Maybelle the cockroach loves tasty crumbs and scrumptious sprinkles, but she is tired of braving the dangers of Mr. and Mrs. Peabody's kitchen: the flattening feet, the bright light, and especially the cat, Ramona.
Enter Bernice. She's an ant with a head cold who can't find her way back to her nest, and she adopts Maybelle as her new queen. But Bernice has a habit of getting into trouble, causing the Peabodys to think their house is haunted. Can't a cockroach ever get a break?

Maybelle and the Haunted Cupcake
1Make a WishAt last it was evening at Number 10 Grand Street. In the afternoon, Myrtle Peabody had baked Mystery Ingredient Miniature Cupcakes for the Ladies' Annual Bake Sale. She had decorated them JUST SO with pink icing and chopped nuts and chocolate sprinkles. Now she arranged them on a platter for her husband, Herbert, to admire.Watching from her cozy little home under the refrigerator, Maybelle the Cockroach waved her antennae. "Yum! I know what I want for dinner. I'm going to have a taste of those cupcakes," she said to her friend Henry the Flea."Just remember The Rules, Maybelle."Maybelle recited them by heart: "When it's light, stay out of sight; if you're spied, better hide; never meet with human feet. Don't worry. I'll wait until it's safe,Henry. But why does getting something to eat have to be so hard?""It isn't," Henry said. "It's easy. I live on Ramona, and when I get hungry, I bite her." Ramona was the Peabodys' cat. She was napping close by on the kitchen floor."That's fine for you," Maybelle said. "But I'm tired of going out for food and worrying about The Rules and being chased by Ramona. I wish I could eat at home. I wish someone would bring food to me right here.""Be careful what you wish for, Maybelle. Sometimes wishes come true," Henry said.Maybelle would soon find out what he meant.Text copyright © 2012 by Katie Speck

Entertaining Romp
By Catherine Nichols
The eponymous Maybelle is a cockroach. Yes, cockroach. She lives under a refrigerator in an apartment owned by Mr. and Mrs. Peabody. The couple's cat, Ramona, is home and meal source to Maybelle's best friend, Henry the Flea. Mrs. Peabody has just baked a batch of cupcakes for a bake sale and Maybelle can't wait to get her six legs on them. Henry reminds her of The Rules:
"When it's light, stay out of sight; if you're spied, better hide; never meet with human feet."
Maybelle intends to wait till night when fate intervenes in the shape of Bernice, a picnic ant with a bad head cold. Unable to find her way back to her nest, Bernice crowns Maybelle her new queen and does her best to fetch food for her sovereign. Heedless of The Rules, Bernice puts herself in danger time and time again and it is up to Maybelle to rescue her. In gratitude, Bernice hijacks an entire cupcake, albeit a mini one, carrying it on back. The silliness continues after the Peabodys discover what appears to be a haunted cupcake walking on its own across their kitchen floor.
An entertaining read, this book is sure to resonate with kids just starting to read short chapter books. The story bounces along at a lively place, the humor is abundant, and the clever black and white illustrations add to the charm. The Haunted Cupcake is number three in a series. I certainly intend to pick up the first two, Maybelle in the Soup and Maybelle Goes to Tea.

Maybelle and the Haunted Cupcake
By Lane
Maybelle, the most adorable of cockroaches (is there any other?) captivates young audiences once again. Bernice, a saucy little ant with no sense of smell due to a cold, bestows upon Maybelle the title of Queen, and chaos ensues. In the Peabody household where everything is expected to be "JUST SO", Mrs. Peabody has planned to wow her friends with her secret recipe for cupcakes. And, does Maybelle ever wish to have a taste! If only Maybelle and Bernice would listen to Henry the flea's reminder of "Be careful what you wish for!" Enduring repeated narrow escapes, Maybelle finds that being Queen is far more difficult than she had imagined, and we are left with the Peabodys wondering just how secret that cupcake recipe might be, because the cupcakes certainly have become haunted! Young readers will be unable to read or hear this story without plenty of laughter, and they will decide they know what they wish for---more of Maybelle and her friends. Katie Speck once again charms readers with her choice of words, adorable antics of her characters, and another wonderful read.

funny
By Melissa Sack
Maybelle is a cockroach that lives in the home of Myrtle and Herbert Peabody who like "everything to be JUST SO. No dust, no mess, and absolutely, positively NO BUGS." When Maybelle and her bug friends are caught trying to steal a cupcake the Peabody's are convinced that their house is haunted!
This is the third in the series. We will be looking for the others. My kids thought this book was really funny!
