Modern-day visitors to Baltimore s Inner Harbor would hardly recognize the waterfront of Peter E. Dans latest children s book. A bustling port that housed the busiest intersection in the U.S., the Baltimore harbor of 1937 to 1955 was teeming with longshoremen, horse-drawn wagons, cars, and pedestrians all of them directed almost like a ballet by Sergeant Bill McKeldin and his trusty horse Bob. Sergeant Bill and His Horse Bob is a playful profile of this real-life Baltimore figure, the brother of Theodore McKeldin, a Baltimore mayor and later Governor of Maryland. His canny direction and unforgettable personality ensured many a commuter a safe and enjoyable trip.
Sergeant Bill and His Horse Bob is another gem celebrating Baltimore from the author who penned Perry s Baltimore Adventure: A Bird s-Eye View of Charm City, a perennial favorite of readers from two to ninety-two. Featuring lively illustrations by Mary Grace Corpus, the book gives young readers a glimpse of an earlier time and the local character who helped define it. Dans takes us to a time before stoplights and signals, when Sergeant Bill perched in a traffic booth at the intersection of Light and Pratt Streets, his horse Bob standing nearby with his nose in the direction of traffic flow. We learn how Sergeant Bill got his nickname, the Whistler of Pratt and Light Street, from whistling through his teeth at motorists and pedestrians. When Sergeant Bill gets a visit from President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the everyday chaos of Baltimore traffic grows greater as the President s dog Fala spies a cat and leaps out of his car! Bill and Bob must team up to rescue Fala from the busy Baltimore waterfront before the little dog sets sail as an unexpected passenger on the South-America-bound ship, the Santa Rosa.
Sergeant Bill and His Horse Bob is a fun reimagining of a beloved public figure s service to his city. Dans succeeds once again in honoring a local legend of days past, making collective memory accessible to younger generations.

From the Inside Flap
In the days before traffic signals and interstate highways, drivers traveling between New York and Florida passed through the intersection of Pratt and Light Streets in Baltimore, making it the busiest in the nation. It was up to the Baltimore Mounted Police and their faithful steeds to keep cars, trucks and people moving. No one did it better than Sergeant Bill McKeldin with his high-pitched whistle and the positioning of his horse Bob in the direction the traffic should flow. Called "The Whistler of Pratt and Light Street," he became a legend. This is his story.

Bygone Baltimore's Hero on a Horse
By Caroline Wayner
As a member of the McKeldin family, I was thrilled and honored to read this book. Sergeant Bill was my great uncle who died before I was born. However, I have heard and read about the legend of this traffic cop for my entire life. How wonderful to have it captured in this delightful book with its engaging prose and lovely illustrations!
Sergeant Bill depicts bygone, industrial Baltimore -- before the glamorous Inner Harbor transformation and the construction of the Eisenhower Interstate System. The bold illustrations bring old Baltimore to life with a lighthearted spirit. This book is a terrific tool for teaching young children about the past because it’s just so much fun to read, including a touch of historical fiction. The fact that it honors an everyday hero makes it all the better!

two of which are of age to enjoy being read to
By Amazon Customer
As a Baltimore Police Historian, I found this book interesting, and as a grandfather to four, two of which are of age to enjoy being read to, and particularly love police stories more over police stories from the department where their grandfather and great uncles all worked. The only change I make for my grandkids, is to add their names where I can, sure it means altering the story a bit, but hey they love it, and that's what pop-pops do. I enjoyed the book so much that I purchased an extra half dozen, to give to my police friends that worked the Baltimore Police Mounted unit. An interesting thing about the illustrations, which happen to be beautiful by the way, if you visit our Baltimore Police History page, you can find Pics of Sergeant Bill and his Horse Bill, as well as read actual stories about the rest of our mounted unit under the Mounted link in the Unit drop-down at the at the top of the page. Great book for the kids or police collector
