I Thought This Was a Bear Book, by Tara Lazar

When an alien crashes into the story of "The Three Bears," it's a laugh-out-loud adventure and a classic storybook mash-up!

After an unfortunate bookcase collapse, Alien suddenly finds himself jolted out of his story and into a very strange world, complete with talking bears. Desperate to return to his book, Alien asks the Bear family for help so he can get back to his story and save his beloved Planet Zero from total destruction before it's too late.

Mama Bear and Papa Bear try all kinds of zany contraptions (with some help from their nemesis, Goldilocks) without much luck. Baby Bear might have the perfect solution to get the Alien out of the woods and back to his planet...but will anyone listen to the littlest voice in the story?

Review
Familiar storybook characters go off-topic in an off-kilter literary mashup that originates with two books tumbling off a child's shelf in the night. Amid billowing pink exhaust, a spacecraft barrels out of one volume and crashes on a page with the "three bears" of Goldilocks fame. With its wandering cast of characters, overlapping stories, and inside jokes aimed at those well-versed in nursery rhymes and fairy tales, this "bear book" reveals itself as a book about books.~ Publisher's Weekly

From the Author
This story began with the intention of inserting a character where he did not belong. I chose an alien because he's already foreign! Since I love teddy bears (and they are quite the furry, cuddly opposite of a green alien), I made bears the main characters. Then when Goldilocks sneakily appeared in my manuscript, I knew this was a story about books clashing on the shelf. I wrote this book with my own childhood love of fairytales and nursery rhymes in mind. I hope you and your children love it, too.

From the Inside Flap
ONCE UPON A TIME, THERE WERE THREE LITTLE BEARS...AND AN ALIEN? After an unfortunate bookshelf mix-up, Alien suddenly finds himself tumbling out of his pages with a zark, zoot and zinder, and into a very strange world, complete with a talking bear family. And Alien must return to his book before his beloved Planet Zero is destroyed! They try crazy catapults, creaky chairs, and bouncy springs, but nothing is "just right". Baby Bear may have the perfect solution to get an alien out of the woods and back to is planet...but will anyone listen to the littlest voice in the story?

I'd recommend this for 6-8 year olds
By JEN
I received a review copy of this book, and I want to give it an honest review.
Some of the great qualities of this book are breaking down the 4th wall and how the story is told in dialogue. I also love the cuddly, soft-toned illustrations.

I enjoyed this book, but just couldn't give it a Five Star. My 5yro usually reads books like this again and again, but this cute book was a 'one and done' for him. My 8yro, however, said "I just love it."

The upside is my 8yro loved it. The downside is that she doesn't like reading picture books more than once.

So I recommend this book especially for classrooms and libraries whose patrons are ages 6-8.

Please note that I have not received any compensation for this review, and the review copy I received was not in exchange for this review.

Love this story!
By This Kid Reviews Books
Why I liked this book- Ms. Lazar is a great picture book writer. (I reviewed her picture book “The Monstore” HERE.) I love the story idea for this book! It will have kids and adults giggling uncontrollably! Prince Zilch, the Alien, is a funny character who needs to get back to Planet Zero to save it from ultimate destruction! He seems so out of place in the Bear’s book! Mr. Davies’ illustrations are spot on and fit perfectly into the story! The writing was funny and clever. This is the kind of book that you can read over and over again. This story is perfect for bed times, and any times!
*NOTE* I got a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

A creative way to think outside of the book and have fun with language!
By Carrie Charley Brown
Creativity abounds as Prince Zilch, lost alien, leads this dialogue-driven story out of The Three Bears book and back toward page 27 of his own story. Those who love the Zzz sound will adore Prince Zilch's vocabulary from Zoopfoof to zark, zoot, zinder. Zilch's voice carries into rich language devices as seen in "formidable fuzzy forms" and a humorous play on words. A real surprise awaits the reader at the end as they help put Zilch back where he belongs.
