K-Gr 2—Newlyweds Estrella and Yosef journey from their remote village in the Atlas Mountains to the big city of Casablanca. Relatives help them to set up a small apartment and give Yosef a job selling carpets in the family's shop. After he leaves for his first day of work, Estrella walks to the market. When she returns to her new apartment, she is shocked to see a strange, beautiful woman inside. She runs screaming out of the house, distraught that her husband has taken another wife. Neighbors instruct her to go to the rabbi for advice. When Yosef returns home from work and enters the apartment, he is surprised to see a handsome man standing in the middle of the room. Assuming that his wife has found another husband, he, too, rushes to the rabbi for advice. Dumfounded by these two reports, the rabbi goes to the apartment to see for himself. When he opens the door, he sees another rabbi standing in the apartment. Finally, the neighbors figure out what is going on. While Estrella and Yosef were out, Estrella's cousins had brought a wardrobe with a mirror to the apartment as a gift for the couple. Having never seen a mirror, Estrella, Yosef, and even the rabbi mistake their own reflections for someone else. Once everything is cleared up, the young couple live happily ever after. Stylized acrylic illustrations in browns and jewel tones depict the exotic setting, clothing, and architecture of 19th- or early 20th-century Morocco. Readers may delight in the fact that they are able to solve the mystery before the rabbi. However, the slight story fails to provide readers with any historical context or insight into the Jewish community of Casablanca. Polona Kosec was born in Ljubljana on a warm rainy day. Since the year 2006 she works as a freelance artist/illustrator. In 2009 she completed post-graduate qualification (a Master of Arts degree programme) at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana. She likes working with other people and has collaborated with a number of publishing houses and authors through the years. She does illustrations and character design for children's books and children's magazines as well as short commercial animation.

The Atlas Mountains of Morocco were alive with joy when Estrella and Yosef joined hands in marriage. It should have been a joyous time, but the couple’s eyes grew sad and teary as they looked at one another. “Mazal bueno!” Yes, everyone wished them good luck, but the only income they had was the money Yosef made “selling nuts and sheep.” They would be happy, but no, it wouldn’t be enough money for the two of them. Soon good news came to the village when Estrella’s uncle wrote to them. “Send the young couple to Casablanca. Yosef will work in my carpet shop.” It should have been a blessing, but worry still clouded their faces.
How could they leave all they knew to move to an small apartment in a city? Soon Estrella and Yosef were in Casablanca setting up their new home. So magnificent because there were “two whole rooms just for them!” Gone were the dirt floors and a new life was to be had. Estrella soon became sad because the women were so much more beautiful than she. The cousins carried a wardrobe “step by step, up to the new couple’s apartment.” Carvings curled around the top and bottom and the doors were inlaid with mirrors. What luck!
When Estrella returned home, she became frightened when she saw a “strange, beautiful woman” in her apartment. “Weelie, weelie, my husband has taken another wife.” The others pointed the way to the rabbi for he would know what to do. Yosef was pleased that he had a job selling carpets, for their fortunes would increase, but he felt let down. “Ah, a mountain Jew,” exclaimed a man, “I can tell just by looking at you.” To make things worse, when he returned he found a strange man in their room. Estrella and Yosef were in trouble in the big city, but could the rabbi help them out of this mess?
This is the humorous tale of two young, married mountain Jews who head to the big city of Casablanca. Of course Estrella and Yosef were what many would call a couple of country bumpkins. They were so naïve, they had never even seen a mirror. The wise old rabbi, who was not much wiser than they were, failed to see his own reflection in the mirror as well. The tale has a wonderful folktale feel, so realistic I actually thought I was reading a retold tale. The artwork is beautifully rendered and complements this tale perfectly. This is a very unique, tale that is great fun and would be a perfect tale to read during circle or storytime.
