ve got paint in my eyes,” I say, after opening and then shutting them real fast.

“You need a towel.”

I lean in toward her so she can dry my face, but I’m still drippy when she says, “I don’t have a towel. Why would I have a towel?”

So, I have no choice but to take one of the pillows from my shirt and wipe my face with it. And when I’m done, Patsy Cline looks me over and says, “Oh dear.” Which is not what I was hoping for. Then she tells me we’ve got to go pronto and pulls me down the hall to Miss Stunkel’s classroom.

When we get there, I wonder if there is ever a place an elephant can hide. If there is, it isn’t in Miss Stunkel’s classroom, because I can feel everybody’s eyeballs on me, even Angus Meeker, who lives to get me in trouble.

Vera Bogg: “Why are you dressed like a fat chimney sweep?”

Angus Meeker: “This is going to be good.”

Patsy Cline: “It’s just a mix-up. She’s an elephant. Chimney sweeps don’t have tails. Show her your tail, Penelope.”

Me: “Patsy Cline, you are not helping.”

All the while, Miss Stunkel is watching me from the front of the room while she pets the Monday lizard pin that hangs from her sweater. But to my surprise, she doesn’t say anything to me about my painted face or hair, my stained and wrinkly gray sweat suit, or my tail. Instead, she just says, “Penelope Crumb and Patsy Cline, you do know that when the bell rings I expect you to be in your seats?”

Me and Patsy Cline say that we do indeed and that we’re awful sorry. And then Miss Stunkel tells us, not just me and Patsy Cline, but tells everybody, to open our science books so we can learn about the solar system. The solar system! Miss Stunkel’s going to talk about planets and moons, thank lucky stars, and doesn’t have a thing to say about Penelope Crumb, Riotous Disruptor.

I pull out my science book from my desk with a smile on my gray mess of a face, eager to hear about stardust or moon craters or whatever outer spaciness that Miss Stunkel wants to make us learn. But then, I get to wondering why it is that Miss Stunkel hasn’t said anything about Elephant Me. It’s not that I want her to, believe me. I don’t. But because she hasn’t, it starts me thinking: Why?

Miss Stunkel tells us to read the paragraph in our books called “Interesting Moon Factoids.” After the diameter, mass, and average distance from Earth, there is one interesting factoid that gets my attention:

There is no dark side of the moon. Both sides of the moon get the same amount of sunlight, but only one side of the moon is ever visible from Earth.

Right away I get to thinking how it doesn’t seem fair that we only get to see one side of the moon from here. There’s more to the moon than just that one side, and what if it was having a bad day or got its Mondays mixed up and that’s all that people could see and not any of the good stuff.

Miss Stunkel must be able to tell what I’m thinking somehow because she says, “Is there a problem, Penelope?”

I say, “Not really a problem, I guess. I was just wondering something.”

“Let’s hear it,” she says.

I shake my head and look at everyone else, who is already looking back at me. “Well . . .”

“Come on now,” Miss Stunkel says. “I’m sure we’d all like to hear.”

Patsy Cline gives me a look that says I’m Sure You Should Keep Your Mouth Shut. But I can’t help it, I have to know why Miss Stunkel hasn’t said anything about me being an elephant. “Well, I was just wondering if you noticed that I’m not myself today.”

Miss Stunkel says that as a matter of fact she did.

“Oh,” I say.

“Is there something else, Penelope?”

“And I was also wondering,” I say, “why you didn’t say anything.”

Patsy Cline puts her head on her desk.

Miss Stunkel takes a deep breath, and her eyeballs bounce up and down like she’s trying to search her brains for just the right words. She starts to say something a couple of times but then stops herself. Finally, she says, “Let’s just say that this,” and then she waggles her finger at me, the one that looks like a boiled chicken leg dipped in nail polish, the one that has been known to cause night terrors, “whatever this is called, falls within what I have come to expect of you, Penelope Crumb.”

I’m not sure what that means exactly, but it sounds pretty bad. And I wish that lion on the back of my shirt would wake up and show its teeth or something. But it doesn’t.

A truly delightful book about differences and self-esteem
By Dargrace
Penelope is a unique and truly blessed young girl. She has a delightfully odd family and your typical weird school life, but when the curriculum involves learning to square dance, well, count her out. Hugo is a larger boy with a sweaty upper lip. This smart young man is ridiculed and about to become Penelope's dancing partner. Will they be able to work together and be friends or will the differences of these kids be enough to cause the group to lose out on the award for best group dance? I really enjoyed this children's book. I remembered my own angst over square dancing and had to smile at the antics of these kids. It wasn't until the end that I realized the publisher is Penguin books. They have a reputation for fine literature and I think this is worthy of that distinction. Penelope Crumb is a character I won't easily forget.

A special book from a gifted author
By Jonathan R.
This is a very well-conceived and crafted novel that me and my kids (age 7 and 10) really enjoyed. Beyond the attractive quirkiness of the main character, the author blends in rich and provocative insights into human relations, personal growth, ethics, compassion, and coping with the challenges of life. Man I love this book, and have deep respect for the author. Well done Ms. Stout!

From the Author
The Bridge Across The River is manufactured by Createspace publications, an imprint of the Amazon Corporation.  My wife and I have purchased no less than two dozen of these books for our friends and relatives, and except for one all were in excellent condition when they arrived.  (We received one copy with some torn pages, and after contacting Createspace/Amazon the book was replaced promptly free of charge.  They did not even ask for us to return the defective book to them.)  I am quite pleased with the quality of this book, and with the service provided to me by Createspace and Amazon.  Thank you to everyone who participated in the creation of this book, most especially my best friend, Tana Halvorsen.

About the Author
As a child and young adult, Shepherd Thorleif Halvorsen read all of the classic books of nursery rhymes and poetry that he could find, including the entire collections of Dr. Seuss and Shel Silverstein.  It only made sense that one day he would write his own material, and The Bridge Across The River is a collection of his best efforts thus far.  Essentially, The Bridge Across The River is intended to make children laugh - and when they laugh they are smiling, and when they are smiling they are happy.  And the creation of happiness is the main goal of this author and this book.

We like this book a lot.
By E. Ervin
I like this book a lot for one on one with little people. I do not recommend it for group reading as everybody wants to lift the flaps and that might cause problems. Other than that, it is a very cute and entertaining book. We love Halloween books at my house. This one is just a lot of fun and we are using it a lot during this season. Our little folks like it a lot and request it often. Good book.

This book is adorable, creative, and so fun! Totally puts us all in the Halloween spirit and entertains my toddler (20mos) endlessly at the moment. We've had the book for a week now and he's wanted to play with it everyday. It's well made and has a good number of things to flip on each page. I'm impressed :). (For what it's worth, I bought this at my local bookstore.)

Entertained and helped my 2 year old learn about Halloween. I had to open them the first time, but after that she caught on pretty quick and after about a month there is only one flap that has been torn off and had to be taped back on. She calls all skeletons Bob now in Skelly Bob's honor.

"My name is Aviva, not Amoeba!" shouts Aviva at her teasing classmates. Aviva is determined to change her name until she discovers where her name comes from and why her parents chose that special name for her.

From School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2—Aviva is tired of being teased about her name. At school she is called Viva la France or, even worse, amoeba. So she takes matters into her own hands and decides to change her name to Emily. Her mother takes the change in stride, calling her daughter Emily as they make chicken soup, read a book, and look at the stars. All the while, Aviva/Emily's mom tells stories of her own grandmother Ada, who taught her to cook, to sew, to read, and so much more. At bedtime, the little girl finally asks, "Why did you name me Aviva, anyway?" Her parents explain the Jewish tradition of naming a baby after beloved family or friends who are no longer living. Grandma Ada did not live to meet her great-granddaughter, but she lives on in the choice of the name Aviva, which was her Hebrew name. As she falls asleep, Aviva decides that she is indeed Aviva, proud of her name and her heritage. Many Jewish children are curious about the origin of their names and wonder why they are unusual or old fashioned. Newman's clear and rich narrative explains the custom with warmth and appreciation for tradition. The illustrations, depicting both past and present, are a bit cartoonish for the quality of the text, but they help support the narrative. VERDICT A recommended purchase for all Judaic collections.—Martha Link Yesowitch, Charlotte Mecklenburg Library, NC

This is a touching tale that will let young children know just how special they are ...
By Deb
Aviva had a perfectly nice name, but no one ever seemed to use it, like ever. “Bye, Amoeba!” Danny yelled to her as he ran by. No, she certainly wasn’t an amoeba and then there was Josette. “Aur revoir, Viva La France,” she yelled out to Aviva as she passed by. Certainly her name wasn’t Viva La France and no she didn’t look like one. No one would bother her if she climbed the monkey bars and hung upside down and so Aviva did just that. Later she sat on the swing waiting for Mommy and Lulu, her dog, to show up.

“Ready to go, Aviva?” Mommy asked as she stroked her cheek. Aviva put her on ignore too because she didn’t want to be an amoeba, a Viva La France, or an Aviva for that matter. “My name isn’t Aviva,” she told her Mommy. “My name is Emily” and so it was. Emily and Mommy walked up the street, scattering the fallen leaves and glancing in the shop windows as they walked hand-in-hand. Why on earth did Mommy and Daddy name her Aviva anyway? Mommy didn’t answer right away, but then began to talk to Emily once they got home.

Chop, chop, chop! Mommy was making some soup and there were carrots and celery to go into the pot. “Do you know who taught me to make soup, Emily?” Of course it was Grandma Ada! Emily lost a button on her pink sweater and while the soup was simmering on the stove, Mommy began to sew. “Do you know who taught me to sew?” Mommy asked Emily. Of course it was Grandma Ada! Mommy began to tell Emily all about Grandma Ada and how she worked in a factory when she was only ten. Grandma Ada’s “stitches were as fine as spider webs,” but what did that have to do with her name?

This is a delightfully charming tale about Aviva, a little girl who hated her name. Many children don’t like their names for one reason or another, sometimes because other people tease them. Aviva didn’t realize just how special her name was until Mommy told her all the wonderful things about Grandma Ada, her namesake. The tale is very special, poignant and perfect for a little one who doesn’t like their name or something else about themselves. Rather than dismiss Aviva and her request to be called ‘Emily,’ her mother allows her the freedom to do so. The artwork is beautiful and meshes perfectly with the tale. This is a touching tale that will let young children know just how special they are.
