About the Author
Mahvash Shahegh is an author, educator, librarian, researcher, and translator who taught at John Hopkins University until her recent retirement. She earned a PhD in Persian language and literature in Iran, with her dissertation being on “The Trace of Fairies in Persian Stories and Literature.” She is the author of a two-volume Persian language book for college students, co-authored with two of her colleagues, titled Learning Persian. She lives in Elkridge, MD.
Claire Ewart is an award-winning author and illustrator of children's books. Her most recent book is The Olive Tree by Elsa Marston. In addition to illustrating books by such well-known authors as Paul Fleischman and Tomie dePaola, she has also written and illustrated several of her own books, including One Cold Night, The Giant, and Fossil. Claire has received the Celebrate Literacy Award from the International Reading Association, while her work as an illustrator has been included on Best Book lists from School Library Journal and Parent's Magazine. Her titles have also appeared on the PBS television shows Reading Rainbow and Storytime. Claire lives in Fort Wayne, IN.

A Musician in Ancient Persia

"The Green Musician" is the latest children's book from Wisdom Tales Press, a publisher which specializes in spiritual or ethically-themed books for children from cultures around the world. Intended for children of six and up, this picture book retells a Persian story written around 1000 AD about a musician named Barbad, a historical character who lived around 600 AD and who served as chief minstrel in the king's court.
In this retelling, the Persian king, Khosrow, loves music and has an in-court musician with whom he is pleased. Barbad lives in a distant part of the realm and wishes to earn King Khosrow's favor. He travels to the court to play for the king, but the chief minstrel throws obstacles in his way. Barbad finally secures access to the king through the garden on a new spring day. He camouflages himself and his lute in green and plays and sings to the king from the trees. When the king becomes enamored with Barbad's music, he discovers his identity, learns his story, and makes Barbad his chief minstrel at the palace. The story concludes: "Nothing could stop [Barbad] from pursuing his dreams".
The retelling is done with a lovely touch that establishes the legendary, ancient character of the story. It opens with the stock phrase "once upon a time" and proceeds by simple oral connectives, for example, "Now, King Khosrow loved music and song."; "In a distant part of the kingdom there lived ...."'
"And so Barbad left home"; "So the promised day arrived".
The story is written by Mahvash Shangeh, a retired educator at Johns Hopkins University who holds a PhD in Persian language and literature in Iran. She has written a book for college students studying Persian. It is inspiring that this retired scholar shares her love for this ancient culture with children. Claire Ewart's beautiful pastel illustrations to the book add equally to the archaic, fairy-tale atmosphere of the story. Ewart is a well-known illustrator; and I am familiar with her work through her illustrations of an earlier Wisdom Tales Press book, "The Olive Tree".
"The Green Musician" is a lovely book for children and it may enchant parents, teachers, and other adults as well. It enchanted me. Wisdom Tales Press kindly sent me a copy of this book to review.

A fun and educational book

Received the book a couple of days earlier than promised.
Robin Friedman and Debbie have described beautifully this lovely book. It will become definitely a favourite of children with its simple language and great paintings of Claire Evart. However there is a more educational aspect to this book. The story coming from a very far away country will draw the attention of the children not to an imaginary kingdom but will introduce them to an empire that has existed for thousands of years and its greatest epic poet Ferdowsi. The Cylinder of Cyrus the Great (ca. 530 BC) is undoubtedly a witness for the culture and the recorded human rights idea in that country even some 2500 years before the establishment of the United Nations.
I hope to see soon more books by Mahvash Shahegh.

Nicely retold and beautifully illustrated, but...

This book fits very nicely with Wisdom Press’s other children’s books. It is an intercultural folktale with a “moral” of the story typical of such folk tales. It is beautifully illustrated in warm, pleasant hues and is printed on nice thick, glossy paper with a lovely new book scent.
This particular story is the Persian folk tale of the musician Barbad who yearns to play for the king and live in the king’s sumptuous palace and send money back to support his family. But there is only one king’s musician and if the current musician, Sarkash, gets his way, Barbad will never get his chance to play for the king – Sarkash conspires with the palace guards to keep Barbad from the king’s presence. But Barbad is an intrepid soul and he does not give up easily.
This is, of course, a story about pursuing one’s dreams and is meant to be a triumphal, feel-good story. But nonetheless, I found myself feeling a bit sad at the end. I realize that Mahvash Shangeh is simply retelling an age-old folk tale and isn’t really at liberty to change the story, but I found myself wondering why does it have to be that way? Why does the king, living in such sumptuous luxury, only share such bounty with just one musician? Why set up a competition that only one can win – and thereby create jealousy and spite – when he himself would benefit from having many musicians available to play for him? Each one would bring his own style and beauty and they could all surround the palace with constant harmony, not to mention, they could all support their families. While I was not sorry to see the spiteful Sarkash defeated – as we know he will be – I had to wonder if Barbad would simply take his place and perhaps develop the same possessive spitefulness?
I get it, that’s the way things were. But this book isn’t simply meant as a history lesson, it is meant for modern inspiration in our modern world. Pursuing our dreams and goals is certainly worthy encouragement for our children. But shouldn’t we also encourage sharing of bounty, cooperation and harmony?
Nonetheless, I recommend this book for its simple beauty and quality.
