The story is fun and accessible

Sadie, Ori, and the Blue Blanket is a departure from most of Rabbi Korngold’s other children’s books, which tend to focus on Sadie and Ori learning about specific Jewish holidays or experiences. In this, her latest book, the action instead begins with the children’s beloved grandmother knitting a “together blanket” upon Sadie’s birth. From then on, each page details Grandma’s adventures with her growing grandchildren – teaching them the four questions at Passover as she cooks for the seder, playing ball with them, helping them build a succah, and reading to them wrapped in the “together blanket”. But as time goes on, Grandma is able to do less and less until one day, Sadie and Ori realize they must try to give back to one who has always given so much to them.
The story is fun and accessible, with bright, playful illustrations by Julie Fortenberry. With the text, Rabbi Korngold achieves an impressive balancing act of introducing a confusing, often frightening subject for children – aging grandparents – and making it a springboard for a child’s own growing moral maturity. Sadie, Ori, and the Blue Blanket teaches children – and all of us – that the changes in life are natural and nothing to be scared of, especially if those we care about are there to ease the transition. #Readukkah

The perfect book to help young children learn about the changing seasons of life ...

Click, click, click went the knitting needles and Grandma knit a “soft blue blanket the color of the sky.” It was a special blanket Grandma was knitting for baby Sadie, their “Together blanket.” Grandma and baby Sadie smiled at each other as they rocked back and forth in their rocking chair. The soft blue blanket was just enough to keep them both warm and cozy. At the Passover seder there was the Together blanket in the back of Sadie’s highchair, at a place right next to Grandma at the table. The seasons began to pass and the Together blanket was always with them.
The Together blanket was there during Hanukkah and during Purim as “Sadie helped Grandma bake hamantaschen and deliver them to friends.” When Ori was born, click, click, click went the knitting needles and “Grandma made the soft blue blanket big enough to cover all three of them.” The Together blanket was even big enough to cover all of them as they snuggled in that rocker to read stories. This year at the Passover seder there was the Together blanket in the back of Ori’s highchair, at a place right next to Grandma at the table. Of course Sadie was right there on the other side of Grandma!
The Together blanket was there with them when they built “grand cities out of wooden blocks” on the floor and rested on the back of the Adirondack chair when they played outside. Grandma was always with Sadie and Ori as was the Together blanket. It was even there when “Grandma taught Sadie and Ori how to spin the dreidel.” As the years passed Sadie and Ori grew busier as they grew, but “somehow Grandma could do less and less.” There were so many things they wanted to do, but Grandma was changing. Was there some way the Together blanket could bring them back together again?
This is a delightfully charming, poignant tale of a very special blue Together blanket families will cherish. I loved how this tale was woven around these very special blue blanket, a blanket that somehow was an integral part of the family. Sadie and Ori were a very special part of Grandma’s life. As the book went on they discovered that Grandma simply couldn’t participate in their lives like she once did, something that happens in real life. Many children will learn through this book that aging and slowing down is a part of life and is to be expected. Grandma is changing, but she’s still Grandma and is an integral part of the family. The artwork is busy, bright, and totally meshes with the tale. Impressive and certainly a must have to let young children know about the changing seasons of life.

Bittersweet story about family and traditions

Oh goodness, this is a tear jerker! I absolutely love the wonderful relationship between Sadie, Ori, and their grandmother. So sweet, so genuine, and so easy to relate to! Grandma does everything with them- from teaching them the throw and catch a ball to cooking for the Seder meal. As Sadie and Ori grow bigger and stronger though, Grandma gets older too and starts to slow down. Though they need to adjust how they spend time with her, they learn that it is the time spent that is important.
This book will have you hugging your loved ones a little tighter and slowing down a bit to appreciate a few extra minutes spent just laughing and playing with them.
